  1. After watching the Rays this posteason, I've decided that I want a manager with glasses. Even if you make a dumb decision, at least you look smart. I do not want a manager who looks like Charlie Manuel, who is the poster boy for the "Managers should wear street clothes" movement.
  2. They should really offer a budget fantasy camp...one that is held during the winter somewhere in the upper midwest, rather than in Arizona, and one that features such Brewer greats as Bronswell Patrick, Joe Winkelsas, Jeff Juden, Willie Lozado, and Ron Rightnowar. That one would be more in my price range.
  3. Found this little blurb in the Hudson Star-Observer, of all places: "Milwaukee Brewers' General Manager Doug Melvin has one year left on his contract and he talked on the phone Tuesday with team owner Mark Attanasio about a possible extension. Attanasio says he definitely wants Melvin to stay around, and a deal may have to come quickly. " I will be very interested to see how this plays out over the next few days. It will be a very interesting offseason, to be sure, if we are finding a replacement GM as well as manager.
  4. The concern with Escobar is that while his .363 obp looks great, it was largely dependent on his .328 batting average. If he struggles in the majors, and only hits .250, you are looking at an OBP in the corey hart range.
  5. "We definitely want to keep Doug Melvin," Attanasio said. I don't think the suggestion is that Doug Melvin will be fired, but that Doug Melvin may walk away from the Brewers. There has been a lot of speculation that he did not want to fire Ned Yost, but was forced by Mark A. to do so. Doug Melvin may not want to take part in the hiring process for a managerial vacancy that he did not want to create.
  6. Coffey can be on the roster because Riske was on the roster, and is now on the DL, so he can be replaced by someone who was not on the roster as of Sep 1. He should definitely get on there, because he has been pretty consistent since he got here. I'm not positive, but I don't think this is right. Coffey and Lamb are not eligible for postseason, because they were not with the Brewers' organization on 9/1. Injured players can only be replaced with guys that were with the Brewers organization on 9/1 (although not necessarily on the major league roster at the time). I am very interested to see how Svuem manages the pen with fewer hands on deck. He did a good job optimizing matchups in his 12 game stretch, but that's much easier to do when you have 20 pitchers. Now he'll have a normal sized pen, and it will be much more difficult.
  7. I don't think it really matters because Sveum will go with the gritty veteran like most MLB managers do. I'd go with talent if I were him, but I highly doubt it will happen. Agree. We can talk about the merits of Escobar at Short for 5 or 6 more pages, but I think it is moot. If hardy can't go, Counsell is getting the call, whether we agree with it or not. I just don't see any way in which Sveum will do something as bold as starting Escobar at short.
  8. I think it's pretty obvious that GormanHarvey's master plan all along has been to build up trust with over 1000 posts and then dupe us all with a bogus story about J.J. Hardy getting hurt before the last 3 games of the season. Well played, GormanHarvey, but I'm not that gullible :-)
  9. Judging from the number of responses in this thread, I guess we can assume that all work from home internet jobs are scams or a waste of time :-)
  10. As an earlier poster said, Carlos Lee said he liked milwaukee, Francisco Cordero liked Milwaukee as well. In the end, they liked the extra money more than they liked Milwaukee. I expect it will be the same way with C.C.
  11. In the joy of watching the Mets lose last night, the realization hit me....the Cubs are really good. Regardless of how many regulars they rest, the Brewers have still got their work cut out for them this weekend. The Mets squandering a 5-1 lead can be considered a choke, but with the Cubs ability to put runners on base, and drive the ball out of the park, no lead is really safe.
  12. I am almost ready to join the "strikeouts are just outs" club, but I've got one last thing that I can't wrap my head around. When judging the effectivness of a pitcher, typically strikeout rate is one of the first stats to be referenced. If Strikeouts by the pitcher are considered a good thing, doesn't that inherently make them bad from the batters perspective? And on the actual topic of the thread, I think that the Brewers outfield should be Braun Cameron and Hart, with our 4th outfielder being a left-handed batter who can play all 3 positions, a Gabe Gross type.
  13. Per this article in the Appleton Post Crescent, there are 3 sets of teams left without a player agreement at low-A. Brewers Mariners Rangers Wisconsin TimberRattlers Hickory Crawdads Clinton Lumberkings Sure seems as though Brewers/TimberRattlers will be a reality. I can't see the Brewers leaving West Virginia for either Hickory or Clinton. That would be a downgrade in facilities, I believe.
  14. The last day of the regular season is a Wednesday??? That's new (Nevermind...October wasn't working right....last day is a Sunday, as usual). Only 1 weekend series at home in April...and it's against the Cubs. Opening day against the Cubs could be really ugly. Cubs fans + Brewers Fans + Excessive Drinking = Trouble. (Especially if one of the teams does real well in the playoffs, and feels the need to let the other fan base know about it).
  15. Is this new? Releasing the entire MLB schedule on one day? I seem to remember just a few years ago, trying to piece the Brewers schedule together out of what other teams had released. And that was during the offseason....not while the regular season was still in progress. Not that I'm complaining.
  16. This team has too much talent to have been Yosted away like it has. Let's not overstate the talent level of this team. They may have reached 23 games over .500 this year, but that does not mean they were/are a 93 win team. Remember, this team was projected by respected sites (Baseball prospectus) to win 83 games at the beginning of the year. It may be that this team actually over-achieved under Yost, rather than being held back by him. Look for Yost to land on Bobby Cox's staff, with the understanding that he will take over when Cox decides to retire...or maybe take over as soon as next year, if Cox decides to call it a career.
  17. Safe to say this is the first time that a team has been tied for a playoff spot with 12 games to play and has fired its manager?
  18. I had this thought when Gagne was being boo'ed during his warmups. I'm okay with booing when a player makes a bad error, or does something bad. I don't think its cool to be booing for past transgressions. What's the point of that? Certainly can't help the player.
  19. "The Office" is just as funny in standard mode as it is in HD I have to disagree with this, based on my personal experience. In SD, I was never able to read that Michael has a plaque on his wall that reads, "Proud Owner of a Quality Seiko Time Piece". So for me, the Office is funnier in HD.
  20. If your system is hooked up correctly...then the next step is a trip is to the eye doctor :-)
  21. lcbj68c...if you have an HD tv, and you don't see what the fuss is about, there is a definite possibility that you do not have your television hooked up to an HD source correctly. I don't wear glasses, but when I watch standard definition programming now, I feel like I need them, because everything is blurry. I don't want to come across as snotty, but I just don't want you to be missing out on the HD experience.
  22. Actually, Saturday's game against the Phillies will be on Fox, and in HD, I believe.
  23. Whatever team picks him up...their catching situation will be WOAH SOLVDD. Thanks for the memories, Lou.
  24. I found a site that has the 2007 odds. http://www.sportsclubstats.com/2007/MLB.html Per that site, the Brewers peaked at 82% chance of making the playoffs last year after beating the cubs 13-4 on June 30th. That's roughly where they are right now as well...albeit with only 1 month left to go this time.
  25. Does anyone know if Baseball Prospectus archives the postseason odds from previous seasons? I'm interested in seeing what the Brewers odds were at different points last season. Google'd it, but no luck so far.
