Game 11: Packers @ 49ers - Sunday, November 24th, 7:20PM

I feel like this game could have been different if they did not open it by fumbling at the 2. Came out flat and stayed flat. They had a similar showing the season opener against Seattle back in 2014, and it led everyone to thinking they couldn't hang with them. Of course they did hang with them, and then, well we all know the rest.

 

But the defense was playing well early on and getting good pressure, you just can't leave them on the field 85% of the first half.

We aren't an NFC title contender, folks. This game was the big reveal and this is what I feared. I was ok with a loss tonight as long as it was a competitive game and we looked like we belonged on the same field as the 49ers.

 

We don't.

 

I'll put us, at best, 4th in the NFC. I'll take any of the 49ers, Saints, or Seahawks against us in a playoff game, easily.

Don't congratulate me, Joey. You think I'm happy about it? This sucks ass. I thought there was a chance we were a Super Bowl contender. I was really excited about where this season was going tonight and this more or less extinguishes it.

 

But the 49ers are a better football team, and it's not particularly close. All I have to go by is what I'm seeing.

 

Fair enough. I'm going to maintain a positive outlook. The Packers all but have a playoff spot sewn up, and anything can happen once you get there. Games like tonight make it not look likely, but the 2010 team was written off a bunch of times, too.

 

Bummer of a night, but I'm not going to let it tarnish what's been a very good, fun season so far.

Minnesota has been putting up some nice offensive games all without Thielen for quite some time. That offense is light years ahead of ours. I tend to think the defense is better than ours too, the one weakness is Cousins can be pretty average at the wrong time.

 

I don't think SF is that much better though. Better, yeah they could be. But not 38-0 better. I think it's becoming clear though the Packers are not a big-play offense built for playing from behind.

The Packers front office and scouts need to figure out how to find some true playmakers and not just by using the draft. If we can’t build a great defense and special teams, then we need offensive firepower and we just don’t have it right now.

Good for you that you can maintain a positive outlook, and I don't mean that sarcastically. I just see too many holes. They just don't have the skill players on offense to be able to beat top defenses like the 49ers and Saints. They have probably the worst special teams unit I've ever seen as a Packer fan. All of that could perhaps be overcome if they had an elite defense, but they don't have one, not even close.

 

I see probably a 6-4 quality team that has won almost all close games against almost all average opponents.

 

They'll almost certainly be a playoff team, but I'm not expecting much. I can't buy into the 2010 comparisons. That team certainly was written off too as you said, but that team was in every single game it played all season long. They never had a game where they looked like they didn't belong.

I just don't see it with the Vikings. They've been ok, but other than that Lions game, no huge offensive explosions. They strike me as a one and done playoff team. Perhaps thats what the Packers are too, though.

Our schedule has been absolutely stacked with great opposing defenses. Minnesota has not had quite the gauntlet, so it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison. No question, though, I like their weapons better than ours. And, tonight notwithstanding, I like our o-line better, definitely in pass pro, but I’d be interested in seeing the run blocking comps.

They just don't have the skill players on offense to be able to beat top defenses like the 49ers and Saints. They have probably the worst special teams unit I've ever seen as a Packer fan. I think the positive outlook stems from the fact that even if they were 6-4 that would be an improvement over the absolute boredom that has been the last 2 seasons. Why would anyone expect the Packers to be a top 4 team this year? It was a bad team that signed three solid FA names (which is basically a typical offseason for any team not run by Ted Thompson) under a first-year coach.

 

I think the NFCCG is a ridiculous standard for calling this a successful season. It's successful if they go 10-6 and lose in the WC. It would be they overachieved in the first half and came back down to earth.

 

I think this team is a good comp with the 2009 team, developmentally. They're not good in the same areas, but they're an ascending team just not quite there yet.

Then I suggest perhaps enjoying this season for what it is. A team with a good record coming off two bad years, all with a rookie coach. Yeah the great record makes it tough to temper expectations, but it might be the best way to enjoy this team.

This is a nice drive, but I wish they'd move with a little bit more urgency. You should not be milking almost all of a 40 second play clock on every play when you're down 23 in the second half unless you're just trying to go home.

I can't tell you how much I hate that this team has no urgency in the huddle and getting up to the line of scrimmage. It is absolutely infuriating.
