  1. To me, this is a very interesting situation from the Yankees' perspective. This is something that probably wouldn't have happened under Torre and seems to represent a new direction under Girardi--even if it is only spring training. The Yankees tend to represent a corporation, with lots of high-paid players and very little fire. If Girardi gets them to play like they are on a mission--not just trying to fulfill high expectations, the Yankees could wind up being better than expected. I'm not predicting it and I'm not convinced of Girardi's credentials as a manager, but I see it as a positive for the Yankees. As for the Brewers, I think Prince Fielder getting hit by a pitch and glaring down a pitcher will eventually trigger a fight this year--most likely when the Brewers retaliate for it, as I doubt they would directly challenge Fielder to a fight. If I recall correctly, Rickie Weeks appeared to be the first one to the top of the dugout after last year's near-altercation with the Pirates.

  3. Baseball's grown by $5 billion under his watch and he's gotten maybe $50 million total out of it for himself. That's only 1%. I may not always agree with Bud's decisions, but his #1 priority has always been the good of the game--or at least he does a good job making it look that way.
  4. A hockey game at Miller Park would be interesting...it seemed like the Frozen Tundra Classic went over well. Maybe they could get the Blackhawks and Wild to play each other in WI? The way the Buffalo game went over, the NHL would be crazy not to do at least one per year.
  5. Another day, another win, hopefully.
  6. The thing about that is, Rickie is a .249 career hitter and he hit 16 HR and stole 25 bases last year--despite being injured and spending time in AAA. So don't give up on him as a 30/30 guy yet, he's still a few years away from his prime.
  7. Ok, to get back on topic... Parra now has a spring ERA of 1.50. Fukudome is batting .316, so even if he looks bad at times, I'm worried that he is the real deal. It would be especially frustrating to see him take the Cubs over the top, since we never have and never will have a chance of signing a player of that caliber from Japan. It's too early to tell though, D. Lee is batting .150 after all.
  8. The sample size is just too small at this point. 23 ABs is less than a week of games. I'm not worried. All it takes is about 3 hits and he'll be back over .200.
  9. If Pujols goes down, this could become a reality. But the Pirates and Astros are also very weak. The Reds have Dusty Baker. I think the key aspect is that the Cardinals were 78-84 last year, and that includes the week of games they lost after Hancock died. So they weren't that far away (record wise) from contending last year. The Pirates were 10 games worse and haven't done anything major to improve. It could be close, but I still see the Cards beating up on Houston and Cincinnati more than the Pirates will. Plus, could we argue the Pirates have the curse of John Kruk?
  10. 2007 stats: Player A: 134 IP 5.09 ERA 54 BB 107 SO 23 HR allowed Player B: 150 IP 5.10 ERA 54 BB 132 SO 20 HR allowed They have the same ERA, but with 16 more innings, player B allowed 3 less HR, gave up the same number of walks as player A, and recorded 25 more strikeouts. The only difference is that Player A (Claudio Vargas) was 11-6 last year while Player B (Chris Capuano) was 5-12. If we take a 2 or 3 year sample size, Chris Capuano is the obvious choice over Vargas.
  11. You may feel bad, but it's not the end of the world.
  12. I know we've discussed this before, but I really like the idea of batting Kendall 9th. Although there are arguments the other way, I see a common situation arising where the #6 or #7 hitter gets on base with less than 2 outs. If Kendall is batting 8th, he will frequently end the inning by grounding into a double-play--and we all know how irritating double plays are. Even worse, the pitcher will be up first to start the next inning. If the pitcher bats 8th, he can bunt the runner(s) over, leaving first base open. Then, Kendall is up with runners in scoring position. Knowing Kendall's high OBP, he may draw a walk, leaving many big opportunities for Rickie Weeks, who most of us think will have a big year. If Kendall hits a weak ground ball, the inning is over, but instead of having the pitcher leading off the next inning, we will be back to the top of the order. Thus, it doesn't always make sense to have the worst hitter bat 9th. In the same way, we wouldn't want Prince Fielder batting 1st, even though he is our best hitter. I really hope Yost goes through with this.
  13. Better that he's addicted Caffeine than Nicotine. I'd rather have children watching TV and seeing Ned double-fisting coffee than spitting chew everywhere.
  14. The one thing about MVP voting is that if Fielder and Braun both have monster years, they could split the vote and someone else could get it. That being said, if they both have MVP-caliber years, I won't be complaining.
  15. Anyone else subconsciously hoping for Vargas to get crushed today so we don't have to worry about him competing for the rotation? Happy first day of baseball, everyone. I saw a few people in Brewers gear today which got me pumped!
  16. One can't help but be concerned about the vulnerability of the power grid. Without electricity, we'd be sent back to 1900 in less than a week. Not to mention brewerfan.net withdrawals.
  17. My guess is nails or staples
  18. I really think all he's saying is that if Prince Fielder is up with 2 on and 2 out, he'd rather have him swing when he's ahead in the count than load up the bases for whoever is behind him, even if the end result is a lower OBP. At least that's what I hope he is saying, for the sake of Reds fans.
  19. I think ten years ago the upper grandstand at CS was $8, bleachers were $5, General parking was $5 In ten more years: Behind the dugout: $250 Bleachers: $30 Terrace Reserved: $24 Uecker Seats: $5 General Parking: $15, but gas is $6.00/gallon Beer: $10 Hot Dog: $5 Season ticket prices: $5 more than now Picture in front of 2009 World Series banner: $10
  20. I went to Toronto for a day in the summer of 2006. First impression was that the highways are the biggest that I have ever seen, I think there was one that was 12 lanes on each side at one point. The Rogers Centre wasn't anything special, but the weather was gorgeous and the Blue Jays beat up the Mets, so it was a fun day. We didn't have time to check out the city though, it was on to Niagara falls right away.
  21. This is just begging for the usual list of name suggestions: "AT&T Arena" "MillerCoors Arena" "Leinekugel's Center" "Waste Management Center" "The Jane Petit Time Warner Roadrunner Arena" Seriously, I think part of that $90 million gift was the naming rights. It would be a shame to change it, but it will always be the BC to me.
  22. In Baltimore, last year, preferred parking was $10 (10 rows from the stadium) and the general parking was $7. Even at Yankee Stadium, it was only $15-$20 to park right across the road. The difference is that there is a monopoly on parking at Miller Park. They can charge whatever they want, only so many people are going to walk in or take a bus. Everywhere else, the lots are competing against each other. Maybe they should just have a surcharge for anyone wearing Cubs gear--maybe $40 for Illinois license plates?
  23. LINK For Opening Day: General: $15 Preferred: $25 For weekend games: General: $10 Preferred: $18 Buying parking in advance and weekday rates remain the same. Although I don't like price increases, the high payroll sort of demands it. Just another reason to buy season tickets and get the passes in advance.
  24. Prince will not hit 60 because he has no desire to hit 60. McGwire and Sosa were trying for a HR every at-bat. Prince has said he wants to be a doubles hitter also.
  25. Congrats to the Marlins and their fans, the first respectable baseball stadium in Florida will make a tremendous difference.
