Lohse, Crew look to ignite bats vs. Pirates

By Adam Berry / MLB.com | 4/17/2015 8:03 PM ET

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates and Brewers, two of the Majors' least productive offensive clubs so far this season, will look to get on track Saturday night in the second game of their weekend set at PNC Park. Right-hander Kyle Lohse is set to take the ball for Milwaukee opposite Pittsburgh left-hander Jeff Locke.

Three things to know about this game:

• Locke defeated the Brewers at Miller Park on April 10, allowing two runs over six innings as the Pirates won, 6-2. The Bucs won eight of Locke's final nine starts at PNC Park last season as he went 4-1 with a 3.17 ERA during that stretch.

• Lohse carries an 0-2 record and 11.17 ERA into Saturday's start, but there are reasons for optimism. After an ugly season debut, Lohse allowed four runs over 6 1/3 innings his last time out. And he's fared well against the Pirates (11-4, 3.81 ERA) throughout his career.

• With Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez sidelined at least two or three weeks by a strained right hamstring, shortstop Jean Segura has started the last two games in the leadoff spot.

I'm heading out of town today, so another mod will need to edit in the lineups once they're announced this afternoon. Please & thank you!

I also probably won't be home in time to get the IGT up for tomorrow's game.

Ryan Braun is leading off?!

Was sort of hoping that Aramis would get the day off, but maybe that will come tomorrow.

Lucroy batting .143? Just awful.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

It's kind of a Sundayish lineup, only on Saturday. It's almost like a long weekend?

I mean, I guess if you don't play Logan Schafer ever, he has no chance to improve.

Welp, Brewers, see if you can get on the right side of the Uecker Line.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Yup, so move him into the 3 hole.

:ohwell

This line-up looks horrendous, which means we will score 8 runs!!!

It's just like batting two pitchers

Seems like the Brewers scratch and clawed for one run, only to have it gone in the first two batters. The Pirates plate Polanco here and I think I'll be ready to call it. lol

Lohse is downright awful. Wow this stinks. So much for getting anything for him at the deadline.

So glad we gave up a 1st round pick for Lohse. Two years of no playoff appearances and the third year it looks like he's done. Money and assets well spent!

HAHA! :laughing

Good job looking in hindsight. Are you saying everything in Brewers history was a a mistake since they have never won a world series? It will suck if he doesn't turn it around, but I still think it was the right move at the time.

I like how Bill and Matt keep bringing up the Giants and their losing streak. Like that's supposed to make the fans be okay with how crappy the Brewers are.

I think anyone trying to make comparisons about how such and such championship team started slow, too, is silly. Going into this season, the best we thought the Brewers could do was hopefully stay healthy and compete for a playoff spot. As constructed, this is not a championship caliber team so those comparisons really should stop any day now.

Losing isn't really the surprising thing. The surprising thing - though this shouldn't surprise me - is that the funk they were in at the end of the year has carried into this year. I kind of figured we'd see .500 ball this season, and we still very well could, but holy smokes is this ugly.

It would be hindsight if I wasn't against the signing from the beginning.

Fair enough if you were against it because you didn't think the Brewers would compete.
