Brewers linked to Derek Holland

signed to a five year contract extension in march worth less than 30 million

rotoworld thinks the haul will be huge for the rangers

what would you give up?

They only going to trade him if they get grienke. So I'd think they'd want more minor league prospects. Also they need a Cf to replace Hamilton. So maybe Gomez , Thorneburg, and another top 10 prospect.

I am not a huge fan but he is cost controlled. ERA + of only 97 last year after 110 and 112 in 2010 and 2011. Seems like a league average starter to me. Peripherals seem to indicate there is some room for improvement; pretty good K/BB, WHIP, and H/9 figures.

Depending on the position that Texas would want back; I would think we have the prospects to pull it off.

I wouldn't give up a lot to get him to be honest. I don't think the 4.71 career ERA is really all that much of a fluke. Moving out of the AL and out of that park helps obviously but I still think he is a below average starter with a pretty thin margin of error on the upside. It won't surprise me if he has a Dave Bush career.

Seems like his "value" has always been tied to his great post season a couple years ago.

This reminds me of a fairly recent Brewers signing. All Brewer fans scream in horror

Except that Holland is capable of throwing his fastball above 90mph.

Why exactly would Holland cost a huge haul? He is a #4/5 SP with one decent season and has never hit 200 IP. I guess he's young and relatively cheap, but still not that interested.

His contract has $26MM remaining over 4 years plus 2 option years at $11MM/$11.5MM and a $1.5MM/$1MM buyout.

If he were a free agent, would you sign him to this deal? Due to his age, I'd certainly say "yes", but I don't think there's enough surplus value there for them to ask for tons in return.

Not interested. Think about it, if the Rangers don't want to keep him around at that contract, why would the Brewers want to take their scraps? I'd rather see what they have in the young guys.

While I agree it was boosted during that time, Derek Holland was a rather big prospect out of the minor leagues. Expectations have pretty-much always been high on Holland.

Maybe a main reason they're shopping him is in the hopes of signing Greinke (clearing payroll room)

Point taken, but supposedly the Rangers have a ton of money to spend. Would clearing Holland's salary really be significant to their bottom line? If they were trying to move Holland, I'd see it as more of a talent thing. At a glance, the only major needs for the Rangers would be catcher and center field (if Hamilton walks). I don't think that I'd consider moving any of the Brewers pieces at those positions for Holland. He'd be a relatively safe and affordable acquisition (much preferable vs. the likes of Dempster, Lohse, etc.to me), but I don't see the upside if you are parting with anything substantive.
