Broxton hasn't been as horrible as people think. No he's not hitting, but he's getting on base okay (.327 OBP). BRef actually has him at a 1.3 WAR in 40 PAs, which is mathematically amazing with his mediocre hitting line but is a testament to how good he's been defensively. I know Cain is a great CFer but it's hard not to wonder if Broxton makes that catch yesterday in the 9th if they are in opposite positions.

He's been brutal against LHP this year (.518 OPS). So I get it, hard to see him having much success against Kershaw. I'd still take him over Broxton. Guessing going against Kershaw they are placing a premium on having Keon's defense in there knowing they have no margin for error on runs allowed. Of course having Aguilar at 3rd kind of defeats that purpose so who knows.

Part of the problem with being an unknown quantity is, unless you're a top prospect or the team simply has no other options, small sample size doesn't really apply to you when the team decides to give you a shot. You produce off the bat, or you go back down. You make it impossible for the team to send you back down (Hader last year), or you'll likely end up back down. Nottingham unfortunately didn't do enough to force the team to keep him up. Same reason why Orf's days are probably highly numbered on the 40.

Which is why Realmuto won't be coming here. Hiura isn't moving unless its for controllable pitching. I wouldn't assume anything about what Stearns would or wouldn't do. Stearns is extremely value-oriented and I don't see him pigeonholing his assets to fill one particular weakness like that. There were many who made that assumption about Brinson at this time last year. It would have certainly been met with a great deal of skepticism if I would have said last July that we would be trading Brinson and other top assets for an outfielder in 6 months.

Not a chance, Ray has had a nice season but he isn't close to Hiura in surplus value. This is why I had proposed Realmuto+Castro for Hiura+Ray+Ortiz+Gatewood+Bickford, to lessen the sting of losing Hiura.

Great article, agree completely. Noonan articles are usually very good. Also, not really pen related but I've been on the fence about getting Arcia back up -- Noonan sold me on it. I'd get him back up and generally go with Saladino at 2nd. Not only is that rock solid defensively but not that bad offensively if Arcia continues to build on his recent success in AAA.

That's pretty close. With the season Realmuto is having, I'd project him at right around 4.3 WAR per season through 2020. That would put his value at 103.735 million. He's going to get big, big arbiration raises so I'd guess he'll end up making about 21 million from now through the end of 2020. I'd put his surplus value in the 80-82 million range. If I'm the Marlins, I wouldn't consider selling him for anything less than 70 million. I have the following surplus values on the player's mentioned: -Hiura = 43.73 million (#26-#70 hitter) -Woodruff = 14.66 million (between #75-#100 pitcher and top 10 organizational prospect) -Ortiz = 11.45 million (top 10 organizational prospect) -Henry = 4.01 million (between role player prospect and fringe prospect) Total value = 73.85 million No way the Brewer's get to Realmuto's value without including Hiura. If he's not in the deal, the deal doesn't work. I totally agree. I don't even know why other headliners are being thrown out there. Peralta and Burnes are going to be non-starters for Realmuto and the Marlins have made that pretty clear with Washington on who they've asked for.

I would hope Brewer fans would be able to identify the upside and ceiling of the players they were acquiring, rather than the small sample of a few months of one season. At the end of the day, fans don't make moves, GMs do. I for one would be very excited to pick up a couple prospects of Phillips's and Ortiz's pedigree. I disagree that the offers weren't close, too. The only real prospect was Diaz, and scouting reports are not particularly high on him. I think Phillips has an equal if not high ceiling. Then you are comparing Ortiz to the poo poo platter of fringe prospects the Dodgers sent. I guess if a couple of guys make it, they did OK, but if Ortiz ascends to the mid to upper rotation starter that most scouting reports peg him as, that's much more valuable. The top 3 prospects the Dodgers gave up would have been #2 (Diaz will likely be a top 50), #15, and #20 in the Dodgers' system in the midseason update. Kremer, Bannon, and Pop rank #13, #17, and #29 in the Orioles system now (Diaz is #2). It's contradictory to continuously talk up our #10-#20 prospects and yet say that Diaz is the only "real" prospect the Dodgers gave up and call the rest "poo poo platter". I think what we offered is fair, but I doubt the Orioles highly considered it over what the Dodgers offered. I disagree that Phillips has the ceiling of Diaz, and I'm sure the Orioles don't see it that way either. Ortiz is a better second prospect than Kremer, but the fact that he's had trouble staying healthy and has basically treaded water in his 2 years since we traded for him isn't a great sign especially for a medically paranoid team like the O's. Basically, I can believe our offer was second but probably a fairly distant second.

Kershaw has been sort of human this year. Of course in Kershaw's case that means K/9 under 10, ERA in the high 2's instead of low 2's, and WHIP just a bit over 1.

I would highly recommend not looking at the pitching lines for anything under AA tonight.

Why do drivers seem to assume that left turn red arrow lights are optional? Typically when one is going straight and the light turns red, a driver stops. Yet when I'm in the lane facing opposite bound traffic and they have a green arrow, there have been days at a certain intersection where I've had to sit and wait for a good 10 seconds after my light turns green as cars continue to turn left in front of me. Dangerous, illegal, and annoying. Your time is NOT any more valuable than mine.

Yeah Not gonna happen, though (I hope) Yeah won't happen-- but...if they don't put it together soon... Losing the next 2 to the Dodgers, then losing 2 out of 3 to Washington, 3 out of 4 in San Francisco, then 2 in L.A., would put them at 4 over .500 on deadline day. And none of that is a really big stretch.
