MLB Trade Rumors collected a handy Brewers rumor roundup today, which is useful because while the Brewers have been their typically tight-lipped selves, there are still things to talk about.

  • The Brewers are looking at middle infielders, though the names are a little strange
  • Willy Adames and Brice Turang have underperformed offensively, which is driving the front office to pursue middle infield help
  • Matt Arnold mentioned that any middle infield help would prioritize and preserve run-prevention
  • Though no rumors are directly linked to Milwaukee, it's hard to envision them not acquiring a first base or DH bat
  • Because the Brewers prioritize and hold their prospects in such high regard, it's possible they deal from a position of surplus such as Victor Caratini

There's a lot to unpack here and many options open to the Brewers. What do you target first and why?

Caratini makes a lot of sense.  I wonder what he could fetch from the Yankees or a team in a similar predicament?  Could we pry a bullpen piece away for Caratini—someone in the .5 - 1 WAR range?

The Astros probably make more sense here.  Not sure on the return it is hard to figure out what Caratini would be worth.

How sad would Burnes be if we traded his personal catcher?

Ah, I keep forgetting about that wrinkle.  I’d hate him to take a Caratini trade as hard as he took the Hader one…

I haven't read anything so far that intrigues me. Biggest need is 1B/DH and there's not one clear target. Arnold is going to have to get creative but I suspect nothing gets done or some random bullpen arm which we don't even need.

We just traded for Carlos Santana?

I think the Brewers go after a reliever and one that fits their mold is Barlow from the Royals.  While he is not all that great this year he would be an improvement as the 4th or 5th option in the bullpen.  He also shouldn't cost all that much to acquire.

I think the quote there of not wanting to spare run prevention is huge.

Santana is a huge 1st upgrade, +6 runs. Rowdy can focus on DH when back.

My guess is Jeimer Candalario has to be our top target. He isn't a gold glover but has had a positive runs scored metric.

Jorge Polanco would be an interesting name for 2B. He is set to come off the IL any day and is a solid defense 2B who could be a big improvement offensively. The Twins have Julian playing really well at 2B and I am sure there is something we have in an arm that would be interesting to them. He also has 2 reasonable team options if he plays well the rest of the way.

I could be talked into a Polanco deal, price dependent, of course.  But it might mean the front office has become considerably bearish on Urias and Turang, unless one of those players was involved in the deal going the other way.  Maybe they still imagine Urias bouncing back and returning to a super-sub role, or playing more SS in Adames’ absence (I wouldn’t be thrilled about that idea from a run-prevention angle, however).

But if Polanco is right physically, he could certainly help us right now.
