It doesn't sound like you and @adambr2are really saying anything that much differently.

He's saying he'd trade him for a premier, elite... maybe historic closer(and I do think a reliever is a big need for this team) but not for a lower level player.

That's not unreasonable. I've seen people(not on here, the... brilliant minds on X who wanted the Brewers to trade for and then "just sign Skubal to a 2 year extension,") who would trade Made for Skubal.

And again, the expectations have gotten SO ridiculous, so out of hand with these young guys, part of it they're doing to themselves.

This wasn't directed at him personally. Just the people cooling off on him in general.

What makes you think WE passed on him? Not giving up Pena? The Jays gave up a VERY talented and hyper athletic young SS.
We'd have had to give up Pena to match that.

And his FB velo stabilized in July and he's been better as of late than Detmers.

So if you think this is why we passed on Soriano(on top of all the other reasons he's a better fit) I'd imagine we'd "pass" on Detmers as well.

OK maybe we didn't "pass" on him. I don't know for sure but we didn't trade for him and the graph shows why that is a plausible route to take.

Ehh, is what it is. If they don't make those deals, I still get to cheer on the team with the best record in the majors tonight.

But yes, I'd be very surprised if the Brewers don't take steps to try to improve before 5 p.m. tonight. I don't understand why some of you are already calling this trade deadline a failure when we still have 7+ hours to go.

Not calling it a failure. Just don't see them getting a surprise bat not mentioned on the market.

The Brewers have a habit of making deadline moves that are kind of out of left field. I just think that odd move will be for a bat this year. No idea who.

The thing about our lineup is that it’s not top heavy, but it’s not bottom heavy either. It’s a lineup that you could argue the leadoff man should bat #9 and the #9 man should bat leadoff on almost any particular day. Would anyone really bat an eye for instance if Pratt hit #2 in the next game?

Even the 3B platoon that is our supposed weak point of Hamilton and Ortiz has combined for 2.1 WAR this year. That’s a solid player. So if you do make a move - who are you taking ABs away from? Unless  it’s a huge needle moving bat, you are pretty much making moves at the margins. Are we really that confident that Kyle Stowers for example is going to be any better than our existing options?

I think we could have made a deal around Jett Williams. We wouldn’t have necessarily had to give up Pena.

I’d happily move Jett Williams but for all we know he isn’t really moving the needle much for GM’s around the league.

Dang. That’s a very beatable package.

I would've thought so too. Even Skubal didn't have a high price relative to what many projected.

To be fair, on Skubal, it’s plausible many teams didn’t try to sell the farm to still be 10 pegs beneath the Dodgers. Easier for the Dodgers to pay up to the be even higher above everyone else.

Yes. They also like to buy low on guys — which doesn’t always pan out but which totally confounds people whose whole instinct is to go get guys who are putting up great numbers right now.

I don't think that graph tells you much of anything to be honest.

If you go off the last 7 starts, he was throwing well and his velo was fine. He was throwing his sinker more.

He was throwing the 4 seamer 99 last start and he was throwing his sinker just under 99 at 98.9 and his ERA had been trending back in the right direction.

I would guess given his profile, the sinker that is good, a splitter, the "splinker" that's been better this year and getting more movement on, very good slider and a knuckle curve all above average to REALLY good pitches, I'm guessing they just simply didn't want to give up Pena for him and the Jays were willing to offer a top 50 Shortstop prospect who is in AA.

Or the Angels may have preferred Nimmala... and then Mitchell is like a Jayden Dubanewicz/Bishop Letson.... in that he was a highly touted HS arm who they went and gave 3rd rd money to last  And then a 19-year-old arm who kinda sound like a Freddy Peralta type arm(a lottery ticket).

Obviously I could be wrong, but there aren't many pitchers in my opinion who fit exactly what the Brewers are looking for better than Soriano. Strikeouts, Groundballs and he's got some warts that they could fit and help him take another step.

I guess not I'm looking at Clay Holmes. He seems like a nice alternative and a high leverage reliever.

If the price for Soriano was Pena+, wow.  Bullet dodged.  Yikes.

I loved Soriano, but maybe.

That kid is so talented and it's so easy to picture him just sliding in for Turang in a couple years(maybe after playing utility for a year) and handling 2B at very high level.

I have seen the Pena and Made were just off limits.

I said in another thread(which I articulated poorly) that I think the Brewers system is almost going to hurt them. They have so much depth teams are going to want the top guys or the 2nd guy, another top ~20 guy and then a 30-40 guy.

Thing is, most guys in our 15-30 range are top 10-12 in every other system.

*I've also seen people suggest that Frias could be a "throw in." To some extent, we've become a victim of our own success with our IFAs.

Seems selling teams are mostly chasing pitching in these trades.  We aren't willing to trade five or six years of the pitchers who are having MLB success on the chance a veteran will be a slight upgrade, and even though we're beyond loaded with position talent our pitching prospects have been largely disappointing so far this year.
