C. I'm old school. I remember guys working 300 innings year after year. These guys today are wimps.

 

Players work deeper into counts now, pitchers throw more pitches that are bad for their arms. The average hitter is much better than before so you cannot just pitch to contact unless you actually have good control. The average pitch per PA has gone up by 0.2 in just the past 18 years, they didn't keep data back in say the 50's but its been suggested that the average pitch per PA was up to a full pitch lower. There were a lot fewer walks back then as well. 300 innings in the 50's is probably more like 220 innings is now for pitch counts.

 

A strong correlation has been found between big jumps in innings pitched and injuries, I dont' see why you would want to increase Parra's chances at an injury for next year.

I really don't get why you'd want to blow out a young guy's arm to take a shot now. If you wanted to be reckless, it'd be much smarter to trade too many of your lesser prospects for a bullpen guy (e.g. trading Inman et al for Linebrink to save yourself from ruining Yo).

The Brewers didn't need a 13th arm anymore because they have 2 off days in the nexy 13 days, and roster expand in 17 days.

 

McClung, Bray, Aquino, Salas, and Difilice can all do what Spurling was doing, and hopefully one of them will step up and actually be useful.

What was wrong with Spurling? He seemed to be a decent arm in the bullpen and helped us out a few times during the season.

When I look back on Chris Spurling's Brewers tenure, I'm going to try to remember his improbably successful 2.1-inning stint that helped the Brewers beat the Mets in 13 innings on July 31.

Excellent move by the Crew. He gives up runs every time he pitches basically. Now they need to send Villanueva down to AAA for a week or two and call up Hackman, Bray, or Aquino for that time frame to give Villanueva a little time off and he can maybe figure things out with less pressure.

Yep - Bray can fill Spurling's role in September. Neither he nor Hackman could be any worse than Spurling and Villy have been lately.

 

And they do need an extra bat for when Prince serves his suspension, particularly a left-handed one. And it is after July 31st, so aquiring a decent bat at this point is going to be extremely difficult, so Gross is the best if not only option. Hopefully Prince can appeal it out until September 1st so they can call up a couple of extra bats and not be short-handed.
