the last time the brewers carried five catchers on the 40-man roster was in the 2017 offseason, after adding jacob nottingham to prevent him from becoming property of another team as a rule 6 player.

Feliciano was a must, but carrying that many ctachers and losing out on some guys we need to protect is iffy at best.

Bigger news is always who wasn't added. Someone has to help me out (please) as I have not been paying attention. Who were some of the more notable guys the Brewers did not place on the 40-man roster?

This is one of those points where it really sucks that there wasn't any minor league games last year (note that I am NOT saying there should have been MiLB games played last year).

P. Henry, QTC, Z.Brown, Francis, Webb, Hummel, Spanberger

I think it is unlikely any of these players will be picked, though you never know.

players not added are still on minor league contracts and are rightfully discussed in the minor league forum.

Agreed...that's half the fun of the Baseball season. Following the farm system.

This whole process is going to be interesting. Projecting which guys who haven't played past LowA in some cases could translate to the big league team.

Even though I doubt he gets picked, I don't understand keeping Freitas on the 40-man over Henry.

agreed.

He sucks, and we don't need that many catchers on the 40 man...

I’m guessing that the reason we have, at the moment, so many Catchers on the 40 man is that we intend to trade one or a few of them. Since selling low on Narvaez makes little sense, I think Pina will be part of a trade.

This says a lot about who they value.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe File cranked up his velocity in the spring this year. I want to say it was via the pitching lab. I’m going off memory but I read an article on File in March.

Regardless of stats, Supak wasn’t highly valued. But File and Bettinger seem to be.

These were the three I thought were best in the MiLB thread. Feliciano and File would get picked, Bettinger was possible. None of the others are getting picked, other than an outside shot someone takes a chance on QTC.

File also breezed through AA, making a couple of strong starts in the playoffs the last we saw of him. He was probably penciled in to start in AAA for 2020. A good chance we see him up at some point next season.

I’d rather see them DFA Narvaez than Piña. At least Manny is a plus defensively, and Narvaez is more expensive.

It's hard to completely overlook what Freitas did the last time he saw any regular playing time which was 2019 when in 85 games at San Antonio he posted a 1.030 OPS. He also raked at AAA in 2018. His MLB chances have been all limited here and there and he's struggled. With the Brewers so short of bats, I get keeping him around for a while.

Maybe. but DFA appears to be the more likely.

Over the last two seasons Pina has played only 91 games due to injury but accumulated 1.7 fWAR/1.3 bWAR over that time.

Unless there are lingering injury concerns, that's not someone I would DFA.
