  1. From the Brewers.com article. Doesn't sound like Benny's in the 2009 plans, no matter how much anyone hopes.
  2. If any acquisition is made using some of our prospects that can be considered blocked, the key is to get a guy that will be here longer than just this season. Obviously, the trade price would tick up a little, but its worth it for a small market team. We can't trade multiple prospects for just 80 games of one player, its to crippling and we'll dry up our talent pool both in the minors and the majors very, very quickly. For example, we'd lose both our trade target and Sheets next season, and have less guys to replace them with. I'd rather spend and extra prospect to get another year or two out of the pitcher. Summary: Time=Money. This was my main criticism of the Linebrink trade last season. Its not that we gave up the guys we did, necessarily, its that it was such a bottle rocket move: short, unimpressive, and generally failed to do anything. So for me, Lowe and Burnett are out as targets. I love Lincecum, and would probably pony up if he really could be traded. Blanton would be a solid option too, and probably a tick cheaper. The A's are usually quite willing to take single A prospects, whereas San Fran would likely as for near ready guys that are much harder to give up.
  3. If I can offer what will hopefully be taken as constructive criticism, it'd be really nice if the current season's stats could be included on player cards. It kinda defeats the purpose of clicking on LaPorta's name just to see a blank stat line. Maybe I'm just being too picky. I made this suggestion in the past too. We don't even have last season's stats on the player cards, rendering them absolutely useless. I mean, if its not possible to get live updating stats or to much work, I understand. But if possible, that's my top suggestion on how to improve the site.
  4. I blame these girls for Gallardo's knee. There is balance in the universe.
  5. Reed, I think you were a little dramatic at some spots there, but in general I agree. Exhibit F - LambeauLeap has a fantasy football forum that gets a fifth the traffic a fantasy baseball forum would get on Brewerfan.
  6. I hated that episode of CostasNOW. They stereotyped everything. The fans as dumb and purely emotional and blogs as pure mudslinging and paparazzi. I think that now with so many sources of media and points of view with voices, its up to the viewer to determine the validity of their source and the integrity of the journalism.
  7. I know they were only indirect/partial comparisons, but... 1.) Brantley's youth lends itself well to expect a bit more power as he rises in the organization, something that couldn't be said of the older (relative to level) Gwynn. 2.) Brantley walks and makes excellent contact. I think he projects much better to the major leagues because of that - if he maintains both skill sets as he moves up, he'll either get his OBP either way he can. Gwynn, on the other hand, has been a srikeout guy (16.1% minor league SO rate to Brantley's 11.5%), and Pierre was never much a walker at any time - those are the holes that kill their big league projection as much or more than a lack of power, IMO. Gwynn "forces" discipline and just ends up striking out more, while Pierre just swings at whatever and makes good contact. Brantley is truly the most disciplined of the three as shown by K/BB ratio, and also has the ability to make great contact. He's very exciting.
  8. Start the debate: Retire his number or no?
  9. 0. Wheeler 1. LaPorta 2. Gamel 3. Escobar 4. Brantley 5. Braddock 6. Salome 7. Green 8. Iribarren 9. Lucroy 10. Jeffress 11. Brewer
  10. I think that's an excellent call on Derek Lowe, if he hits the market. But I think even he, despite his age, will demand at least 4 years at $14M per. If Sheets can be resigned before he hits the market for, say, 4 years at $16M per + an option year, I think you might as well just do that.
  11. Well that certainly contradicts many of the reports right now. It also doesn't have any reasoning behind it. Like this one?
  12. We're setting up the pitchers for September. Once we get every team in the NL to give us first pitch fastballs down the middle, BOOM, we start swinging and score 150 runs in a week.

  14. Think Matt gets the call to AAA by the end of May? They almost have to if he keeps hitting anywhere close to what he has been.
  15. Parra+Gamel+Jeffress is as high as I would go. But it'd be awesome to get Roy.
  16. You HAVE to have a good catching first baseman. Don't sacrifice that to fit a girl there. I second putting another girl at 3B, with half the lineup as girls you won't get many hit down the left field line. One girl at catcher, and then two in the OF, probably the corners. Or stagger them. C - 3B - LF - RF - and then the best girl at her natural position (1B/2B/OF)
  17. I don't think its that most here don't understand contracts, as you seem to put it - most are just an incredibly nervous bunch. It shows in our hatred for these escalating contracts (What if we can't shed it?...What if he costs us the chance for better players?...What if, what if...AHHH!), and it also shows in the tendency for knee jerk reactions over player preformance, a general dislike of relievers, and constant threads like "Should we be worried about the Cardinals?" Mark A's stance the entire time he's been owner is that if the right player is available - we'll go over budget. Retaining the rest of Suppan's contract may limit Melvin's flexibility slightly, but I don't think it will get in the way of any truly key acquisitions, as they will be made regardless.
  18. awesome. ... Let me know! Should I use normalized stats (essentially OPS+ instead of OPS, HR+ instead of HR, ect.) or just the straight numbers?
  19. Apparently Billy Beane said some good things about this blog once. Weird: Then there's Eli Greenspan, a 17-year-old high school junior from Glencoe, whose blog, Eli's MLB Rumors, has drawn praise from Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane, among others. As of March 15, the site had drawn 1.6 million visitors and prompted Nike, PetSmart, Cingular and Circuit City to become advertisers.
  20. I'm not trying to create a seperate measurement for runs gained through speed. I'm saying that runs go beyond waiting on base until being knocked in by a teammate. We all agree with that second sentence. We disagree that run totals alone tell you anything close to the players extra ability to score over what their OBP would already suggest. Because I think it's fun to look at something beyond OBP. Really, this should be a discussion forum. I come here to discuss things. If the only purpose of a stat discussion was to beat people over the head with OBP, why would anyone waste their time here? Fun doesn't equal accurate though. Sure its a discussion forum meant for fun, but arguments still have to be true first, then fun second.
  21. If speed doesn't translate to runs, it doesn't provide any actual value. Yeah, but your looking at it backwards. Runs don't tell you how fast a person is, do they? Runs don't tell you how often someone gets on base. Runs don't tell you how good the hitters are behind that person. Runs are a result stat that have many influencing factors. As are wins and even ERA. I know you've acknowledged this, but then why use runs if you have to adjust the result for its proper context all the time? (Which would be a complicated process.) I would say the only way to extract value out of runs is to create a formula to generate a hitters expected amount of runs scored (using OBP, SLG, SB/CS, performance of the hitters around him, PA), then compare that over about 500-1000 games with his actual totals to see if a player does better that he should based on the overwhelmingly influential factors.
