Ohtani, Snell and Glasnow aren’t even pitching right now

Tyler Glasnow allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings in his rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday.

Glasnow allowed one hit and no hard-hit balls with his fastball at 94-98 mph in the 47-pitch outing tonight. He’s due for at least one and probably two more rehab starts as he makes his return from a back injury.

No argument here. Never should have given an inexperienced coach the job.

The Brewers probably had no business winning this series so I'll definitely take it before a tough road trip. Looking forward to seeing what the plan is for the left side of the infield if Ortiz is out for an extended time.

Vogelbach is an assistant hitting coach. Not the head hitting coach.

OK, this makes even less sense.

Eric Theisen was promoted to lead hitting coach for the 2026 season after working his way up through the Brewers organization. He previously served as the Triple-A Nashville Sounds hitting coach in 2024 and as the MLB assistant hitting coach in 2025. Theisen has no MLB playing experience and was a pitcher at Illinois State before coaching at D2 Hillsdale College.

That all makes sense and my assumption as well, I just am wondering where/if the rule is in writing.

I don’t think you’re going to find anything specifically addressing something that bizarre.

A theoretically possible (though extremely unlikely) scenario could involve something like.a long fly ball on which the runner on second stays close to the base to tag up, but the runner on first goes most of the way to second.

When the ball isn’t caught, both runners take off and the trailing runner is right behind the lead runner. They both round third and head home. The throw comes in and the catcher swipes to tag the lead runner. While he’s doing that the trail runner continues to the plate and isn’t tagged. The lead runner is called safe so the umpire doesn’t make a call on the trailing runner.

If the defensive team challenges and the lead runner is called out, I would think the trailing runner would still score. I don’t think the game “automatically pauses” with the first call. The general principle that the runners are placed where they would have been if the correct call had been made should apply.

If you ever see a play like that in a game ending situation, let me know how it came out,

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

This was the exact scenario I was going to present if pressed. I can't imagine it has verbiage in a rulebook somewhere ... but I was watching the final play tonight and the thought definitely crossed my mind that if you are Mitchell and no one is paying attention to you that you should be hauling around 3rd with reasonable intent to make the umpire make a judgment call in the unlikely scenario... because the above hypothetical would seem to be a judgment call.

One thing is watching the YouTube channel CloseCallSports is that MLB is really bad at getting all their rules in the rule book and it has really been bad recently where memos take the place of actual fully written rules.

They already called up two dudes who play regularly.

And both Shewmake & Bae are the type of guys most teams have on their AAA rosters who often are called on in case of injury. They just didn't happen to be in the Brewer organization when plucked.

This is inevitable in all sports.

It also happens outside of sports with respect to statutes passed by a legislature,  regulations adopted by regulatory agencies charged with enforcing the statutes, and interpretations issued by those agencies to address specific situations. Eventually a court might have to resolve a dispute over a specific situation.

Anyone who has played golf at any competitive level would be familiar with this. The Rules of Golf are pretty specific, but there is also a much larger “Decisions on the Rules of Golf” that addresses specific situations that have come up.

The hypothetical situation we’re talking about here is one of those unusual situations that is only going to be dealt with when it comes up. A perfect example of this is the “backward steal” situation that came up in a Brewers game a few years ago. Common sense should have told the umpires that a runner who starts a play on second base shouldn’t be able to retreat to first on a rundown on a subsequent play. But it took a ruling from the league office a few days later to clarify that that shouldn’t have been allowed.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

The downside to the trailing runner charging to the plate is that if he is noticed he could be tagged out, and then if the original safe call on the leading runner is reversed you would have completely run yourself out of the inning.

I wouldn’t be telling my runners that if they anticipate a close play at the plate with less than two outs in a game ending situation they should keep running just in case. The catcher who just made the  first tag is right there to tag that runner too.

100% agree and it is such a insane scenario I would be shocked if it ever does come into play.

Last night the shortstop was in shallow left, the 3rd baseman came all the way in to be the cut guy, so Mitchell had no one near him at 3rd so I think he had some space to turn aggressively had he been thinking about it. The read then is the catcher and how he responds to the play and are you even close enough at that point to be considered "committed"?

I know it is all so unlikely... but I thought about it in real time and wondered if anyone knew of an existing ruling.

Totally forgot he was a starter back in the pitcher hitting days - good call. Beyond him and May, do any other Brewers pitchers have any MLB plate appearances?

All 3 of these starters are types that can shut down the Brewers with relative ease.   Somehow, someway the Brewers are 30 games over .500 with an offense that has become very uneven over the past month.   These pitchers have the stuff to shut the Brewers down.   That is why I am concerned.

The best part, which was not seen on TV, was when he very subtly urged the fans to get loud when he was walking back to his position.  Nothing demonstrative, but it was on the scoreboard.  The crowd got very loud.

That young man has a distinctive charisma. It’s really interesting to watch him grow up in public. He strikes me as a very smart, disciplined player who hasn’t figured out how to deal with frustration. He’s been taking some hacks that I don’t think he would’ve taken when he first came up, digging himself deeper into his slump. But he seems to feel at home in the outfield. He knows he’s already a star out there.
