why is UW ever throwing? they are getting 5 yards a pop on the ground

The team and program are not one bit better than they were when Fickel took over and they might be worse.

Completely disagree.  Skill position players are far better than what they have had in a long time.  Biggest problem is the Dline but the previous regime sucked at recruiting there also.

No...it's still early in his 2nd season, but...they don't look better.

It kinda feels like this program turned with Mertz. I just thought it'd be for the better and...it has not been.

I'm not blaming one kid, but...that's kinda when there was more excitement. They had Taylor, a really good run game, you thought a great QB would elevate them as Wilson nearly did and it's just been really mediocre since then.

I would agree there more athletic in the skilled positions but the coaching is so much worse as far as fundamentals and discipline that it pretty much offsets the improved athleticism.

Alabama didn't look a whole lot better, for the first three quarters at least.

South Florida rushed for over 200 yards against them, primarily from the QB.

I've seen this from time to time last year & saw it again yesterday in a 2nd half drive--it's as if we're suddenly reminded that there might be some QB or wideouts watching on TV that we're recruiting, so we better start throwing the ball again. Sometimes down & distance dictate it, sometimes not. Just odd.

I'm sure there are fans who think South Dakota, FCS team, & feel it's a failure if you don't win 45-7. Truth is, the top 20 or so FCS programs are pretty much on a par with a large # of the average-or-below FBS teams. So not a rousing success, but not an embarrassment. I'm just concerned about how un-physical this group is. Especially on defense, Save for Wohler & Hills.

'Bama, if we can be assignment sure, might be kept from running the ball at will, and if UW can force them into throwing more than they'd like, that's IMO the best chance we have to hang around. But their combination of quickness & physical play on defense leads me to believe we need to hope for some breakdowns to get scores. And we haven't shown much propensity, so far, to turn people over so I have trouble seeing where the points will come from.

Tressels defenses do not do lane discipline and physical play.

Most of the time the offensive line doesn't move our big guys up front.... they do it on their own.

And usually the linebackers are going the opposite direction.

Not just Alabama, but Penn State and Oregon also didn't look all that great during their games either.

I'm sure their fan message boards are freaking out, too.

I really don't like the use of 2 defensive lineman, I get that 2 olb's are like DE's but it seems light in the pants. I don't mind throwing a bit more the 1st 2 games because it's likely we won't be able to run as much vs. the better BIG Ten teams. It would be nice to see a little more creative with the offense find ways to get Trech the ball more. When it comes down to it I don't think Van Dyke makes quick enough decision for this offense to run correctly. Hopefully Locke or maybe Mettauer is ready to take over the reigns next year becuase this year feel like last year.

I still have faith in Fickell, the personal switch is huge and will take another year or two assuming we do fine recruiting and don't lose to many transfers. I still wish we could get Jim Leohard (broncos dbacks coach) back for the defense, I don't have alot of faith in that.

Pretty sure the only way you see JL back in Madison is if he has success in the NFL & Fickell is deemed a failed hire after another couple years. Even then, there's the question of his relationship with Macintosh & vice versa. So pretty slim.

I'd like to say the two DL look is a byproduct of a lack of depth there, but it isn't. I'll feel better about it if they can keep Alabama from gashing btwn the tackles on Saturday, but there won't be much keeping their O-Line from getting a hat on our LBs, and while there's some talent there ( I wonder if both Curtis & Alliegro will be ahead of Jake Chaney in a few weeks) I just don't see much ability to fight off blocks & be physical. This is what they're selling: speed, quickness, athletes on defense. OK, but if that doesn't result in a marked improvement in sacks, TFLs & turnovers I think it spells trouble.

I hope I'm wrong but this game looks like a bad matchup for smallish receivers like Kekahuna & Pauling.

Leonhard ran a lot of 2-4-5 as well, especially against 1-1 personnel.  Did well against the (literally) smaller schools, but got ran over against Ohio State.  I still think the only way to defend 1-1 personnel is a 4-2-5 with the DEs playing 7-tech or even 9-tech to contain the edge.

Witt is big enough to be an OLB in a 2-4-5, but he's about it.  And I think he even lost some weight going into this season.  (He did - was 258 last year and 247 this year.)

If the other team has a TE on the field, have to have 3 DL even if the TE is spread out (because they will motion him back into the line if the defense has 2 DL).

I get the impression they had high hopes for John Pius on the outside but so far that hasn't come to fruition. Witt certainly could be a factor if he can stay on the field.

ESPN Madison has reported that Tyler Van Dyke will miss the remainder of the season w/a "significant knee injury".

I hoped for the best but this isn't all that surprising. So you have Locke, who has a decent amount of experience from last year. But he isn't mobile or particularly big, and due to that sidearm-type delivery I suspect all opposing D-lineman will have a few days of 'get your hands up' drills when it's UW prep week. I think Mabrey Mettauer has a chance to be effective at some point, but this doesn't strike me as the type of system that's friendly to a QB who was at his HS prom four months ago. They would be well-served to find out exactly how much they can lean on the offensive line moving forward.

So just like the Packers (knee injury with an inexperienced backup), but for longer.

Any FA QBs in NCAA-land?  Can they transfer mid-season yet???

I'll be shocked if Bucky stays within 2 score at USC.

The line opened at -4.5 for USC?  Too bad I didn't see that.  I could see where it moved to -14.5 quickly.  Bucky loses by 28.
