Cars for Tall Guys?

Hey tall guys -- what are you driving? Are you comfortable?

 

I'm 6'4" and weigh about 215. I've got a 35" inseam and a 36" sleeve length and I'm in the market for a new car. I'd prefer a sedan, but would be happy with a SUV or a minivan if I could find one that fir me perfectly.

 

As I've been shopping I haven't been able to find much of anything that I fit into comfortably. The first problem is headroom: lack of adequate headroom rules out about 60% of all cars and 10% of all SUV's and vans.

 

If I find a vehicle with adequate headroom, then I have to worry about legroom. While most cars can provide adequate length, there are usually two related problems. First, to get me my required legroom, I have to move my seat so far back that the back of my seat is practically touching the seat behind me, leaving anyone who would sit behind me with no leg room at all. The other problem is the configuration of the driver's area, especially the size of the console. To take advantage of the leg room, often times my knees or legs are either pressed up against the console or have to be bent and positioned to avoid the console. This is never bothersome over short distances, but gets annoying over long hauls. I have this problem with my Kia Sedona minivan as well as my current Buick Rendevous.

 

I'm going to go try the Scion, Nissan Cube and Kia Soul to see how they fit, but for some reason I'm not too excited about them.

 

Anyway, I'd love to hear what you tall guys are driving and if you're comfortable.

my brother is freak-show tall and liked his Volvo. fits ok in his Pontiac now, too. i'm very close to your height/build, and really have no problems in anything except for sports cars.

I'm 6'6 and love my Saturn Vue. I actually fit in to my wife's Toyota Corolla pretty well when the seat is all the way back.

No, TLB, you were not the only one to instantly think of that Simpsons episode.

Unfortunately, since I am the utter opposite of a tall guy, there's nothing substantive I can contribute to this thread otherwise.

I keep reading that VW bugs and mini Coopers are supposed to be good for really tall guys. But when I think of myself trying to get in or out of one, I, too, think of that Simpsons episode and therefore refuse to entertain the possibility.

My 6'3'' self was surprisingly comfy in a Toyota Matrix. If you don't mind randomly accelerating, I'd give it a shot.

I'm 6'2"+ and have a 2007 Ford Fusion. If you get the power driver seat you can lower it down and with it all the way back I have a good amount of room. My wife has a 2010 Ford Fusion and it fits me the same way. We both have the moon roof option so if you don't take that there should be more head room too.

My friend has a 2008 Scion xB and there is plenty of head room in there...but it's not my style of car.

Get a Sedan Deville. I'm about 6'2" and drowned in that thing. My friend, who's maybe 6'5"/325lbs drove one and was totally comfortable.

I haven't driven the newer ones, though, so I'm not sure if they've changed. Cadillacs tend to depreciate pretty fast, so you can often get a 4/5 year old one pretty cheap.

The Subaru Legacy with the power options is great for taller guys. My company's fleet management contractor does regular tests for these types of issues and has picked the Legacy, Toyota Camry, Buick Enclave and the Nissan Rogue as great vehicles for both small and larger people...

I am 6'8", and drive a Honda Accord. I have to configure the seat perfectly, and it makes the seat behind me unusable, but it is comfortable. My son is 6'5" and drives the Cube. It is ugly as sin, and I think there are too many blind spots, but it fits him well. It is a little short in legroom for me. The car that fit me best was an 03 Durango, but the gas mileage was awful. We rented an Impala recently, and that and the Chrylser 300 both have adequate leg room. I was actually a big fan of the Impala.

6'3" 220 here, with a 36-37" sleeve. Had a Dodge Charger SXT and loved it - didn't have to put the seat all the way back at all. Good looking car, didn't have any problems with it, fun to drive, fit great in it. Didn't have any problems with a Ford Taurus prior to that. Have a Lincoln MKX now and it is REALLY comfortable and the perfect height (don't have to stoop down to get in - just slide right in), but I don't know if that is out of your price range and you said you wanted a sedan.

 

Just make sure it has a power driver's seat and a telescoping steering column. My brother-in-law used to have a Nissan 350Z and I fit just fine in it. With most cars that have a power driver's seat you shouldn't have any problem with it.

I'm 6'2" and was 200 when I bought the car and I have and 02 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Since its just me myself and I, I just have the seat back and I have plenty of room. The only caveat is that its kind of low to the ground so if you aren't flexible, it probably wouldnt work for you. It's got pretty of oomph and a sports stick.

Nissan Maxima's, the new style in 2009. Lot's of room, and hands down one of the most fun cars I have ever driven.

Did some car shopping this weekend. Test drove the following: Honda Accord, Toyota Avalon and Camry, Subaru Legacy and Forrester, Nissan Maxima, Altima, Rogue and Juke, Kia Optima and Sportage, Volkswagon Jetta and Passat. It was a busy Saturday.

 

Of these, only the Nissam Maxima, Altima and Volkswagon Passat fit me properly. I could get in an out without crazy contortions, plenty of leg room and head room good visibility and the consoles were not a problem. If I had to rate them, it would be 1) Maxima, 2) Passat, 3) Altima. The Maxima is a nice car. I still want to try the Hyundai's, Fords, Lincolns and Chevys. I also want to take a look for some well aged and well preserved luxury cars.

Drive the Charger man... SXT AWD. And yeah, I think the Camry and Accord are overrated. Had a few as rentals and have not been impressed.

I believe that Chrysler products in general do well with interior room.
