I need some new music to listen to; any suggestions?

Just a disclaimer, a few Jimmy Eat World songs have been played on the radio before. As everyone knows, if one listens to FM radio, even by accident, their ears will bleed profusely, and they will then spontaneously combust, thus being reborn into an afterlife where indie music is the only acceptable genre to listen to.

It isn't that listening to the radio is bad, it is that only listening to what the radio has to offer is. There's far too much good music out there that will never see the light of day on the airwaves to limit yourself. I don't think any "indie music" person would ever seriously tell you differently, unless they were super hardcore about what they listened to.

BTW, Jimmy Eat World's "Clarity" is a really, really good album.

agreed, problem is finding the music. In Milwaukee 88.9 Radio Milwaukee does a good job of playing stuff that would never be heard elsewhere, and 1021 does play some good and different stuff. Everything else on the radio dial is identical.

also, brettac i checked out the national, pretty good

Personally, I think they get better the more you listen to them. I didn't even notice how great the drumming was until I listened to it, like 50 times. If you like "Boxer", check out "Alligator" when you get the chance. Some people will tell you that that's their best album (I sometimes feel that way myself). Really, all the albums from "Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers" through "Boxer" are excellent.

Glad you like them!

In another instance where the internet makes it really easy to hear good, free music is the band Black Kids. Check them out on myspace and download their free, 4 song EP. I'm in love with them.

It takes some work, but finding free music outside the radio definitely is possible.

Robert Randolph & the Family Band. If the opportunity presents iteslf, see them live no matter what. Unreal. If at all possible, make your first purchase (should you choose to purchase) of theirs Live at the Wetlands. Your best bet on that may well be amazon.com or Ebay, but if you have a good record store, they should either have it or get it for you. You won't regret it, trust me!

Robert Randolph is excellent. I love the sacred steel.

If someone wants to chek out some live shows without having to pay (and all with the band's permission), go to the Live Music Archive. There's 173 live shows uploaded there, you can stream or download them in various file formats: LINK

Being a Dead fan, I especially love their version of "Turn on Your Lovelight".

Speaking of new music....

I won an auction the other day on Ebay -- and because the dealer was late in getting me my CD he threw in some sampler CDs.

Since they don't appear to be Jethro Tull or Ska -- I was going to pitch them -- however I thought someone here may want to check them out.

1. Takeover Records

2. Polyvinyl Records

3. The Junior Varsity.

If there are any takers -- drop me a PM --

And for those that didn't know, the Live Music Archive that Brett mentioned isn't just Robert Randolph. There's thousands upon thousands of different shows from bands big and small. It's an amazing resource for free, legal music.

Just go to archive.org and browse by band to see all the stuff they have to offer.

Brett, are you a fan of the group Moe?

Never actually listened to them. I'm not a huge fan of jam bands, other than the Dead, Ryan Adams when he's in Dead-mode, and some Robert Randolph.

If you like Robert Randolph, check out "The Word", it's RR with John Medeski. It was a limited experiment and I don't think they're together anymore. I got to see them perform when they were together and liked it a lot.

Ok, ok, ok... I'm talking about the actual BAND behind this song.? DO NOT go running off to the Gap, lest we give our hipster friends here heart attacks...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Check out these guys, The Other Kids, used to gig with them back in the day. They have this on i-tunes now.

14-song compilation best-of from this Wisconsin bands 3 LP`s release between 1985-90 falling in the vein of early REM, Wire Train, Replacements and Translator. 'If American midwestern 80s guitar pop is your cup of beef, this is definitely for you. Sporting an incredible array of catchy, natural flowing songs, expansive sound, clean guitars, warm and natural vocals, courtesy (on their first two records at least) of Butch Vig`s pre-fame days as a local producer. Not as influenced by the Replacements as has been reported - they actually share the 'feeling' or 'vibe' rather than the music - this is certainly a less sloppy bunchkeeping things clean and consistent all the way. Alex Chilton-esque melodies over chiming/jangling guitars are everywhere.. An almost flawless collection, obscure, outstanding and excellent. Keep bringing those gems out of nowhere!'-Bucketfull Of Brains

I've listened to all my music so much and am sick of it all and need some new stuff to listen to. I mainly like rock and alternative with bands such as Nickelback, 3 Days Grace, Default, Breaking Benjamin being my favorites with some country too.
For some rock, check out The Exies, Alter Bridge, Sick Puppies, Faktion, and Evan's Blue.

I wont mention Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.

Whoops, I just did.

How about the Black Keys. I love them.

Spoon, Iron and Wine.

My first suggestion would be to turn off FM radio. Ive been FM radio free for almost 10 years.

Last weekend i could have sworn i heard the Black Keys being used as the music for some jeans commercial, but i was pretty wasted and maybe i imagined it.

As for the original poster,if you've never listened to The Stooges, you should give them a try.They/Iggy never reached the masses at a level comparable to their influence on metal and punk.

Band of Horses, The National, Spoon, Bloc Party, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Hot Hot Heat, and The New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene. If you like the last two you should enjoy Arcade Fire as well...I could go on but most of it might be a little different from the interests of most on here. One of my favs is the inde alt band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
