Wow!  I did not see that one coming.

Looking forward to some follow up on this story.

I imagine that Fernandez is coming back. I believe Ward was going to be a minor league free agent at year’s end, which meant there was no guarantee he would be back next year anyway.

Exactly this, similar to Tristen Lutz with Biloxi recently. The new 180 player stateside limit means someone is going to go each time someone has to be activated from the 60-day IL, etc.

To kick off this report, we provide our usual effort in acknowledging those released, and particularly in this case, OF Je'Von Ward. Good luck in the future, Je'Von, pretty sure we'll see you elsewhere on a diamond in 2024.

  • RHP Brannon Jordan released by High-A Wisconsin

I'm really surprised by this, as there's nothing in Jordan's numbers or career path which suggested to me that his journey with the Brewers could end anytime soon. Wasn't bad as a starter, then transitioned to relief work. K numbers, ERA and WHIP look solid. Dominated in Australian ball last winter. Gets saves from time to time, indicative of being trusted as a higher leverage reliever. Four years remaining on minor league contract after being drafted in 9th round in 2021.

Perhaps something about his recent injury (out July 19 through August 21) has triggered this.

Add this to the Michael Mediavilla, Leoni De La Cruz, Kent Hasler (etc.) mystery reliever release list.  All I’ve been told is his injury wasn’t too serious, at least not career-threatening, and he has been a great guy in the clubhouse.

It’s weird, There are I believe five minor league free agents among the high A and AA bullpens in the same situation Ward was. While on paper there might be a fair amount of competition for the double-A bullpen next season, there is a lot of time before next regular season starts.

Before the Smith and Shears call-ups, in the midst of the T-Rats ongoing first half woes, Jordan was manager Joe Ayrault's high-leverage guy. He was mostly very effective in this role. I'm as surprised as you are. Doesn't make all that much sense.

  • RHP Justin Yeager sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers

And the ACL Brewers also placed the following players on the temporarily inactive list, perhaps a requirement to limit the number of active players before tonight's playoff game:

  • RHP Samuel Dario
  • RHP Ryne Moore
  • RHP Darling Solano
  • INF Josh Adamsczewski
  • RHP Ryan Birchard
  • RHP/INF Alberis Ferrer
  • RHP Henrison Mota
  • C Felipe Valderrama
  • C Jesus Garcia

Around the All Star Break I did some random "What are these players up to?" mini-dives. I thought De La Cruz was with Gastonia in the Atlantic League. It turns out, he made the Frontier League All Star Game:

Quote

Leoni De La Cruz wraps up the Otters’ selections as a relief pitcher. He joined the Otters right before the 2023 season began after an appearance with the Gastonia Honey Hunters in the Atlantic League.

The Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic native has put together a 1.42 ERA in his 17 appearances thus far. He has 36 strikeouts in 19 innings of work.

(From HERE)

RHP Trevor Tietz was a late addition to the All Star roster. Ol Shuckers RHP Robbie Hitt and 2B Gabe Holt made the original All Star rosters.

Regardless, whereas Hasler and Garabitos (two of my faves) are still in 'Released' status realm in their respective lives (which obviously could be and is likely their personal choices given their immense talents), it was really nice to see some 2022 Brewers prospects still working hard on their crafts.

Please let's remember to keep all non-transaction discussion out of the Transaction Thread.

It's my fault, but I tried to split all the Joe Gray discourse from last night out of here, and somehow merged the entire "Your 2023 Timber Rattlers" thread with the Transaction Thread and am now going to spend the next two hours trying to reverse that.

Sigh...

- Signed LHP Fernando Abad and assigned to AAA Nashville

This may be an indication that the Brewers have no confidence in or intention of using Ethan Small as a LH reliever in an emergency

THAT is really cool to see. I haven't any updates on Yeager for a while. I thought he was likely having TJ.

Turns out MiLB made a technical faux pas, Doston was actually placed on the team's Development List. They will likely adjust on the Rattler roster page at some point.
