Sheets? Latest: Dodgers, Mariners

I actually think Hughes would out-perform Sheets in '08. So, if it was Hughes for Sheets straight-up, I'd be stoked.

Not to mention, Hughes would be under Brewers control for the next 5 years at least.

Exactly.... I really do think Hughes is the next big thing.

If the 2007 season taught me anything it's that when Sheets was not in the rotation, the Brewers did not have enough pitching to win consistently. Trading Sheets doesn't shore up what I consider that glaring weakness.

To me, Sheets is like the original nintendo after a few years. It only half-worked and you had to blow in it every so often in just the right way to make it work, but when it did, it was awesome. Trading Sheets is like throwing that NES against the wall in frustration. Sure, you don't have to deal with those frustrating moments when the video game system malfunctions and all you get is a blue screen, but now all you have left to play with is tidily-winks.

I don't want tidily-winks. I want Sheets in a Brewers uniform in 2008.

But what if you already owned a Super Nintendo (Gallardo) and just needed some games for it and you were able to trade your old NES for a Gameboy (Hughes) and some Garbage Pail Kids?

I think Hughes is going to be a special pitcher. That's why I don't understand why the Twins would consider the Red Sox offer without Buchholz or Ellsbury superior to any deal with Hughes involved. If the Sox get Santana for Lester, Crisp, Lowrie, and Masterson, it's highway robbery. Getting the best starting pitcher in baseball without giving up your two best prospects is ridiculous.

Hello new sig... thanks Robideaux

So pretty much everyone here would do a Hughes for Sheets deal straight up?

What about Kennedy for Sheets or Chamberlain for Sheets? Of course I think I remember seeing that Chamberlain is untouchable. Is he really a better prospect than Hughes?

Well, I guess Hughes has that hammy injury on his record... but it's not something I'd be overly concerned about. Ellsbury and Lester aren't really the type of special players that Hughes will probably be. I think Ellsbury's a bit overrated, and Lester's just a good bottom-of-the-rotation guy.

Chamberlain's on an entire different plan than Kennedy. I'd do Chamberlain for Sheets in a heartbeat, not Kennedy for Sheets.

Personally, I'm not sure if Chamberlain's a better prospect than Hughes, but he certainly gives off that feeling to people, given his gaudy numbers out of the pen this year. If given a choice between Chamberlain and Hughes, I'd take Chamberlain, but I don't think Hughes is much of a downgrade.

I agree. How about we enter the Santana sweepstakes, and offer Parra, Hall, Gamel (about on par with the Red Sox offer), then we deal Sheets to the yanks for Hughes. So it's like we still bank on our ace for this year, but instead of Ben and his mystery injuries, it would be Johan, plus we could get Hughes for the future. Crazy, but why not roll the dice? We would still have a SP to trade (Cappy) for another player (Rolen?).

My proposal to SEA would be centered around Sheets for Adam Jones (moving Hall to 3rd and Braun to LF) ... no pun intended. any thoughts on the potential of that happening?

I wouldn't. I'm not convinced as Brian is that he'll outperform Benny next year.

I think Kennedy's stuff is below that of Joba and Hughes. Joba is probably the best among the three and is pretty much untouchable.

To me, having Phil Hughes is like having another Yovani in the team. And having two Yovani is better than one.

Having a rotation of Yo, Hughes, CV, Parra could be pretty solid over the next several years, not to mention cheap.

I have a friend in NY that says a deal surrounding Sheets was brought up on a radio program with wild differences to what we are thinking. I know that it is all just speculation but the fans out there must really be spoiled with all of their All-Star vets. He said that the majority of the people were willing to give up Hughes and Cabrera plus another chip for Sheets...even w/out an extension in place. I guess we just value a good farm more then they do...

Yeah those are the fans though. I think Cashman really does value a farm system. Of course I'd take Cabrera and Hughes plus something else for Sheets. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I'd love to see the Dodgers and Mariners compete against eachother in offers though.

Yep, that's what I was trying to say was it is a good thing that the Yanks aren't run by their spoiled fans (good for the franchise that is)...

I wouldn't be that interested in Melky, personally. Especially considering that we have Hall in CF. Hughes, though, yes.

I'm with Brian on Hughes. If they're willing to offer a Santana-esque deal for Sheets, we have to take it. We could keep Melky as a 4th OF, or more likely, flip him for more relief.

There's no way they offer a Santa-esque deal for Sheets though.

Exactly. They were offering Hughes and Cabrera plus a few spare parts for Santana

Santana >>>>> Sheets

We would be very lucky of they offered us Hughes straight up.

My point wasn't that Sheets=Santana. It was that we could capitalize on the Yanks potentially missing out on him to cash in on a larger deal. Anyone think the Yanks won't pull out all the stops to win now, especially after ponying up the megabucks to A-Rod?

The thing is though, the Yankees don't NEED to aquire anyone. When they NEED to then you can get more value from them.
