Reyes to have MRI...might need TJ?

Potential huge blow to Cardinals who have question marks galore as it is. Beyond Maritnez, they 3 starters coming off seasons with ERA's of 4.62 and up in Wainwright (4.62), Leake (4.69) and Wacha (5.09) to go with Lance Lynn coming off his own TJ surgery. Suddenly by comparison the Brewer rotation not looking so bad.

this one will hurt them---he's the best pitching prospect they've had in a while, and him having the surgery right now sets him back until mid 2018. major loss.

Yet somehow it never seems to matter to the Cardinals. They will still finish no worse than second in the division and will likely get a wild card.

I don't know about that. Could they still finish 2nd in the Central? Sure, but I don't see them as strong wild card contenders. They didn't make it last year so their playoff run's been broken.

Right. They can't be totally discounted but they'll need Lynn to come back strong, Wacha to bounce back and Wainwright to stop the slide at age 35. Those are some significant ifs. They were counting heavily on Reyes to take some of the pressure off.

The way things are going, the Brewers might have a shot at 2nd place in the division. I wouldn't predict it or say it's likely but I think it's in the realm of possibility

As a Brewer fan I'm happy (although, as mentioned above, I have a feeling the Cardinals will somehow find a way to do just fine without him).

As a fantasy baseball fan I'm frustrated. As he was a nice cheap pitcher that I have on my roster in my keeper league!

My student employee who is a Cardinals fan (and not coincidentally, my lesson in tolerance for this school year) is pretty bummed today.
Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Hate to see a young player (any player, really) getting hurt

That said the PECOTA projection of 76 wins for the Cardinals looks a little more credible today

Also a possible spot to send off Garza.

Let me put it this way: I'd rather trade Garza for something of value to help with the Brewer rebuild (even if in the division), then not deal Garza at all & suffer thru a year of poor performance (a la a repeat of 2015)...

Unless Garza has come up with another pitch this offseason I don't see any way he gets traded for anything of value. Salary dump at best, with better odds they give him the old yeller treatment like they did to Suppan.

If true, I may have to worry less about violating the cuss filter here. Still the Cardinals seem like they could have their team plane crash into a testosterone factory, and still win 85 games with a bunch of guys they signed from a local beer league.

Well he'll miss 2017, but not half of 2018. He's got 14months to recover by the 2018 OD. So maybe 1month of the 2018 sure, but beyond requires setbacks.

Will the Cardinals burn 1+ team control? They cant assign him as AAA 40man vs a 25man 60DL?

Asking for the 2 Ws, and Leake to improve isnt a big unlikely. Leake is the toughest, but Wacha seemed far too talented to see him falter again. Wainwright came back from injury in 2015? Or during 16? I would expect somewhat avg ERA vs not.

Here's where the Cardinals find a trade partner and get a real arm....Jose Q? Cubs fed them 1st round comps B2B seasons. May as well use one of those comps and get a trade done.

a player on the active roster cannot be sent to the minors. He'll be put on the 60-day DL and the Cards will hope for 2nd half 2018.
