  1. Well, to be fair, most of the accolades are thrown at Alfonso Cuaron for the technology and scope of what he did. Sure the story is nothing great. You can't really appreciate it though without experiencing it in the theater. Cuaron basically invented an entire new technology and way of shooting to simulate the space aspect of it. To me, it's a lot like Avator. The story is really nothing special and it doesn't play very well on regular tv but the experience of seeing it in a movie theater is unlike anything else.
  2. I concur with every part of this post. We taligated right next to a truck that blasted Mexican music the whole time... really put a cherry on top of the whole tailgate experience. You must have been next to me. I had the same experience.
  3. Count me in this group, except I didn't think it was a great season. I know it's always been over the top but this season just seemed even more so. There were 3 separate groups of villains, plus the hacker group, and everything else, yet everyone was somehow linked? Just too much packed into one.
  4. I was a huge Gomez supporter because he had all the physical tools and I was just waiting for him to put them together. With a guy like Scooter, he doesn't have the natural ability/tools that a guy like Gomez has. As such, I don't know how much more room there is for him to develop, we may be seeing his peak. Obviously you never know and I'm rooting for him. He seems to get the most he can out of his abilities and fans are always going to love that scrappy, hard-working player (like a McGehee, Eckstein, etc.) but I think their success is a lot more short-lived than a guy with the physical tools like Gomez. I guess I'm just waiting for him to turn back into the pumpkin.
  5. Sorry but OPS isn't always the best indicator of production. Overbay has hit a lot of balls hard, has gotten key hits driving in runs in key situations, and has shown patience at the plate with 23 BB. Overbay's not a long term solution and if they can upgrade, great but as far as what he's done this season, it's been better than I expected. I don't trust Francisco. When he's hot, he's hot, but when he's cold he's awful He's already started to tail off, hitting .185/.241/.444 in his last 20 games. Overbay only has 17 BB on the season as of today. Francisco has a higher OBP (by .002) but a higher slugging by .199. I know OPS isn't everything but it is a pretty good measure. Even taking Francisco out of the equation, it should have been obvious that Overbay was finished just by looking at his past 3 years. But maybe they were just signing him for his Vanilla Ice looks?
  6. Lot's of guys have a high career OPS. I'm sure Jason Bay is out there looking for work. Unfortunately, what a guy has done in the past isn't necessarily indicative of what he will do in the future. Sizemore hasn't been able to stay healthy and hasn't produced an OPS north of .750 since 2009. I liked him a lot in his prime but it appears he doesn't have much left. If we're talking about strictly minor league depth, sure I don't see a problem with it, as long as he isn't taking PT away from the younger guys (Gindl, Schafer, etc.). But I won't expect much simply because he's produced in the past.
  7. You also loved Travis Ishikawa, who looks like Babe Ruth compared to Overbay. A .626 OPS out of your 1st baseman is not serviceable, especially with a .688, .727, and .670 the past 3 years. Overbay has been done for awhile. I liked him 10 years ago and I'm sure he's a good dude but it was a mistake to replace Francisco with him. Even with all of Francisco's warts, he was obviously a superior player and actually had room to develop.
  8. I cannot stand Keith Law. I'm trying to find articles about his previous picks. I found this one quite interesting about Chris Sale. Obviously everything is a crap shoot and highly-rated guys flame out, while others can make an impact. These are all opinions and often you don't have a chance to see everyone in person or even on video so you rely on others. But Keith Law can't even admit when he's wrong. http://www.southsidesox.com/2011/12/1/2603257/keith-law-still-cannot-admit-he-was-wrong-about-chris-sale
  9. Whenever I see "Special Assistant", I always think it should be followed by "to the traveling secretary."
  10. Wang has not really had the opportunity that a "regular" last man in the pen would have had by now. The Brewers haven't really been blown out in many games and haven't blown out teams in many games either. As the season goes on, this should change and he will see more innings. I also think he should be given some opportunities in certain LOOGY situations. For instance, when we're up by 3 or even down by 3, against lesser hitters. Let him face one batter. Worst case, that guy hits a HR. If Martin Maldonado can get big league hitters out, Wang should be able to as well. (/half blue).
  11. It's not bad. Love that they kept the long fight scene.
  12. Not sure why all this venom is/has been spewed at Wang. Every team can use a mop-up guy/long-inning guy. That's what Wang is at this point and should be used for. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you want to look at it since they have been outstanding so far), the bullpen has been used a lot so far and with back to back extra inning games and a short start, Wang had to be used. This loss counts no more than any others. And we should consider ourselves lucky for winning the last two games.
  13. That's what I meant, Capuano is a current reliever but was a starter when he had the surgery.
  14. http://msn.foxsports.com/ufc/haymaker/5-on-5-team-mma-is-the-craziest-thing-you-ll-see-today-040814
  15. Just curious if there's been any studies on Tommy John surgery/injuries to starters vs. relievers. Off the top of my head, it seems that most guys that have TJ have been starters. I know there are current relievers who have had the surgery (Capuano immediately comes to mind), but the majority seem to get injured while a starter (like Cappy).
  16. That place is most definitely worth a stop. When a group of us went to Cincy in 2008, that was easily the highlight of the trip, for me at least.
  17. Spitfire's on State. I think better than Points East. I believe the wings are fried and grilled like Points East but come in a variety of flavors.
  18. Not attacking you or anything but people always bring up "name recognition" and "brand" when it comes to the Olympics. That's why people say Lolo Jones made the bobsled team. Personally, I don't care about established name recognition or anything like that. I just want to see great athletes perform. You don't get the name recognition/brand until you do something great. That's what the Olympics (should) allow athletes to do. Everybody starts out as a nobody until they do something great.
  19. Doubt it. They put Bryan in the Chamber to shut the crowds up for the next month and they're likely hoping that when Sheamus eventually screws Bryan at EC setting up their Mania match that the fans won't care enough anymore to hijack Mania. Yeah they would probably do something dumb like have Sheamus win with a brogue kick in 18 seconds or something. Oh wait...
  20. Exactly my thoughts. Garza will miss some time as a gesture of good faith, he will sign a 4 year/$4 million deal.
  21. I just got back from the suite-holder's luncheon. I saw Doug get a phone call at like 12:15 and was just joking that he was making a deal. Turns out I was right. That was the first question asked to him and he basically said there's lots of rumors that get started but they're not all completely true. There is a process to things, like physicals. But yeah, I really like the signing.
  22. Exactly how I feel as well. I might have cared about steroids 5-10 years ago when all the hoopla started to come out but as I've gotten older, it really doesn't bother me as much. I understand baseball records are "sacred" and that's a driving force behind a lot of this but it's really gotten ridiculous. As far as the cheating argument is concerned, people have been looking for ways to cheat or get an edge since the invention of just about every sport. Whether it be corking bats, doctoring baseballs, popping pills, injecting steroids, or rubbing some cream, there will always be something. People just view PEDs as more evil for some reason. As for what Braun owes us, it's nothing. Sure we pay to see him play but that's really all he does: play. It's a game. It's not life or death, he's just an athlete. He made a mistake and he apologized. Whether you buy his apology or not, he doesn't "owe" anybody anything. You might really want to hear something but he's not obligated to tell you. I want the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as much as anyone but it's up to Braun on whether he wants to actually tell it (and how he tells it). It might damage his reputation if he doesn't come out and speak directly about everything but he doesn't "owe" anything.
  23. .300 OBP? I think that's an exaggeration. For all we know, a non-PED using Braun could easily still be a .350-.375 OBP guy. Heck, for all we know, his 2012 season line is what a non-using Braun can do. Braun still has an incredible amount of talent. PEDs are not the steroids they were in the 90s. I think they are mostly used for recovery/prevention of injuries nowadays. Sure there might be a little bit of strength or whatever added but I think most stuff is used to stay on the field. And perhaps that's why Braun spent his first time on the DL this year. So we may still get the same averages of the old Braun but possibly for less games.
  24. By everyone I assume you mean scouts and people who analyze the draft. However, there were people on this board who thought Jungmann/Bradley weren't potential 1/2 pitchers at the time. Those scout rankings are not gospel. I had no problem taking 1 of them (though I preferred Barnes/Gray) as a safer pick (I admit I liked Bradley better than Jungmann simply because he was a LHP) but also wanted (and even posted I believe) Guerrieri or Fernandez as the high-risk/high-reward type. I wasn't alone in that line of thinking either. I believe when you have 2 1st round picks like that, at least one of them should be a high-reward type. And you might say that they both were high-reward types but I, and others, didn't believe that was the case. To me, a high-reward type is a HS who has more projection left. With advanced college pitchers, there usually isn't as much room left for projection.
