Mench,Turnbow for Lieber Pending on Phillies

The Philadelphia Inquirer says a deal sending Jon Lieber to Milwaukee for Kevin Mench and Derrick Turnbow is in place, pending the result of the Phillies' negotiations with the White Sox.

The Phillies might not make the trade unless they can get Freddy Garcia from the White Sox, probably using Aaron Rowand and Gavin Floyd. It's unclear whether that will work, and White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen isn't wild about the idea. "We have a center fielder right now," Guillen said. "I won't trade one of my pitchers one-for-one for Rowand right now. He's a good player, but we're not desperate for a center fielder. I love Aaron, but we need more."

I hope this turns out to be like the Overbay trade. When that first came out I believe that it was rumored to be for just Dave Bush. Then when the deal finally happend it wound up being a lot better than rumored.

It does appear that this deal isn't a sure thing by any means though.

I can deal with Mench and Turnbow for a solid starting pitcher (even if it is just for one year) just so long as the Brewers keep Capellan

yea, i'm hoping for more than just liber here....melvin never trades without getting a nugget or two, and i'm sure thats still the case....

This one was out there early this morning, but it's no sure thing. The Phils are also talking to Texas, trying to move Rowand, maybe getting relief help in that deal.

The White Sox seem to have lots of options right now, if it really does hinge on them, this could take several days to play out.

As far as Mench goes, Baltimore has been on again/off again...now they think they've got a shot at Luis Gonzalez again...whoever doesn't get him will be on the phone for Mench or Jenkins from the sound of things.

Well including Turnbow is addition by subtraction and provides some salary relief. For me that makes it a better deal than just Mench for Lieber.

But after reading that the Dodgers have interest in Mench, I couldn't help but prefer to grab a young arm out of their loaded system.

I read somewere the Dodgers were totally against trading any of their prospects away.

What else is new? I wonder how hanging on to Joel Hanrahan, Edwin Jackson and Greg Miller worked out for them.

I'm a little confused on the Dodgers....they have Ethier and Kemp with Pierre in the OF...but they want to add one. Are they not sold on Kemp or something?

Lieber would be a decent back-end of the rotation guy, but I would hope that the Brewers would at least get a little salary relief as well.

Turnbow and Mench combined would make about what Lieber is this year. I think Turnbow is done, personally, so I like this deal a lot.

That said, this really seems like a long shot, ATM.

I just think this is a trade of junk for near junk with no salary relief. I'm against this trade also because I don't think it helps the team get better, unless subtraction of two players for one is viewed as improvement. Maybe another player from somewhere else has to viewed into the equation, but this is a ho-hum deal. I've mentioned before that Lieber is in decline and will be in his age 37 year next year. He's nearly a right-handed Doug Davis and is 6 or 7 years older for near the same money. Humbug!

And he probably doesn't have that awesome wavy hair, to boot.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I think Turnbow's done, too. At the very least, I don't want to see him work out his problems on the mound with the Brewers anymore. It almost killed me when Ned kept sending him out there.

Turnbow = first half fan favorite = join the jettisoned queue.

Beware Bill Hall, or maybe everyone should just boo Billy so Doug has no itch to get rid of him.

Lieber's old and didn't have a very good year last year but his enderlying stats were still decent and he's only signed through next year, anyway. If he has a good first half and Yo! is ready, he could be dealt at the deadline.

I just want Turnbow's silly contract off the books. He never should have been signed to that in the first place.
