That isn’t cherry picking a stat. It is using one that is irrelevant as it relates to the current state of the offense.

Ok so if in April and May they have one of the best offenses in baseball and June and July they have one of the worst in baseball you can probably assume that the true offense is somewhere in the middle

Hot and cold streaks happen all the time in baseball but currently in terms of averages the Brewers are a top 10 offense in the MLB and probably somewhere near Top 5

Of course the last two months have been a dramatically different story, but there are some people who don’t want to talk about it or recognize it.
Jake McKibbin’s recent story discusses it in detail and the usual suspects haven’t objected to that.

And your point? In terms of averages the Brewers have a top 5-top 10 offense in the game unless you think Contreras is suddenly a .600 OPS player, or Mitchell sucks etc then at some point offense will turn back around from where it is now

I was speaking metaphorically.

I get that, my point is that some people on here have a hard time accepting that some poeople might be having a hard time accepting the reality that the whole world doesn't think the way they do.  If you don't like the posters that do not agree with your perspective, ignore them.  Don't spend the majority of your time trying to stick your finger in thier eye.  That is an equally bad look.

Disgree.  Horrible comparison.  I have two kids that very, very different.  One of my kids is very much like me, the other is very different and I do struggle understanding their thought process.  Netiher is a favorite, its just who they are.  I don't spend time trying to cancel one of them.  I spend my time considering their perspecitve and unerstanding that not everyone has to have the same perspective that I do.  I certainly don't spend 50% of my time correcting their perspective.

Nobody is trying to cancel anyone. If positivity bothers you, maybe the IGTs are not for you.

Never once said positivity bothered me.  Never once said negativity bothers me.  I accept both view points as valid.  There is plenty of cancel culture evidence.  The majority of the "negative" snarky comments come from those that would consider themselves positive.  Several posters on here believe themselves to the champions of positivity and spend the bulk of game threads countering preceived "negative" posts while others believe negative posts "deserve" to be derieded.  Its all there.

Ah, gotcha. I think we are talking about two different things.

I am talking about an initial comment and you are talking about the response to a comment.

I completely understand that hot and cold streaks happen.

But I also understand that the personnel on teams changes as the season moves along.  The lineups that the Brewers were using in April are significantly different than the ones they are using now...

The Brewers cold streak over the last 2 months has been a doozy, with their RPG of 4.37 being 12th best (or 4th worst depending on your preference) in the NL

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

So the Brewers should bench Chourio, Vaughn, and Yelich because the offense scored more runs when they were on the IL?

That certainly wouldn’t be my recommendation, but maybe the people who think only the full season numbers are a fair reflection of the current team would like that.

Seems to me you pretty heavily implied you can’t look at full season numbers because personnel has changed. You have been very clear you think the offense is worse then it was to start the year so it seems to me you’re saying Brandon Lockridge, Sal Frelick, and Luis Rengifo are better than Jackson Chourio, Andrew Vaughn, Cooper Pratt, and Luis Lara.

 No, that does not follow.

It is simply a fact that the Brewers in March and April scored more runs per game than they have scored for the rest of the season since then. If you want to look a little deeper, you might find that the high runs per game during that month was significantly affected by four very high scoring games. But when I bring that up, I get accused of cherry picking.

My approach is to look at the whole picture to reach an opinion. Sometimes one number doesn’t tell the whole story..

It would be great if the Brewers for the rest of the season would score close to five runs a game. But, they haven’t shown any signs recently of breaking out of the current slump. They have been even worse since the beginning of August than they were from the middle of June through the end of July

Maybe they are due for an explosion of 80 or so runs like they had the first 10 games in June, preferably when they play the Cubs

You’ve literally admitted that is not what you do. You take smaller fragments of time that fit your preconceived opinion and ignore the whole picture. If you were looking at the whole picture you wouldn’t be picking and choosing dates from which the “real offense has showed up”

I think the real irony is the Brewers have actually hit better in the sample you use as evidence they aren’t a good offense compared to when you think they were a good offense.

Before the Colorado/Vegas road trip - 98 wRC+, .313 xwOBA

After the Colorado/Vegas road trip - 102 wRC+, .323 xwOBA

The offense slumped with RISP from mid June to the end of July and have slumped entirely in August but they still have hit better with better underlying numbers during the same you say the offense has been bad.

You are really torturing something fairly simple and straightforward. When I talk about looking at the whole picture, I am talking about not just taking the surface level number as the end of the discussion.

I freely admit that I am looking only at runs scored as a measure of the value of the offense. If wORC+ says that the offense was basically average both before and after the Vegas trip that would also suggest that the offense is not top 5 in MLB.

If you haven’t done it already, I would suggest that you read that Jake McKibbin article. He seems to think that the offense has not been great for the last 2 months and that that might raise concerns for the rest of the season.

If you think the offense is just fine and is just in a little slump, that’s fine.

Do you think Yelich and Contreras are a .175 type hitter?

That’s a different question, and the answer may be different for each of them.

I hope that the Brewers aren’t counting  on a big bounce back from Yelich to lead them the rest of the way.

I really don’t want to continue this discussion on this thread and while games are going on.

Maybe we can pick it up on the more generic thread about assessing the offense. where everyone can continue to try to convince me that the Brewers offense is just fine and will soon return to scoring at a pace of 5 runs per game.
