A lot of the time it’s people using hindsight to criticize the trade so sometimes that’s unfair.   But clearly a lot of people were first guessing this.   There are a lot of factors that happened in this trade.   And now you add in the hindsight of how bad the performance was.   It was a terrible trade

Nope. Also, not what I said. You're allowed to have any opinion you want. But, at some point, every appearance by these guys can't be a referendum on the trade. It's done. Your disagreement is philosophical and may or may not end up bearing out. You've stated your position, and weaponizing it every time results from Romero and May go a certain way isn't all that useful, and I say that as someone who completely understands disliking the trade. It's just not something worth litigating until we have enough information to actually litigate it.

It's sort of like trading stock in an up-and-coming burger restaurant for stock in a mid-tier, established chain restaurant. Evaluating your trade every time the chain moves up or down is kind of a silly way to do business. Once we end the season, we'll at least know the Romero/May half, and, at that point, we can check in. Until then, it just seems kind of silly to constantly scratch the itch. It's a lot of energy to expend on a range of outcomes that will, most likely, fall into the category of "meh" (and, again, if it doesn't, by all means, let's talk then!).

Trust me, I take no pleasure in “weaponizing” it as you put it. 

If each appearance is not to be a referendum on the trade, how about a good appearance? 

Believe me, if there is a referendum I would much prefer it to be “gee maybe it was worth it, May just might help us win a World Series.” Because that is far what I would rather see happen over being right in my initial disgust over the deal,

We went from calling this guy a 1/2 back in May/June to not even rotation worthy. Yikes.

It is absolutely, 100% because he’s sucking.

Henderson is at about the same amount of innings this season and no one is talking about moving him to the bullpen. 

You think if Harrison had thrown 6 scoreless innings in his last two outings that Murphy would have been talking about moving him to the pen yesterday?

I don't know why this is even controversial. We clearly got May, a career "eh" pitcher, to give us a few quality starts down the stretch and let our more valuable arms catch their breath. Likely thought we could lab him to some improvements too. Potential upside was squeezing him into a playoff rotation if things went well. 

But the guy has been completely useless, as has Romero. It was a very bad trade. 

If May were throwing 4 2/3 starts with 2 runs it would be not good, but passable. But he hasn't been close to that lately.

Here is where I’m at

#1-  we need to be the goldfish.  There have been numerous frustrating moments in an overwhelmingly positive season.  Murphy does some ******* crazy stuff, simple mistakes that if we used common logic we could easily avoid that have cost us games, but we still have the best record in MLB

#2- playing meaningful baseball until the very end of the regular season may be in our best interest to stay sharp.  As long as we stay in position for the 1/2 seed, we’ll get our rest before the divisional round

#3- our GM has to be better.  There are some unplayable players on the roster right right now (Hamilton, Frelick), and there are some tired guys who have given it their all (Bauers, Bill)

#4-  we have 18 games to go.  To finish with a top 2 seed, we probably need to go 12-6 or better.  That starts today.  While we likely are in little danger of losing the division, we need to go a minimum of 4-2 this homestead…. We still have tough roadtrips to Pitt and Philly.  I want nothing to do with San Diego in the wildcard round

#5 looking at the next three weeks:

- secure the 1/2 seed
- give Turang rest against lefties
- Ortiz plays every day
- send Naylor/Frelick down and recall players that can actually help us
- Lara and Pratt plays every every day

if Hamilton plays, it should only be to give Turang a break against LHP, and he should be subbed out as soon as we knock out the starter.

Because a lot of people don’t want to believe that Matt Arnold made a very bad move, 

So, it’s easier to rationalize (“those prospects are years away so we don’t know if it’s a bad deal yet”, “we needed guys to chew up innings or we’d be in a very bad spot”) than it is to acknowledge the mistake. 

Matt Arnold is a very good GM and he made a bad decision and bad trade. Both of those things can be true.

The one argument about it that I can understand is that there’s still time. Maybe May puts it together in the next month and pitches well in the playoffs and helps us advance. Not holding my breath, but it’s a possibility. 

I say that mostly because as of right now, we don’t have a number 3 starter for the playoffs so he has as good of a shot as anyone.

Yeah, I saw something about that yesterday and it never occurred to me that it would affect the Cubs travel plans. I wonder how long the delay was. Hopefully longer than the flight delay the Brewers had earlier this year and the next day proceeded to lay an egg that game.
