J.J. Putz?

Posted

I think the Brewers may need to add another reliable reliever in the bullpen for the playoff run, what about getting J.J. Putz?

With King Felix in the DL and Weaver sucking badly, the Mariners need more pitching of the SP / long relief variety, something the Brewers have surplus. Maybe an offer of ZachJack, Cappellan and Dessens for Putz could interest the Mariners.

Adding Putz could help ease the workload of Turnbow and CoCo down the stretch, and a useful reliever to have in the championship run if the Brewers do make the post-season. Moreover if the Brewers are unable to re-sign CoCo, they could remain in good shape with Turnbow and Putz in the backend of the bullpen next season.

Putz, age 30, is under contract till 2009 with a team option for 2010. His contract details: salaries of $2.2M in 2007, $3.4M in 2008 and $5M in 2009- + a team option for 2010 worth $8.6M or a $1M buyout Link

Finally, having watch how awesome one JJ has been for the Brewers, adding a second JJ to the team could be a good idea.

Putz is pretty much a bigtime talent, I'd be thrilled to get him, but Jackson, Dessens and Cappelan would be a steal. I'd imagine we'd have to give up a bit more talent than that, maybe not though...

I think I really like the idea of trying to add a real solid back of the pen arm. Not only would it help up a lot this year, but with Cordero expected to leave next season, bullpen would be a need next year. Getting a guy now, like a Putz, would lessen the blow.

I was convinced that this thread was a cosmic put-on until I googled his name!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

How do 3 closers co-exist for the rest of the year? That's the one thing that would concern me. Do we really think DBow is going to be satisfied with being the 8th inning guy forever? I guess our odds of retaining Cordero aren't very likely.

No we wouldn't Bill Bavasi is an idiot.

I can see Doug adding a relief pitcher, even one that makes some decent money, but that's a big contract for a guy who would be your 7th inning guy at this second.

Now, if talks with Coco go nowhere, it's possible, but not likely.

At first I was thinking that JJ Putz would end up costing a lot more than that, and I still think that his value is much higher than the players mentioned, but Bravasi is really an idiot.

Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez need I say more.

Will Inman for Putz?

We're ok for prospect starting pitchers and Putz would be solid insurance if CoCo leaves in FA (and if he keeps pitching like this, no way we could afford him, anyway).

No way would i give up on Inman for Putz. I would say that is probably equal value for Putz as he is seemingly underrated, but I wouldn't even contemplate getting rid of Inman for a reliever.

I guess we have to take this all back conceriding Putz will have Tommy John surgery now.

if Putz was an ordinary reliever, or even a good 8th inning guy, then Inman would be too much, but Putz is/was becoming a proven closer--way more valuable then an ordinary good reliever. and then considering the salaries of relievers and closers, they're not all that far apart (Clemens excluded), so GM's must see closers as nearly equal to a decemt starter.

plus we've got a good #6 starter in Villy, a higher-ceiling prospect #7 starter in Gallardo, and i think that makes the next-best, Inman, expendable.

plus Putz or not, if Melvin makes a midseason acquisition, right now the hole is in middle relief and closer insurance if CoCo leaves. and when you trade, it seems the other teams always want a pitcher in return, so looking in my crystal ball, right now I see Inman being traded for a reliever this season, whoever that reliever might be.

Seattle is going to want some talent for Putz. I have not scene in any of the trade scenarios in this thread that have us giving up anything. Although it would be nice you are not just going to steal another teams closer.

Is it really?Putz makes less than what Counsell will for the next two years to hit .215 and chop one weak grounder after another to second base.

This is the big key,Cordero is going to want some big cash after this seasonand if we don't pay it,somebody else will. Not only would Putz give us an absolutely lethal 1-2-3 punch in the pen this year where we really look good for a playoff chance,Putz could be our closer the next two years much cheaper than Cordero.Check out his numbers last year and this year so far.

2006--

2.30 ERA

.092 WHIP

78 IP 104K 13BB

.207 BAA

This year so far 1.23 ERA and a .061 WHIP

Now i don't expect any trade like this, but i'd be all for Doug exploring it.Given Putz's dominant numbers and very team friendly contract,i highly doubt Seattle would really be interested in trading the guy.I'd assume they would want more in return than Melvin would be willing to give up and Seattle would have every right in asking alot.

At this moment,Putz is one of the best closers or relief pitchers in the game,it's just that few know this because he plays in Seattle. When you factor in the nice contract,i doubt highly Inman would be enough even if they were listening to offers.

Adding as many top quality releivers as possible is a good idea.

I don't want to meet the Braves bullpen in the playoffs. Soriano, Gonzales and Wickman make for one solid closer. Who says you only need one.

I like the idea Tigerbrew, I was thinking of the same package for Chad Cordero, but I didn't think of Putz. I'd like to get one of these deals done sooner than later. Niether jackson nor Cappellan are on the top of the depth chart at AAA, but should have good value to other teams.

After tonight, I remember why we were skeptical or relying on Turnbow coming in to the season.

Let's go get another 8th inning guy.

Posted

Yes, one bad outing where he was in too long means he stinks.

No, no. Don't get me wrong, I'm a patient guy and obviously wouldn't make a decision on one game. There were reasons for skeptism coming into the year, those reasons still exist.

When Turnbow is off, he's way off. Hopefully this last game is just a blip in his game log, but its asking for trouble to rely on a guy that could become worthless overnight. Even when he's "on" he doesn't really look "on".

Losing a set-up guy without a decent replacement can spell just as much disaster for the team as losing someone like Fielder.

Actually, I think it would be Turnbow, Putz, Cordero. But one question, why are we talking about Putz? Aren't the Mariners in the race? It is May, why would they trade their closer?
Posted

Somebody to think about and the reason why.

Weathers. he's a great reliever and accepts whatever role is given him. he could be a closer, 8th inning guy or 7th or 6th or whatever.

there is talk out of cincy that Guyuardo (sp - was i close?) will be ready to return in june. this same talk seems to believe he will reclaim his closer role, and Weathers will revert back to being a set-up guy.

What does cincy need that the brewers have? They need young starting pitching. they could also probably use a young prospect.

I read yesterday about the Cardinals trading todd ziele a little past his prime to the Cubs. So interdivison trades do happen.

i'd still like to see the brewers add a quality veteran leftie for their bullpen. i realize they are few in number and the cost in terms of what we'd have to give up is usually high.

Posted

That's why i would go after weathers- especially if the reds tell him thanks but we're going to go with Guyardo as our closer now. the reds signed hermanson in the off season to a minor league deal and announced they thought he would be their closer. he didn't make it out of Spring training.

While i'd like to see the brewers go after weathers, i think their #1 target should be a veteran lefty reliever. Unfortunately, usually the good ones are not on the trade market.
