So the advantage is what for each side in doing it this way?

For Contreras, it guarantees him more $ this season than what he would have gotten with a losing arby case, and also guarantees a nice pay bump aligning with what he would be valued at assuming another all star caliber 2025 season - if he gets hurt in May he's still guaranteed a 2026 salary based on his 2024 production.

For the Brewers it gives them cost certainty both this year and more importantly next, when other teams that might be looking to trade for him will now know exactly what his 2026 salary will be.

I think the Brewers were just looking to cap what his max salary could be in 2026.  $12M (doubling of this year's salary) is a healthy raise.  This way they can take the club option if he has a great year and know it wont cost them more than $12M. Or they decline the option, give him $100k, and then go back through the normal arby process (He's arby eligible through 2027).  Contreras essentially gets $100k for agreeing to that $12M cap. This seems like a pretty good deal for the Brewers.

Wouldn't 12M be a record for a catcher?

Seems more likely they'll just decline and go back to arbitration.

Either way, you have people on Twitter complaining about how the Brewers are "pinching pennies," here again like Burnes when...they're doing just the opposite. They're coming closer to Contreras number than the Brewers and they don't have to go through arbitration and talk about all the things he didn't do well enough. I'd guess his framing or defense would be on that list or...I don't know, it's not a big list, but that's how it goes.
