After yesterday's rainout, Carolina remains down 2-0 in their series in Columbia. Tonight's lineup is the same as yesterday's, except that SS Eduardo Garcia is back in the starting 9. RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez gets the start:

Wisconsin's lost 2 games in a row in Great Lakes, so needs a win today to even up this week's series 2-2. Reliable RHP Justin Jarvis (4.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 9.4 K/9 in 58 2/3 innings) gets the start tonight. 2021 33rd overall pick, 2B Tyler Black is putting together a 3rd straight solid month (.894 OPS in 190 plate appearances this season):

Biloxi aims for a win tonight to take a 3-1 series lead in Chattanooga. LHP Nick Bennett (5.36 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 7.2 K/9 in 48 2/3 AA innings) will make his 11th start of 2022. C Pedro Severino will make his Brewers' organizational debut, as he works back into game shape after a suspension:

AAA Nashville needs a win tonight to avoid falling behind 3-1 in their series in Memphis. Starting RHP Caleb Boushley (3.20 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 6.4 K/9 in 64 2/3 innings this year) has won his last 4 starts. 3B Pablo Reyes has hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games:

Nashville has some good outfielders.  But it is difficult to understand why Garrett Whitley sits more often than he plays.  He seems to be on the bench for 2 consecutive games after each game played.  He is out tonight for the second night in  a row after hitting the tying HR on Wednesday, as well as having the only other RBI in regulation in a game that was tied 2-2 after 9 and that the Sounds won in the 10th.  He's a very good fielder and his OPS is .800. Why isn't he playing more?

Garcia with a HR/1B, Chourio a 2B/BB, Quero staying hot 3-4, Mendez a pair of hits and Carlos Rodriguez 5 IP | 0 R | 2 H | 2 BB | 1 K.

Carolina leads 4-1 top of 7th.

Wisco loses 3-0 with Peters & Clarke saving the TRats from being no hit.

Pretty impressive looking outing for Jarvis though, 6 IP | 2 R | 2 H | 3 BB | 11 K.

Biloxi wins 6-5 with Dillard (two doubles), Devanny (2-5 with a 2B), Holt (3-4) and Coca (2-3, with a 2B/BB) doing most of the damage.

Pretty solid pitching all around with 4 of 5 runs unearned and both Contreras & Vennaro striking out a pair each out of the pen while Bennet went 5 IP | 1 R | 5 H | 2 BB | 6 K to start things off.

Nashville wins 4-1. Davis (2-4, 2B), Turang (2-4, BB) and a Wes Wilson HR accounted for most of the action while Dahl & Feliciano both added a 1B/BB each to their season tallies as well.

Boushley went 6 IP | 1 R | 3 H | 3 BB | 4 K to start things off with Hardy, Gustave & Zack Brown recording a scoreless frame of relief each.

Any of the DSL players who finish the season with so-so stats need only look to Alexander Perez and Luis Castillo for inspiration. Castillo has been absurdly hot so far and Perez is hitting well too and is entrenched atop his team's batting order. Their OPS's last year in the DSL? Between .600 and .630.

I'll try to help out with some ACL game summaries:

ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE

Final: ACL Athletics 7, ACL Brewers Blue 5
Box Score / Game Log

Brewers Blue vs. Athletics was a repeat of Thursday’s game, with unfortunately the same outcome, dropping the Blue squad to 1-8 thus far in 2022.

Five DSL players were promoted stateside in advance of today’s ACL games, but only Jamal Zalm saw action. After playing all of his 246 2/3 innings in the infield in DSL, of course in his first-ever ACL game Zalm was sent to play left field. It was a successful debut for him, as he doubled and scored to tie the game 2-2 in the second inning, while the gods mercifully didn’t send any fly balls his way.

However, the Athletics used a 4-run fourth inning to blow open the 2-2 contest, then held off the Brewers Blue squad in this shortened 7-inning affair.

After a solid debut 2021 season for 24-year old LHP Leoni De La Cruz (1.23 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 12.0 K/9 in 29 1/3 innings split between DSL and ACL), he struggled for the 2nd time in 3 games this year. Inheriting a 2-on, 1-out situation from starting RHP Andy Garcia in the fourth inning, De La Cruz allowed the first 3 Athletics he faced to reached base (single, 2 walks), thus ballooning the deficit from 3-2 to 6-2.

2021 big bonus 18-year old Venezuelan SS Daniel Guilarte (.786 OPS in 35 plate appearances, 7 RBIs) continues his successful debut season, with his fifth inning, 2-out single plating two runs to cut the Athletics’ lead to 6-4.

The Brewers Blue and Athletic staffs struck out 9 and 10 batters, respectively, but the Blue team issued 7 walks versus just 1 issued by the Athletics. However, those strikeouts are likely an encouraging sign that our pitchers have the “good stuff” (5 for Garcia in 3 1/3 innings, 2 for De La Cruz in 1 2/3 innings, 2 for Raul Mendoza in 2 innings).

The organization can’t reasonably expect 17-year catcher Felipe Valderrama to hit much at this level (unsurprising .414 OPS in 25 plate appearances), so should be happy that he threw out 1 of 2 attempted base stealers.

Don’t be discouraged by 1B Quinton Low’s OPS of .425 (25 plate appearances), as his BABIP is just .182 and his BB/K ratio is 6/8.

Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Guardians 0
Box Score / Game Log

The Gold squad continues to counter-balance Blue’s struggles, boosting their record to 7-2 in this reversal of fortune from Thursday’s loss to the same Guardians’ team.

What a turnaround for 19-year old starting RHP Patricio Aquino from last week’s rough stateside debut, as he shut out the quality opposition (Guardians drop to 6-3) over 6 innings, striking out 8 batters while only allowing a double, 2 singles and 2 walks. After a solid 2021 season (2.66 ERA in 44 DSL innings), Aquino is definitely a player to keep an eye on.

The Gold team were unfortunately unable to capitalise on a bases loaded, 1-out opportunity in the first inning, while Aquino then worked around a leadoff Guardians’ double in the second inning (2 strikeouts and an infield pop up).

We’re 9 games into 2022 and we now simply expect greatness from 18-year old left-handed hitting OF Luis Castillo who went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs to maintain his amazing OPS at 1.382 through 38 plate appearances. His RBI single in the third inning opened the scoring at 1-0, while his 2-run double in the fourth inning provided the final margin of 5-0.

Of course, Castillo’s BABIP (.519) and low season numbers for walks (3) and stolen bases (0) will raise some questions, but by the same token just 6 strikeouts tells you that Mr. Castillo has serious contact skills.

18-year old lead-off man 2B Jadher Areinamo continued his impressive work (1-for-4, 2 runs scored). Areinamo (.297 AVG / .395 OBP / .405 SLG in 43 ACL plate appearances) has hit safely in 8 of the 9 ACL games, walking twice in the other one.

19-year old Venezuelan RHP Yorman Galindez was the only 2022 international signee to be directly posted stateside (i.e. no games in the DSL) and the organization is not regretting that choice. With 2 scoreless innings in this contest, his ERA is now 1.04, WHIP 0.81 and he’s struck out 12 batters in his 8 2/3 innings. Well done, young man!

To finish off the shutout, 24-year old RHP Ryan Middendorf had a successful debut in affiliated baseball, working around an infield error to pitch an otherwise clean ninth inning with 1 strikeout. The Brewers acquired Middendorf’s contract from the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League earlier this week, where he threw 150 2/3 innings in 24 starts in 1 1/4 seasons (3.05 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 7.8 K/9).

19-year old Jesus Parra continued his bounce back season (.774 OPS in 2019 DSL, .566 OPS in 2021 ACL, .840 OPS this year) with a 2-for-5 outing.

I’m not sure if it was the 107-degree heat (on a partly cloudy day, no less), the Guardians’ struggles at the plate (despite 20mph winds blowing out to center field) or their three errors, but bench coach Dennis Malave was ejected by the home plate umpire Chad Lagana in the 8th inning. Get both of those men a cold beverage. Actually, this occurred after the Guardians bunted for the 2nd out with 1 runner on in the 8th inning. Bunting in ACL ball while down 5-0? Yeah, that might merit an ejection.
