Your 2022 Carolina Mudcats

Brewer Fanatic Editor
Posted

We will begin to see some formal minor league roster announcements soon. The Carolina formal announcement will come directly from the Mudcats, not the Brewers. All four minor league affiliates will likely send out their press releases within an hour or so of each other once the Brewers have given them the official go-ahead to do so.

Mudcats' Opening Night is Friday 4/8!

Feel free to link to any formal notices you see here.

Often we learn via farmhand tweets, who has been assigned where, prior to the formal affiliate announcements. We'll link to any of those posts in this thread as they come out.

As you might know, we use the "Your 2022" team threads to post and link to feature stories, including audio and video, that are outside the scope of game activity covered in the Daily Minor League Link Report.

These threads have become among the most popular for viewing here, and we look forward to kicking them off formally.

Please do not speculate on any player releases. Brewers Player Development or MiLB.com will update us formally.

Note: James Meeker probably should not have been included in this list.

As expected, Carolina has updated the link to exclude RHP James Meeker, who's starting the season at High-A Wisconsin.

CheeseheadInQC pointed out in another thread that it's somewhat surprising not to see RHP Lun Zhao, RHP Brailin Rodriguez or LHP Jakob Brustoski make the roster. I'll add that I'm surprised not to see IF Daniel Castillo, who had 72 PAs in Carolina last season and saw action in several minor league spring training games over the past 2 weeks.

Finally, by correcting for the Meeker error and still keeping Luis Silva listed as a catcher, this likely means that it's a serious endeavor to convert Silva from a third baseman (531 career minor league innings) to a catcher (2 career innings - at DSL in 2018). There's always something unexpected happening, as Lucas Erceg showed us last year.

FanGraphs apparently likes what they’ve seen from Edwin Jimenez this spring, adding him at #28 on their Brewers list with a 35+ FV & this report…

Jimenez currently sits 87-91 but his curveball has real shape and power, and he can create distinct action on his changeup. A relatively polished strike-thrower, Jimenez has a starter's repertoire and command foundation as well as a fairly projectable frame that allows for more strength and velocity at maturity. He projects as a developmental no. 4/5 starter.”

For a team whose pitching staff I believe might have tallied a total of three points in the prospect poll that just ended (and that only because I like trying to predict pitching breakouts) the group of Cornielle, Figueroa, Jimenez, Puello, Rodriguez and Segura make this staff very interesting even if it could also be rocky at times.

Yeah, obviously the hitters are going to get most of the headlines, but there are some low key intriguing arms on the staff too & I was excited to see how many of the standout complex performers got the Carolina call.

Should be a real fun follow on the Link Report this summer.

So, what will happen with Zhao, Rodriguez, Brustoski, and Castillo? Do they stay in Arizona?

Yes, they will stay in Arizona regardless of whether it is an injury or simply because they are starting the season with an Arizona club.  However, Jakob Brustoski is in fact on the opening day roster for Carolina.  He will fill the void of the invisible James Meeker that was mistakenly a part of the official roster announcement.

Nicely produced, this is an extended split discussion interview with Carolina second baseman Zack Raabe and his dad Brian Raabe (Baseball Reference), who played in 17 big league games with three organziations, and you don't do that without a distinguished minor league career of one's own.
