  1. I get the feeling that this attitude change equates to throwing money at the top free agents. That philosophy may bring us a playoff appearance, but it'll also cripple the franchise when our big winner eventually declines or gets hurt. 1. How many other teams have turned their franchise around like the Rays? 2. What Ray's fans? They're some of the most apathetic fans in the league and you want us to be more like them? 3. You're the only person saying some of this stuff, so if it makes you sick, stop it. Help yourself, dude.
  2. I'd love to see Cameron back and am glad to see he wants to come back. It's easy to say stuff like this when the team is doing well, but I think it speaks volumes about our franchise when a solid veteran like Cameron likes it and wants to come back despite our struggles this year.
  3. Maybe you should read some of the posts before trashing the thread. That is really not even close to the point. One year removed from the playoffs = wallowing in mediocrity? Come on. So you want a guy that ignores the limitations of a small market team and takes it from the cellar to the playoffs? I know a guy like that. I think free agents would love to live in Florida all year round. And why was the Rays World Series appearance so remarkable? Because it was highly improbable. Demanding that we emulate one of the biggest turnarounds by a baseball franchise in recent history is the definition of unrealistic expectations.
  4. If your point is that we should expect the same from Melvin as his tenure in Texas, we're in for a real treat. They won the division 3 times under Melvin's watch. You must not have followed the Rangers very closely.
  5. Shortly after the time of the Overbay trade McGowan was considered the top prospect in the Blue Jays system. We were not getting him for Lyle Overbay. Fielder might have netted him, though. Also, your desire for Marcum is almost certainly benefited by the luxury of hindsight. Marcum was not part of the top ten prospect ranking at the time of the Overbay trade. In the previous year Jackson, not Marcum was part of the list.
  6. If I'm not mistaken, I think one of the major points of the thread is how unrealistic it is to expect the Brewers to be a playoff team every year. Yes, Wren picking up Vazquez was a nice move but are you seriously suggesting that Frank Wren is a better GM than Doug Melvin? Check out some of the insanely bad contracts he handed out in his short tenure with the Orioles. I'll admit that Angelos probably had some part in those deals, but the Albert Belle deal makes Jeffrey Hammonds contract look good.
  7. You hit the nail on the head, BCU. The criticisms of Doug Melvin are always along the lines of he should have traded for X before they broke out and should have traded Y before they regressed. The thing is, of the many people with sentiment few if any were actually calling for these moves when they should have happened. Another favorite of mine is that he shouldn't have spent money on Suppan, Riske, Cameron, and Hall so we could make a splash in free agency. Essentially, the argument is that we shouldn't have added these bad contracts in the past (or a good one in the case of Cameron), so we could add one in the present (signing Derek Lowe or acquiring Scott Kazmir for example). The reality is that we cannot expect to build a team through big trades and free agent acquisitions. We need to rely on the draft and trades for mid-tier prospects. Melvin has already made some moves of this type acquring guys like Chris Cody and Josh Butler. I'm certain will see similar moves this offseason involving someone like McGehee, Hart, or Hardy.
  8. I know there were some people (myself included) who wanted Melvin to try to get Vazquez this offseason, but suggestions that Melvin should target Jackson and Jurrjens before they were good were few and far between. Did you honestly expect Jackson to have the season he did (Dave Dombrowski might be the only guy who did, but he also thought that Dontrelle Willis would be a solid starter as well), and do you honestly expect Melvin to be able to predict which players will break out and make moves accordingly? Expectations for Doug Melvin outrageously high. When the masses get their way with Melvin's firing they'll be dissappointed, just as they have been with Yost's replacement.
  9. I can't see Boston giving up that much for Fielder and Hardy. I don't think they'd part with Lester alone for Fielder. There are definitely are good match for us, though. Fielder taking over for a quickly declining Ortiz makes too much sense. If we don't bring Cameron back, Fielder for Ellsbury and Bucholz would be a realistic starting point, IMO.
  10. So one start in AAA is enough to make you doubt that Suppan will continue to be an adequate back of the rotation starter? (Yes, I know Suppan's numbers look horrible, but I think its fair to assume he was hurting his last couple of starts). I don't think anyone does, including Melvin. If Doug is content with the current pitching staff he deserves to be fired, but I don't think there's any doubt he's going to try and get pitching this off season.
  11. I'm no Macha fan, but if they players actually need to be motivated to win, the problem is the players. So a rough outing in AAA means Suppan's career is pretty much over. Come on. You predict 10 years of trying to finish .500, I predict a collection of repetitive pessimistic posts.
  12. You don't make the playoffs with bad pitching, and when you make the playoffs, anything can happen. I'm not sure how you could begin to formulate an argument that Melvin had a "bad track record" in Texas. I'm sure they would have much rather spent their early October's at home with their families. Winning the division 3 out of 8 years: what a disappointment.
  13. You're talking about the Texas Rangers that had their only 3 postseason appearances under Melvin's watch, right? If anything, Melvin has a track record of bringing playoff baseball to long-suffering clubs.
  14. I wonder what Counsell's career would look like if he hadn't used that funky batting stance for so long.
  15. A platoon outfielder for the closest thing we have to a pitching prospect in the upper minors. That was a great trade. Jack Z. gets a lot of credit for the Brewers success here, but it's interesting that the highest rated starters on the Power 50 in the upper minors, Butler and Cody, were guys that Melvin brought in.
  16. But how many of them were actually expected to get better? Parra and? At 34 Looper should have been expected to regress. Bush and Suppan both faced injuries, and Gallardo was coming off a year where he only threw 24 innings. Another way to look at it is that considering the high turnover rate of coaches, keeping a coaching job for 17 years means he must be good.
  17. I think that under the best case scenario (everyone staying healthy) we were expected to be average. That didn't happen.
  18. These moves have much more to do with appeasing the fans than they do with winning and accountability. If Attanasio is on an accountability kick, he should clean house in the minor league medical staff. Don't fire a pitching coach who failed to make bad pitchers good or waste a year of our top prospect's service time. If he wants to win, let Melvin do his job or find another qualified individual to do it (not someone whose only experience in baseball is buying a team).
  19. Its interesting how this move could end up trading a year of Escobar for another year of Hardy. I don't have a huge problem with it right now, but if Escobar isn't starting the far majority of games up here, Ken Macha better be doing Red Sox games next year.
  20. Can you say scapegoat? Wow. A completely unnecessary move that I imagine was ordered or strongly suggested by Attanasio. Its disappointing that after almost two decades in the organization, Castro is fired for a couple months of bad pitching from a pitching staff that was expected to be average at best.
  21. Unfortunately, it'll only allow one to burn an ISO to a CD or DVD. It would be nice if it could create an ISO and mount it. Also, Vista currently allows you to share a DVD drive over the network, so I'm sure Windows 7 will. I've never tried installing software, but I can transfer files from my Vista PC DVD drive to my XP Notebook (it's painfully slow over my network, though).
  22. Yeah, I have had zero issues with Vista since SP1 came out. Vista in its current state is great if you have a capable computer, but the plethora of bugs at its release really turned a lot of people off. Hopefully they don't make the same mistake with this release. As for Windows 7, I haven't had a chance to try it but am looking forward to QAM support in Media Center (unfortunately no native Blu Ray support, though). Obviously the performance improvements and better use of multiple processors will be nice as well. One minor app that I'm looking forward to is Windows Disk Image Burner. It'll be nice not to need a third party program just to burn an ISO.
  23. I find it hard to imagine that Melvin wouldn't trade McGehee for pitching if the opportunity arose. Considering our lack of pitching, our infield depth, and that McGehee's value is at its height so far in his career, he seems like a perfect candidate to be dealt.
  24. It just doesn't work that way. A package of marginal prospects is not going to net us a difference maker. Teams want top prospects for good pitching and thankfully Doug wasn't willing to pay that price.
  25. He's a better option than some of our AAA guys and we got him for a guy who would likely be nothing more than a September bench player. Nothing to get excited about, but nothing to complain about either.
