I, Claudio

Lefty specialist presumably? They have a .498 OPS against him for his career

REgarding his contract, he will have 3 years of arbitration and be a FA in 2022. Projected by mlb trade rumors at 1.3M this year. Not a ton of payroll added for what appears to be an effective LH reliever.

In limited innings has decent numbers against LHBs.

2016 17 innings, .71 WHIP, .177 BA against, 2.65 ERA

2017 29 innings, .58 WHIP, .147 BA against, 2.78 ERA

2018 24 innings, 1.00 WHIP, .244 BA against, 3.38 ERA

Not good numbers against RHB

His statistical profile is very similar to Dan Jennings. I am totally fine and understand the move as it is nice to have on an MLB roster even though a comp balance pick is a bit much. I can't wait for the entire fanbase to fall in love with him.

This is pretty gross. Giving up a high draft pick and the associated bonus money for a guy that should only be facing at most two hitters at a time. Just sign someone like Luis Avilan and keep the pick.

MLBTR has him projected for $1.3mm in arbitration so not really any savings over Dan Jennings or Xavier Cedeno. Adam Mccalvy tweeted that Claudio has a minor league option remaining which helps for roster construction.

I'm not a huge fan of giving up the drat pick for him, but the deal makes sense for 2019.

I would be curious what his stats are against RH hitters on the road over his career. That stadium is such a launching pad, he could be more effective against RH hitters when not in that stadium.

My concern is guys seem to hit him around pretty good. Gives up a ton of hits for a reliever. 91 hits in 68 innings? Yikes. Doesn’t strike out many guys either. He doesn’t walk many guys and keeps the ball in the park though. I don’t like giving up the pick in this situation.

Claudio had 17 appearances in 2018 of 4 or more outs.

So if he can serve as a LOOGY + rubber arm kinda like Jennings was in 2018 that's useful. The minor league option is even better. He comes in to soak up a couple garbage time innings and then gets optioned for a couple weeks.

I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but I'd wager that hitting the ball out of the park to LF in Miller Park and LF in Arlington are not much different. Probably easier for someone to hit a HR to RF off of Claudio in Texas by a little bit but probably not a huge deal with righty hitters overall.

he had a ridiculously high BABIP last year

I hate giving up the pick, but for career #'s versus lefties, he's far better than Logan, Cedeno, or Jennings.

He's going to be a LOOGY only type who probably spends time between Milwaukee and San Antonio, rotating up when we face lefty heavy teams or a dangerous lefty like Harper or Rizzo.

And we gave up a draft pick and around $2 million of our bonus pool for this. Just wonderful.
