While the Padres have played themselves out of the playoff race, culminating in a sweep at the hands of the Brewers and the failure of Hader to even take the mound in his return to AmFam, William Contreras, who hit a 450 ft blast yesterday and was probably the MVP of the weekend, has been the best or second best catcher in baseball this year per fWAR....

We may have missed the playoffs last year, but the Hader trade has become nothing short of a resounding success and a boon to the future of this franchise. All of this with top 10 LHP prospect Robert Gasser having yet to make his MLB debut...

Hader will be earning lots of money next season but probably not in SD….meanwhile Brewers still have 4 years of control of Contreras…..and 6 of Gasser……..not to mention a bullpen that has been rebuilt nicely under Arnold.

But can they keep the manager who utilizes his players to the max?

Yeah, the threads can run long on  these type of trades. When the Padres get a draft pick following Hader’s rejection of a QO this offseason, they could conceivably draft the next Mickey Mantle and then the  pendulum would swing the other way again.

On the whole, Hader has delivered exactly what the Padres were expecting when they got him, the issue is the team didn’t win as much as the pundits  thought they should.

Did Hader’s exodus hurt the Brewers in ‘22?  Probably but folks can argue until  they’re blue in the face as to how much it hurt.

At the end of the day the Padres paid a fair price for a superstar reliever, that the Padres were a disappointment this year has no real bearing on whether it was a good or bad trade for San Diego.

The Brewers were never going to sign Hader to a long-term deal. That's just reality. Not only do they typically not invest huge dollars in the pen, they had a ready-made replacement in Devin Williams ready to go. And when Williams gets too expensive, they'll deal him and have a kid like Uribe ready to go.

Overall they've done good on a player who was was never going to be a long term asset.

In retrospect, here is what the trade machine says about this trade now. The only part of it that I can't add is Manny Piña as he has been DFA'd by the A's (which had negative value originally). Brewers = Actual A's. A's = Actual Braves. Braves = Actual Brewers (as they should be). I think the only thing that is valid is the sum of the current gets as the gives came from different teams.

I find it interesting that now the most valuable piece is Contreras...and Payamps (barely) has more value than Ruiz. Here is what values were at the time of the trade.
