09/12/2004 - Brewers (Sheets) at Reds (Harang)

I wonder if we will see one of the Reds position players come in and pitch.

Juan Padilla is close enough. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Sheets is at 98 pitches, thanks mostly to his 11 strikeouts. Time to call it a day?

EDIT: Yep. Good job, Ned... you might be lacking in many things, but your willingness to manage your pitchers' workloads is not one of them. You da' man.

Apparently 98 is enough.

Think Vizdog can protect an 11-run lead? I hate having a reason to ask that.

haven't been able to get near a tv or radio for the last couple of games, but when I checked the score from the library I almost pooped!!!

11 runs!?!?

11 runs with Sheets on the mound!?!?

Too bad I missed this one.

...and the 100-loss season is averted!

(Thanks in part to that PNC rainout. Let's hope that won't be the only reason why.)

My 3 yr-old and I were out in the lawn playing during the contest. She just about flipped out when Brady went yard. Clark is her favorite player (I have no idea why).

The microcosm of the life of a Brewer fan. Our children grow up as fans of back-up outfielders.

So, if Russell hits 75 x-tra base hits next year, but sets the all-time K record, can we live with that?

Yeah, TTO average is now my favorite stat. I calculated Branyan's this year, and it is actually above the number that had set the record at the time that article was written, as he currently sits at an amazing 62.26%.

I won't speak for anyone else, but as long as he doesn't sit out an inordinate number of games in a thinly veiled attempt to avoid what many would consider an embarrassing record...Yes. Yes, I could live with that.

I'm somewhere in between "Strikeouts don't matter at all" and "strikeouts are the bane of all offense" (though I'm closer to strikeouts don't matter)

But if a guy like Branyan can hit 40+ homers and produce a .450-.500 SLG%, then I don't care what he does with his outs.

Russ Branyan has a .960 OPS at this moment. He has only a .328 OBP but makes up for that (boy does he ever!) with a .632 Slg%. He's striking out 40% of the time, which is cool. If he had 500 ABs this year he would have 210 strikeouts and 48 homers and 39 doubles. I would be perfectly fine with that. Hell, I would be fine with 410 Ks if a guy hit 48 homers.

Same here.

Branyan ought to be given a one-year look at third base.

Give Krynzel a full year at AAA - he's still pretty young, so it won't hurt, I think.

The lineup of:

cf: Podsednik

2b: Spivey

1b: Overbay

lf: Jenkins

rf: Hart

3b: Branyan

ss: Hall

c: Moeller

Will be much stronger than a lot of the ones trotted out this year. Cold streaks definitely will not hurt as much. And Overbay and Jenkins will have a bit of protection behind them.

Clancy, I like the lineup, but I still question your excitement about Hart. I'd put the 40-HR potential guy ahead of him, and I'd probably put Hall infront of Hart, too. Having Hart lower might help him, too.

Still, I'd rather go

Pods

Clark

Spivey

Overbay

Jenkins

Branyan

Hall

Moeller

I just don't feel Hart can yet outproduce Clark

Krynzel has a lot to prove in AAA, still. He lost a lot of time this year with the foot injury. Letting him play every day is not a bad idea, IMO. That means the Arizona Fall League this year, and a full season in AAA. I have the impression that Krynzel may have too much power to be a leadoff hitter.

Hart, on the other hand, has proven himself a to be a definite upgrade over Brady Clark. Also, having him bat 5th breaks up the lefties. Health is the bigger issue here. I think spring training will give us an idea of whether he is ready to start, or if he needs a little more time in AAA (in which case Branyan would go to right, and the Brewers make do with Helms at third).

But Branyan's value comes from him playing 3rd. Also, Clark is better than Helms, why would we want Helms getting more time?

The Brewers have Spivey to bat second.

Besides, I think the big reason Helms had problems this year was because he missed a lot of time with that knee injury. Otherwise, I think he'd have been close to his 2003 numbers.

don't forget that AZ was going to move Spivey to RF if they kept him. His range is unbelievable at 2b, so he could be valuable at 2b or RF. I think I'd be inclined to have Spivey at 2b and Clark in RF to open the year

I like Spivey's range at 2b, and his offense is better there. But RF for him is an option. Still, based on this year I am starting to like Ginter more as a supersub than a full-time starter
