  1. I'm not a fan of the signing (mainly because of the draft pick) but people need to stop comparing this to Suppan/Wolf. Lohse was better than Suppan was and Wolf was actually very very good his 1st two years. The only things they have in common are mid 30s pitchers signed as FAs (and the Cardinal connection).
  2. Such as trading Greinke for Jean Segura and a couple of young pitchers? That is completely different. The Brewers were already out of it when they traded Greinke. Last year was still a go-for-it-year at the beginning.
  3. The hate isn't so much because Lohse is a bad pitcher. He's not awful but I also don't think he's as good as he was the last 2 years. The hate is because the Brewers were most likely a mediocre team and he probably won't turn them into a W.S. (or even playoff) contender) and now they lose a draft pick. That draft pick was more valuable to the future. Plus, like others have said, they lose the money attached to that draft slot. It's ok to not go for it every year. Sometimes you can plan for the future.
  4. I am pretty sure they get our pick ... Which is why it is a horrible signing No, it's been pointed out that the new CBA eliminates that. The signing team loses a pick but the other team receives a supplemental pick, not the signing team's pick.
  5. I am still not a big fan of streaming. I like having the physical disc. I have a huge dvd collection (over 1000) and there's just something nice about being able to see my actual dvds and picking out something to watch.
  6. I'm looking to fill a few spots in a head-to-head all MLB league. Draft is through yahoo next Monday (3/25) at 7 pm. $20 entry. Pretty standard categories but also added OPS, K/9, K/BB.
  7. I think we need to also remember that spring numbers don't mean a whole lot. I'd rather look at a guy's age and career MiLB/MLB numbers than the spring. Lots of guys have had great springs without it translating over (Erick Almonte immediately comes to mind).
  8. Yup. Seems like we have the same points made in the past 6 years everytime someone is signed to a long term contract. Every announced contract deteriorates into a discussion about trading all our best players in their prime so we can get some really good prospects. Except that's not it at all. If you have someone who has a certain value, you have someone capable of replacing them, you can get a good return (i.e. better long-term value than you give up), and you're not competing, why not do it? Like I said, you're not just trading for the sake of trading, you're only doing so if it makes sense. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I'm a big believer in Gomez but if the right trade came along, I would definitely think about it.
  9. Did the pilot air on network TV? Last night's episode of The Office was the pilot. It was meh.
  10. I don't think anyone is talking about selling high any chance you get. But simply that it's something you should consider every once in awhile, especially when it makes sense. It made sense with Hardy the year before they actually did it. It would have made sense with Hart/ARam at the break last year and Hart again before this season (and before he/Gamel got injured). If they could have gotten a good SP prospect for Axford, I would have done that as well (closers are relatively easy to find). And while I like the Gomez signing, if he's having another year like last year at the break and we're out of it, I would definitely consider trading him. Not sure the package you could get but I would target a high-reward SP and/or a 3B.
  11. Just about every show has its flaws. The Walking Dead is still better than just about everything on network tv. The only shows I might like better on network are Parks & Rec and Community (which are also flawed) but they are a completely different type of show. CBS is crap and I can't believe its been the #1 network for I don't know how many years. They have a formula for every comedy and for every drama and it's just rinse recycle repeat. There's very little thought behind those shows because they are so formulaic and procedural. I mentioned this earlier in this thread but I think sometimes people's expectations are too high, especially when you compare this (and other shows on HBO, AMC, FX, Showtime, even USA/TNT) to the crap on network tv. /endrant
  12. Well said. Any offense is a plus. The guy is that good defensively (not Ozzie Smith good but comparatively to the rest of the CF in the league).
  13. I think people are underestimating the impact Gomez has on defense. He's probably worth $5 million/year alone in CF if he's starting just about every game. And yes he doesn't get on base a lot, but when he does, he wreaks havoc (sometimes not so good but mostly great). So his baserunning is probably worth another $1 million/year. Last year he hit 20 hrs. I'd say that's worth at least $2 million. Sure he might not repeat that but he could probably do 12-15 again for sure. Obviously this is all very unscientific but I really think, as some posters have pointed out, this is fair considering his defense and speed alone. And guys don't tend to lose their speed until right around the time his contract will be up. So it's already pretty fair and if he hits like he did last year, it could be a steal.
  14. Isn't 7 the norm? 12 pitchers, 5 of which are starters. 5 bench players (1 Catcher, 2 OF, 2 IF).
  15. You should have stopped after very small sample size. Even if it counts the most, there isn't enough data to make a valuable conclusion one way or the other.
  16. I don't think you can really grade anyone from 2012 yet since the sample size is so small but I do love what Tyrone Taylor did in the little time he played last year. As for Rodon, that would be a definite A+ if he signed but they didn't pay him the extra 600k or whatever it was so I think that should be an F. Just because it was a 16th rounder doesn't mean much to me because IRC, they were ready to take him in like the 4th if he would've signed for slot but he said no. I think they knew he was something special but for whatever reason, they didn't want to fork over that extra money.
  17. I echo everything here. Let the young guys fail as starters before you move them to the bullpen. I really like Olmsted and he seems to have been doing pretty well this spring. With Axford hopefully returning to 2011 form and Hendo, Olmsted, etc., I think the BP should be at least average this year and not the crap that it was last year.
  18. Maybe it's like that thing where Tony Danza can only play characters named Tony. He was also one of the bad dudes in Commando but his name wasn't Luther.
  19. MVP Baseball is coming back? That would be awesome. That was my favorite baseball game of all-time. MVP 05 was great. I actually really enjoyed MVP 06 as well, which was the NCAA version.
  20. I'm sorry and no offense but these types of things just make me shake my head. I realize there are good intentions but these are incredibly cheesy and usually horrible. Granted, all you've done is change some words (and they're decent) but I just picture a poorly lit, poorly sung, poorly edited music video on youtube.
  21. Not to mention that twitter uses check marks to verify high-profile users. The first thing I do when following or reading someone's tweets is see if that check mark is there.
  22. Not happening anymore. And I think The Office has generally been terrible since Michael's last season. A lot of people said it started to go downhill after Jim & Pam's wedding and for sure after Michael left. There have been a few decent episodes but for the most part, it hasn't been good at all.
  23. Agreed. I hate when they convert a young guy with potential to the BP without really giving him a shot as a starter. Starters are more valuable than relievers. Let him fail as a starter before you move him.
  24. Actually, I don't think anything is official yet. They haven't announced whether it would be picked up or not. It has done decent numbers (for the time slot/NBC) since returning. It's kind of hard when they are competing against Idol and Big Bang Theory, 2 of the biggest shows on tv. The Execs know that Community has a strong (albeit small) cult following so it has that going for it. Plus, their other shows haven't exactly lit up the ratings either. Add to that the fact that 30 Rock/Office will be gone after this season, I think there is still a decent chance it is brought back. And they are pretty close to that magic 100 mark for syndication. And the losing the exec producers really isn't the reason season 4 hasn't been the same. It's losing creator/showrunner Dan Harmon which has affected the show the most.
  25. I'm not sure what, exactly, the answer would be... but the only thing I can lend is that, for certain directors, I tend to see a similar style from film to film (first one that jumps in my head here would be Eastwood). I haven't watched Argo yet, but I'll instantly be looking to see how it compares, stylistically, to The Town (& perhaps it won't at all). I think that some directors have the ability to affect their films on the macro level, whether that's through instructing contributors like DPs or editors, or simply choosing something like what time of day to film an exterior shot (for an example). I'm sure you'll get far better answers, but the similarities I feel like I notice in Eastwood's films were what jumped into my head upon reading your post. I definitely notice similarities across movies too. Like every Wes Anderson movie for instance. The soundtrack, the long shots, even the credits. But if you take one individual movie and were to judge how it was directed, what would you look at? With some directors, you know what their style is and therefore what they are contributing. But for a relative newcomer, you probably wouldn't know what they contributed unless you worked on the film.
