  2. Just wondering if we should be using this guy in more of a ROOGY type role to maximize him right now. Looking at his numbers I'm surprised how much he's been used against lefties -- 43 PAs vs lefties, 57 vs righties. His splits are extreme -- lefties hit him very well to the tune of .289/.357/.553/.910. Williams is almost completely untouchable against righties. .087/.250/.152/.402. He strikes out almost half of righties he faces, but only about 20-25% of lefties.
  3. Well...depends on the return. Not knowing, probably wouldn't like it much. Choi just doesn't make sense as a platoon partner Thames. At least it would free up Braun to basically platoon with Thames but he needs to hit a little more for his bat to play up at 1st. I would need to be able to say, "Wow, that's more than I thought we'd get for Aguilar" to be happy about it, and I just don't see that.
  4. That's really how it works? You can add a guy for 1 day to circumvent an opt out? Anyway, Choi is totally within his rights to ask for a trade and provided he's still doing his job it's not pretentious or wrong at all. He's buried on the 1B depth chart and wants to try to get his career going. Certainly understandable. Doesn't mean the Brewers have to comply but he can sure ask. If they don't get an offer they like they won't deal him and he can look for a better opportunity elsewhere next season.
  5. I think we need to remember that the end goal of player acquisition and building the minor league system is to win a World Series. Literally nothing else is as important than that. I'd take a Series win over 5 straight division championships with NLCS bow outs any day of the week. Edit: I'm agreeing with you 3and2Fastball, if that was unclear. This is a business run by rich people that are rich for a reason. We can yell this at a cloud all we want, and by all accounts, by greedy rich person standards, Mark and Co. have gone somewhat further than some franchises have in terms of spending close to a deficit some years...but outside of maybe a few Mike Ilitch years where he probably pushed it, I don't see many owners running a deficit because a few fans on a message board are imploring them to do so. I also find it funny that half of this board is chalking up a World Series victory if we make some "win now" moves like Machado. It probably increases our odds from 5% to 8% for one season. If we're maybe more certain of a playoff spot later in the year, maybe it takes it from 9% to 12%. Yeah, I would be very excited to get Machado, but you're right. This is still a business and telling Mark A. he should just run in the red for 3 seasons and then he can jack up prices later to get it back after we win the World Series is just really unrealistic. What if that World Series never comes? What if we sign Machado for $40M a year and he gets injured next year and never comes back the same? We're then probably rebuilding and completely underwater on the Machado deal. If it was your money, surely you would take all these things into consideration. Mark A. would not ever have been in a position to own an MLB franchise if he ran it like some people want him to.
  6. That's pretty pretentious of him if true. No one made him sign a minor league deal in the offseason. That's the only option he had, though, because frankly he's been a bad major league player. Like Brew said its just business. He actually had a May 15th opt out if he wasn't up the MLB team by then so he could have bailed by now if he wanted to. He's 27 and running out of time to establish himself at this level. He sees the writing on the wall here at 1B and wants to give himself the best chance to make it. Nothing wrong with that.
  7. Because Davis is a defensive albatross and making over $10M despite being barely over a 2 WAR player, and Nottinghamm and Derby are both pretty good bets to at least contribute something at the big league level at some point. They could give us back Davis for free and I don't know that I'd take him. I wouldn't want to pay him over $10M and I have no idea where you could fit him into the OF.
  8. Sung Min Kim (@sung_minkim) Tweeted: Reports say 1B Ji-Man Choi has been called up to the Brewers again. His side had asked for a trade to a team that would play him more in the big leagues. #Brewers https://t.co/rAp7xP1KQ1 https://twitter.com/sung_minkim/status/1002052571320598528?s=17
  9. As a general rule I just don't get extending a guy that far out for his mid 30 seasons when you have that much control still left. For the small savings you might get, there is so much risk involved. I didn't like it at all when they gave it to Braun and I wouldn't like it now. So much can happen in 5 years. I doubt any of us back in 2011 had any inkling that the next 5-7 years of Braun would involve a PED scandal, a 65 game suspension, and chronic injury problems. To me, that's just too much risk for a small market. For long-term contracts that far out, I'd stick to young players, trying to buy out potentially expensive arbitration seasons and a free agency year or two. Such as Braun's first contract, or Lucroy's deal. Josh Hader would be an excellent candidate for such a contract now.
  10. 2 out of 3 in Chicago, split in Cleveland, 4-5 in the Phillies/Cubs stretch, 2 out of 3 in Pittsburgh, split against the Cardinals, 3-2 against the Royal/Reds gives us... 14-12
  11. There were a number of mistakes made this game: the Counsell no challenge, the baserunning outs, the big Shaw error, but in a way, that's almost an encouraging sign -- this team has grown. Last year those mistakes would have cost them the game. Not this time.
  12. Just to throw out some guesses from what we've seen so far, considering graduations: - Hiura will move up somewhere low top 30 - Ray will move back into the top 100, probably somewhere in the 60s or 70s. - Burnes and Peralta will both be low top 100s. That's all. But that would be a pretty solid system with a top 30 and four top 100s, considering the depth.
  13. Should be? Yes. But we all know in the real world that if Knebel had come in and served up a tater today, this poll looks much different.
  14. Kind of skewed when you ask in hindsight to be honest. Anyone who didn't really know at the time is now going to say "Oh yeah Knebel was right" now that it worked out, as they probably would have if we had stuck with Hader and it had worked out.
  15. 7 years $210-$230 million, front loaded with $120 million over the first 3 years, opt out after 4 years. It can be done. There is a difference between that offer being made now and being made in free agency. Honestly asking, can you give one comparable example in MLB where a player took a megadeal this close to free agency as a condition of a trade?
  16. So glad we took this one. Yesterday was an easy loss to shrug off as "can't win them all." Today's would have been more of a punch a hole in your wall kind of loss.
  17. Hader is far and away your best guy. You live or die with him here. Just don't get this, even if it works out.
  18. Strike zone was the biggest I've seen all year now shrink to the size of a grapefruit.
  19. Glad they were able to pick up Jeffress, I know pitcher wins and losses don't really mean crap, but he's pitched too well this year to lose a game on an error.
  20. Roll with Hader for the next 2, hopefully get 2 scoreless and hopefully score in the next 9 outs.
