I need some new music to listen to; any suggestions?

I'd also recommend some Nine Inch Nails. Start off with Pretty Hate Machine and go chronologically. You might be able to skip With Teeth if time is an issue; it's only "meh" but Trent's most recent Year Zero more than puts the NIN ship back on course.

I enjoy Ray LaMontagne (sp?) and like some of Velvet Revolver's stuff...I would second the recomendation to go back in time to enjoy better "alternative" music. Old STP, Silverchair, Nirvana, Sponge and Candlebox still work their way into my regular rotation of music.

Toby, like anyone who wears girl jeans because it's "hip", is completely entitled to not like Muse, as they have already publicly demonstrated how terrible their judgment is.

BTW, Nerf Herder is awesome. As for other bands try Animal Collective, Gogol Bordello, Metric, and The Mountain Goats. All very different styles so hopefully one of them catches your fancy.

Clutch! Their first about 4 albums are good (Self Titled and Elephant Riders are my favorite). Then there's Eagles of Death Metal, a fun rock band who just wants to make you boogie.

I wont mention Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.

Whoops, I just did.

How about the Black Keys. I love them.

Spoon, Iron and Wine.

My first suggestion would be to turn off FM radio. Ive been FM radio free for almost 10 years.

I definitely concur with Spoon and Iron and Wine.

How about going really old-school and listening to some of The Cure's early albums? Disintegration and earlier would be a great place to start.

heh. it's been a while since I've posted here. Here's a few suggestions that are under the radar a little bit...and based on the tastes mentioned throughout this thread.

Mt. St. Helens: if you're into the heavy (but not really) stuff. you can find their album torrent if you're into that.

Call Me Ligtning: It's a Milwaukee band that people here in Chicago falsely think is from Chicago.

Maximo Park: awesome. totally awesome.

Baroness: southern metal...not as obnoxious as Mastodon, but still pretty raw.

You can't go wrong with "The only band that matters". Some London Calling or Sandinista- yummy.

Vinyl by Dramarama

And all the Tom Waits money can buy.

If you are into the rock scene then I would recommend you check out Alter Bridge. Go to AlterBridge.com, and they have their new album (Blackbird) up on the site, just click on the player in the bottom left corner of the screen. I absolutely love their new album, it has a good balance of everything.

Right at the moment I've got "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by The Byrds on, which needless to say is a classic.

Yeah, definitely so. The whole alternative country thing basically starts with that album. Really, Gram Parsons is a classic altogether. I don't care for any other Byrds, except for that album. His Flying Burrito Brothers stuff is probably the best he did. Though GP and Grievous Angel are terrific.

If the person who started this thread is into country, I hope it's not the mainstream stuff, because there is sooooo much great country music that never got near a radio playlist. Gram Parsons is numero uno on that list. So are some of the Texas artists listed. And the aforementioned Chris Knight is probably my favorite country musician right now. He's got about three excellent albums, sort of in the Steve Earle vein. There's a severe shortage of people playing real country music nowadays.

Also, since I haven't seen him mentioned, I'll say Elvis Costello. His first five albums are amazing.

And I'm glad RyDogg showed up in this thread, because I was going to recommend Ryan Adams and the Black Keys, but I left them for him.

brett---trust, imperial bedroom, and blood and chocolate are the nazz as well...

i couldn't misss an opportunity to recommend Ted Leo/pharmacists ---all their albums are good, but i'd say "hearts of Oak" is probably the high water mark

lately, i've beeen listening to a lot of Graham Coxon (the other guy from blur) the plimsouls, Mutiny, pavement, and as always the clash..

here's my honest suggestion though: go to allmusic.com and type in the name of a band you like...then check out some of the bands on the similar artistss list...this also works on itunes

Oh, I definitely include "Trust". That's my favorite Elvis album.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Townes Van Zandt in the country post. LOVE him.

It's funny you mention Tanya Donelly, I was watching some Breeders videos today and admiring Kim and Kelly deal circa 1993. Cannonball rocks.

Oh, and thanks for letting me play, brett, but even if you would have mentioned Ryan Adams and The Black Keys I would have seconded.

Also, check out the Verve. They are awesome.

I'll pile on by saying Spoon, The Black Keys, and the New Pornographers in that order for someone looking to branch from mainstream radio. When your ready to get nuts, take the leap to Destroyer.

How can you guys mention Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana and Pearl Jam without Alice in Chains.

If you like heavier music I would reccomend White Zombie(not Rob Zombie) and maybe DRI - Thrashhard.

Also not new either, but Probot is pretty good.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Superdrag
Superdrag! Just saw them this past Saturday night... second time I've seen them... it was outstanding!
I was there too. I even managed driving down to Nashville the week before to catch them play in their home state. You should pick up the John Davis solo stuff if you haven't yet. It's very Foo Fighters-ish. But I guess it makes sense because he recorded it at the FF's studio. The Figgs will be playing the Oneida Casino for three straight nights in January. The 6th, 7th & 8th. Anyone who considers themselves a rocker should be there. No excuses.

I listen to all kinds of music.

If you like punk - love Drop kick Murphys
The Roots are a great rap group
Big Wu if you wanna chill and listen to some hippy music
Damian Marley is amazing
Ben Harper is pretty darn good

Dispatch was a great band as well

Awesome. Beneath the Wheel from that same album is great too.

I mistakenly said Thrashhard, but the album is titled Thrash Zone. Beneath the wheel and Thrashhard are the beest songs off the album.

I'm not sure if you-or anyone else for that matter-likes Jimmy Eat World, but their latest album "Chase This Light" came out a couple days ago. I've only heard all the songs once, but so far it reminds me more of Bleed American and Futures than it does Clarity and Static Prevails, which I guess isn't too surprising.

Just a disclaimer, a few Jimmy Eat World songs have been played on the radio before. As everyone knows, if one listens to FM radio, even by accident, their ears will bleed profusely, and they will then spontaneously combust, thus being reborn into an afterlife where indie music is the only acceptable genre to listen to.
