Seriously, looking forward to your answer...

Whichever one started the game. If it was Frelick then let Frelick hit. If it was Vaughn then let Vaughn hit. Neither are good enough to justify the pinch hit tax to hit for the other one.

You’re conjuring up a hypothetical that isn’t even relevant to my original point, so no I’m not going to answer.

The fact remains that Vaughn and Frelick vs RHP are virtually indistinguishable to this point in the season by the surface level stats and metrics. There is no getting around that.

...and you are just avoiding the question.

Totally relevant, you are saying they are the same player offensively.

So if given the choice, who do you send to the plate in that scenario?

You don't want to answer because it makes you take a stance one way or the other, and could disprove your point,

Game on the line, bases loaded, down by 3, right handed pitcher, 2 outs, who would you want hitting, Frelick or Vaughn?  It's a simple little question really.

I'm not saying it's a pinch hit situation, I'm saying who do you want at the plate?

It's really a very simple question...

And I'm saying whichever one was starting the game. Against RHP they are basically the same level hitter. There's no obvious answer and anyone saying there is just isn't being truthful.

Rom isn't really a long guy. He's only gone more than 6 outs one time this year and has never thrown more than 38 pitches.

I also just don't really know who is being optioned. Gasser doesn't make sense with the big 18 in 17 coming up starting on Friday because you're going to need length. If it's not Gasser then Rom or Yoho would be the obvious answers but if either of them are going down, why weren't they used today?

Good question. The whole Rom up, then Rom sitting down thing was odd. Thought I saw Kuhnel up, too.

If they need a long man I do think Rom will be used. Apparently it would have to be in tandem (he used to start, but I wasn't aware it's been so long since he was extended), but I wouldn't be surprised if they extended him past 38 if need be.

I think the long outings by Patrick are somewhat designed to keep him stretched out. I think they want to preserve the ability to start him or ask him for 4-5 innings in the middle of a game rather than just treat him like their other relievers.

Could very well be the case. But you'd think they'd want him available to do just that in the upcoming series if need be. Now, he's down until Wednesday at the very earliest.

Personally, I love his BP work & what he can get done in 2-3 innings of max effort in a close game as opposed to pacing himself. It's why I'm rooting for guys like Woodruff, Crow, Henderson et al to allow the team to keep him there.

looking at the BP for Cincy, Rom must be sticking around & is the long man for Woodruff if needed, or for Tuesday. If you need a long man both days, I guess you also use some combination of Anderson/Kuhnel/Yoho with one of the latter two not being here due to Woodruff being activated. Otherwise holding Rom back today makes no sense. Get through the next two and maybe Koenig gets added by Wednesday?

Does any of this justify using Patrick for three innings today? No.

We won the game. I may be old fashioned, but that's still important to me.

Patrick came in and worked three against a very good Atlanta squad. The rest of our pen is rested.

I disagree, but since Brewcrew82 won't answer a simple question, I'm out.
