  1. You almost have to leave Arcia alone now, we need the defense.
  2. I mean I guess this is one way to solve the bat problem at 2nd, but Shaw better be at least passable at 2nd for this to work. Can't believe they would just plow forward with that plan midseason.
  3. I have learned to try not to question Stearns but this is pretty baffling to me. This for a rental at a position we didn't need? If we wanted Moustakas that bad, why didn't we go get him in the offseason when no one wanted to touch him and he wouldn't have cost a thing in prospects?
  4. Feels like as good of time as any to say it, but get an actual bullpen area, Giants. It's not 1948 anymore.
  5. Chase Anderson very quietly now down to a 3.69 ERA. Davies' rehab start went well tonight. I wonder how much his likely nearing return will factor into their decisions to get or not get another starter?
  6. If Longoria doesn't show up to the park tomorrow, Mad Bum will be the first one questioned. I didn't really realize until last night how somewhat sneaky good of a career that Longoria has had. Like, possibly HOF good.
  7. Hahaha loved watching Bumgarner spaz out about it. Please hang the L on him.
  8. Ok, at least a productive out. Braun needs to drive in 1 here some way...
  9. Broxton has had a nice night especially given the opposing pitcher.
  10. It’s just too bad that there’s not really a market for any catching because this team could use it badly. The best catcher in baseball is available. Just a matter of how much they're willing for it to hurt.
  11. I am glad to hear he is going to be flexible on this now.
  12. Relievers are so volatile from year to year and I think Knebel is going to be at the extreme end of that spectrum. He's a guy I can see being completely dominant when he's right and struggle a lot when he can't throw his curve for strikes and hitters can sit dead red on his fastball. I don't know what the best role is for him right now but I do think there's better options for the team than to just have him close every game.
  13. I honestly think so (ok, maybe 3 are necessary). A guy like Dozier at 2B, an upgrade at catcher, and a solid-but-unspectacular starter might get us there. Realmuto/Dozier/Stroman or Gibson might do it. Obviously, you'll have to give to get, which is the heart of the debate. I don't think there's a Sabathia-type out there, but I'm not sure that's the level of addition they even need. I'm really sold on Realmuto and would be willing to part with Hiura+ to get him. I realize that most are probably not in that boat and I get it. I'm just a little surprised he isn't being pursued a little more strongly. He's the best at a position that almost everyone is weak at, he is strong both offensively and defensively, he is controlled and obtainable. He's a potential game changer for a contender.
  14. This post is just chock full of generalizations and half-truths. 99 Mat Gamels for every 1 Ryan Braun? Ok, not every prospect has to become Ryan Braun to be helpful. Secondly, we already have added a veteran with a long track record of success, and unlike Hamels, he also doesn't suck lately. Also funny that you point out Verlander but not Darvish or Gray. Verlander is the exception, not the rule, and in no way is Cole Hamels comparable to him.
  15. One of Barnes or Williams is headed to AAA today I would have to think. There's just no way around it unless there's a surprise DL move. The other move may be trickier. It seems unclear whether or not Miller can be optioned. If so, that makes sense. Perez being DFAed wouldn't break my heart, but we all know that ain't happening. Despite the Saladino rumors yesterday and his rough night defensively, I don't think he's going anywhere. I have a hard time seeing Broxton go down too. Without him they have no true 4th OFer, and Cain may be nicked up.
  16. There are other ways to add a 5 ERA type pitcher to your staff this time of year without spending 5 million dollars. We don't need a "veteran". We need a good starter.
  17. I have no problem having someone as a primary option to use in that role. That doesn't mean nobody else can close. But in a 3-2 game, I want my best pitcher out there in the 9th as often as possible, and that's Hader. I also don't think Hader's splits should matter, he's still better vs RH hitters than Knebel. Finally, I don't think it needs to be the last 3 outs. Hader could handle the last 4,5, even 6 outs. Burnes, Soria, and Albers can now eat the innings Hader has been used for up until now. What if you've got 1 out and bases loaded in the 7th in a 4-3 game? Isn't that potentially a higher leverage and more important game situation than "saving" Hader to enter with nobody out in a 4-3 game in the 8th or 9th?
  18. Pretty much everyone but you said Hamels was garbage well before the Cubs were even in on him. You even acknowledged that others disagreed. Then he was traded to the Cubs which changed no ones feelings that he is still garbage. Has nothing to do with rationalizing the Cubs' moves.
  19. I think there's an obvious solution here, make Hader the primary closer. He has been the most dominant reliever all year. Also, I fear they're not going to use Soria correctly. He will be just one more arm to add in a game, shortening the outings of others. In other words, if they have a game they would have used Burnes, Jeffress, Knebel they'll throw Soria out there too just because they have him. No matter how good any of these guys are, the more relievers you use in a close game, the more likely one of them blows up. For example, Burnes had things under control last night, pulled after 2/3 inning. I get it was 2-2 at the time, lefty coming up, but it was only the 6th inning. Let these guys roll if they're pitching well! Try to get through every game with one less pitcher and you'll keep everyone fresher that way too. Or, just not have a closer. Play matchups and situations. If Hader closed a game yesterday but Soria hasn't pitched in 3 days and a string of righties is due up in the 9th, I see no good reason that he shouldn't close. All of Hader, Jeffress, Knebel, and Soria can be used as "closers". Why does one particular player need to be designated to retire the last 3 batters of any game?
  20. In addition to what others said about potentially not exercising the option which would free up a slot, even keeping him in a way frees up a slot indirectly. As in it would be used on a player who would contribute to the major league club (I mean it's possible Kodi would've too, but also very possible he wouldn't). Spending a 40-man spot on someone who will be in the minors all year means you need another player in that position for the 25-man roster. Soria makes another reliever expendable, and in a way saves a spot that way. Correct. It's quite a long shot that Kodi would be a possible contributor on a contending major league team next year, which makes him a tough guy to stash on the 40 man roster especially how Stearns views and uses the 40 man. I see no reason Medeiros couldn't have been used as a rotational pen arm next year like Lopez or Houser this year. He's more MLB ready than Marcos Diplan who they protected last year.
