  1. 5 games is statistical noise. The standard deviation (I think that's the proper term) is 3 games. The deviation is usually attributed to luck, which can quickly turn next year to a negative number.
  2. It will also help the ground ball machine to have a defense that can field a ground ball.
  3. I liked him because he had a good walk-in song. Sad to see him go, but we can find someone else to pitch those 30 innings. At that age he's a hand grenade waiting to blow up. We got away with it not blowing up in our faces (any more than him getting hurt made us use Loe too much). I'd rather let a guy go a year too soon than a year too late.
  4. The Bonilla deal was fine if the Mets could have kept making 9% interest with that money. Or if they hadn't invested the money in a Ponsi scheme. They took a risk that interest rates wouldn't crash. I can't imagine interest rates going lower than what they are today. To be fair, most of the time Loe was used early in the season was when we didn't have KRod, Saito, or Hawkins available. I'm not sure the other options were better. Once we had better options Loe started staying in the pen.
  5. I had no hatred for McGehee, but hated his 2011 play. I knew it wasn't because he wasn't trying. Some interesting (to me at least) tidbits: McGehee had a .283/.333/.565 line against the Bucs in 2011. He OPS less than .682 every other season against them. This is the second time McGehee has been moved off one NL Central team to another because the first team had ARam. McGehee and ARam have each been on the same 3 teams in their ML careers.
  6. Our Pythagorean expectation from last year is 91 wins so we were 5 wins over. Luck could turn bad this year and we end up 5 wins under. That puts us at 86. It isn't a stretch to say that losing Fielder and Braun bumps us to around .500 with bad luck. Aramis of 2010 would negate the improvement of AGonz. I like this signing for 2012, but I'm getting worried about the age of this team, lack of prospects coming, and lack of giving current prospects opportunities to succeed.
  7. Braun has much more at risk than MLB. Part of the reason Braun signed an undervalued contract is he knew he could make up tons of money using his name. Even a public false positive costs him millions in rights fees. MLB did fine with McGuire, Sosa, etc so they don't stand to lose much if this is true. Braun's camp is doing full on damage control now that this got out. This is what you do when some other party leaks damaging information. Whomever leaked it should be fired. Braun shouldn't keep someone who would do such a dumb thing. MLB shouldn't keep someone that can't keep contractual secrecy.
  8. Yes they are. I don't know why I typed Justin. I was looking at BJ's stat page. I feel like the Genie in Aladdin when he felt sheepish. Stupid error on my part. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  9. Also, how many other teams have the reigning MVP for 10+ more years?
  10. 2012 important dates February.
  11. JaDerHeyski mentioned this at breakfast this morning. First, Pujols was a Cardinal. Now he's an Angel. How long before he's a Padre?
  12. Fielder, McGehee, Betancourt 2011 combined: 1876 PA, .259/.327/.433/.759 with really bad defense Justin Upton 2011: 640 PA, .243/.331/.429/.759 with good (I think) defense So upgrading 3B and SS can offset what we'll lose at 1B. SS is the same offense but now plus defense. If we can upgrade 3B and get someone that can throw from first to home, the team might not miss the loss of Fielder.
  13. There was some excitement here about Suppan being a Christmas gift showing that we can go out and get premium free agents.
  14. Mark Kotsay made a nice back-up player for late inning pitch hitting when the pitcher had to throw strikes. He started in CF during the post season. Do not give the manager a dangerous toy to play with. He's liable to cause someone to poke their own eye out.
  15. That payout wouldn't work. The agent would negotiate a larger per year payout or more years based on interest rates. That is how Bobby Bonilla will get paid close to $30M in deferred money over 25 years as apposed to the $6M he was supposed to be paid in 2000. Using my rough math, you would probably need to pay Prince almost $9M per year from 2015-2023 or pay him $5M per year from 2015 to 2031. That's a lot of money to be paying someone on another team right when Braun is making a good chunk of change. It could work out for the team. It would have worked for the Mets if they had been making 8.2% interest on their money. They had an investment guy guarantee double digit returns. If the economy hadn't caused interest rates to crash and the investment guy wasn't running the biggest Ponsi scheme outside the government they would have actually made money in the deal. But it is a huge risk for the Brewers. What if they have a string of bad luck and are not competitive for a bit? What if 2020 attendance numbers look like 2004 attendance numbers?
  16. Yuni isn't gone yet. He said he's willing to play 2B. We still need a utility IF. I won't dance until Yuni has signed with a different team.
  17. If my choices are Yuni, a five year old, and my grandmother, I hope we take the five year old or my grandmother. I wouldn't sign and trade KRod. I'd give permissions to other teams to talk to Boras. Once they have a handshake deal, we can do a trade and (the other team) sign deal. That happens all the time and prevents the Brewers taking a risk on the other team backing out.
  18. Maybe he sees the DH in the AL as a good thing for his future. The Halos were also able to give him the No Trade Clause that Miami is rumored to have said was off the table.
  19. There is speculation that the Angels might just release Morales. I can't imagine a trade would take much.
  20. Is there any interest here in Morales? I don't follow the AL and know nothing of him.
  21. Nope. He can only be used in the 8th inning. Loe or Estrada will face the heart of the order in the 7th. Nope. He is a 1 inning pitcher. If Axford needs a day off, K-Rod will get the 9th. Loe or Estrada will face the heart of the order in the 8th. Jeez, it's like you're looking at numbers to calculate what's best for the team. You don't take into consideration the unwritten rules, hunches, animal entrails, and other hocus pocus that real managers use to make their decisions. Hopefully I laid it on thick enough for people to know this entire post is in a blue font so dark it only looks like normal black text.
  22. When you are in person you can tell defense a lot better. You can see where the guy started a play. You can see (direction and how quickly) his first reaction. There are plenty of times that players make bad reads off the bat and takes a step in the wrong direction. By the time the camera focuses on the player, he is already 4-5 steps slow to the ball. Sometimes the camera can catch that he made a bad read, sometimes fans assume the player is just slow, sometimes fans think it was just out of reach. Or sometimes he makes a great running catch that someone with a good jump would be waiting for. The same can be said about scouting their abilities on the base paths. I won't single anyone out, but we do have a player on the team that does this and his name rhymes with Hory Cart. We closed down the Japanese scouting to save money. We would not have been able to build the facility in the D.R. if we had been spending money on Japanese scouts for the past eight years. The Stache specifically said he was shutting down Asian scouting so we could use all of that money scouting south of the US. He figured that the Brewers weren't in a position to fight for these players since there was a posting fee on top of FA salary. He felt the money was better served to get players from one part of the world than partially scouting the whole world and getting fewer players. [ot]I am typing this while looking at the last two posters' avatars. They look so good next to each other.[/ot]
  23. Wasn't 2010 the year ARam separated his right shoulder in a game in Milwaukee? If so, that could very well explain his off year. That was '09. I was sitting behind the Cub dugout laughing at him. He and Cub fans did not appreciate my humor.I was giving him a standing ovation from RF.
  24. Correct. 1v4 plays 2v3. It will be interesting on what happens with the conference champs. Do they get listed by record and repeat the process? Do they have set Conferences play each other? Do they have the Conferences play each other that differs year to year. Another question mark is how will the ASG work?
  25. Interesting trivia, it would mark the 2nd time McGehee would be let go (or placed on waivers) because the team already had Ramirez.
