It seems three of our top eight starters (Hall, Ashby, & now Myers) have all been sidelined this Spring with similar oblique injuries. This seems odd to me. Historically, has this been a problem with our pitching staff? Are other teams dealing with similar oblique issues?

Oblique injuries seem common to all teams. There is a lot of rotational force for hitting and pitching. Players strength train their legs to a much higher level than ever before and it seems that abdominal/core/oblique muscles have a hard time keeping up with the force being generated by legs. I am not a doctor, though.

Quick search of current oblique injuries from this week:

Sean Manaea (NYM) link

Jeff McNeil (NYM) link

Tyler Stephenson (CIN) link

Jesus Sanchez (MIA) link

Why are oblique strains so common? Link

When I heard about all of them my first thought was just thankfully not arm or shoulder injury. I think oblique is 1 to 2 months and then low risk after that?

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Weren't oblique strains the bane of Braun's existence for a few seasons?

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I’m willing to bet our pitching lab does a good job minimizing elbow and shoulder strain but at the expense of obliques.

If that was the case it should have shown up before now.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.
