Nelson shut down for season… Peralta too

Per Sophia in today's pregame show. Nothing's significantly wrong, but the feeling is that it doesn't make sense to take any risks at this point.

 

Tyler Cravy will take tomorrow's start. The pitcher who'll take Nelson's turn on Sunday is yet to be determined.

I agree it's probably for the best but it would be nice for him to get over the potential mental hurdle of pitching to a batter before February.

A subsequent report, also from Sophia, said that there was "still head trauma." Either I missed that in the first report or she worded the second one differently. I don't see any big conflict, though.

Jimmy has been added to the 60-day disabled list in order to make room for the Biloxi calllups.

He had hit the wall anyway and hasn't been the same pitcher the last month. The entire staff looks mentally drained at this point. That's what being out of it since tax day will do.

Its hard to say if its better for him mentally to jump back in now or wait until February. Getting him back out there when he isn't 100% can have some back side effects too.

We're not in the position to know where Jimmy or anyone else is mentally, so all we can do is speculate from our position. As Briggs said, the staff "looks" mentally drained vs. saying the staff "is" mentally drained.

 

We do know that oftentimes when coming back from an injury, players like to make a late season appearance vs. waiting until spring. That's cool when it's safe to do it. Given that this is a head injury and there isn't much time to recover, it makes sense to wait.

His oblique has flared up again, and I think at this point it's smart for that to be it. We've been trying to figure out some things with his sinker, and we saw in the last start there might be some compensation going on for that.

 

It's been a disappointing season for Wily. I think what's clear to us is he has to come next spring and be as eager as anyone to get back to 2014 form.

Just when I was getting optimistic Peralta, Nelson, Jungmann fade down the stretch. Yes, Nelson was hit but had been struggling the last few weeks. Really need a 1a and 1b, and whenever that looks promising something always seems to go south.

I'm certainly okay with shutting down Nelson and Peralta at this point, but I'm not particularly okay with Cravy being the spot starter. Let's be serious - he's never going to spend regular time in even an average rotation. We need to be stretching our prospects, and at this point our pitching prospect list is at least somewhat deep. Even if it's someone like Thornburg, I'd rather watch him than Cravy.

 

Oh well. I had better get to see Lopez start before the end of the season, or I'll be seriously disappointed.

Jungmann has really died off, not sure if it is fatigue or his luck has finally ran out. He has been hit hard lately and struggling. Cravy should be in the Pen for good now but guess they just want a few more looks. Excited for the rookie 6 man rotation still!

Audition time for sure. Davies made a statement last night. I'll give him this. He's fearless on the mound. Shutting down that Cub offense was impressive.

 

I still think most of these guys probably need a bit more seasoning. But it's a nice group. Just wish they had that leader and a lefty in the group, though Hader's not far away. They really need Nelson to be the ace. Looked promising there until he tailed off. But the ability is there.

 

As for guys struggling, it can just be that mentally they're worn down. Losing will do that. Which is why I keep saying that they need to put a competitive team on the field even if contending seems out of reach.

I'm not ready to write Cravy off, but out of the six guys who will be starting the upcoming games, I think that he's the one that we have the least amount of need to see. I'd bet on him starting 2016 in the AAA rotation or in the Brewers bullpen.

 

I don't know if innings limits come into play or not. All I really know is that per Brian Anderson, Jungmann has an innings limit, but he's not in danger of reaching it.

 

If Cravy were skipped on Sunday and López moved up, that would mean one more start for Davies. So really, it's a start for Davies vs. a start for Cravy. It wouldn't make any notable difference for the others.

 

If it were me, I'd have skipped Cravy and used him as the backup in case other plans fell through.

Cravy is probably in the same boat as Thornburg in being a 6th starter type potential. Thornburg did better in the low minors and Cravy picked up later in the high minors, but their numbers are very similar.

Id shut down Jungmann too. He has shown plenty and he seems to be out of gas. Id hate to see him develop some bad habits to end the year.

 

It doesnt matter who we start going forward to fill his spot to end the year. September results tend to be very misleading anyhow.

I wish these last few games they'd just give each starter 3 innings a game. Or heck, they have enough relievers now you could just have 9 guys throw 1 innings a piece.

Yep. Treat them like spring training games. Bring up as many as you can and let them all play each game. Even the Arcia thing. If they are not worried about starting his clock, then bring him up and let him pinch hit in the games and take a seat on the bench the rest of the game. The more exposure guys get to the league, the better.

Except for Schaefer. Why the hell is this guy playing over Peterson or Reed? I'd rather throw Rogers out there than him too.
