4th Annual Brewerfan.net Winter Meetings

Posted

It's just about time for the annual Brewerfan.net Winter Meetings!

Each year around the time that Pitchers and Catchers report to Spring Training, we here at Brewerfan.net get together and talk about the upcoming season. It's a time that baseball geeks like all of us can get together for the common cause: talking baseball, and tippin' a few beers.

We charge nothing for the event, ya just pay for your own drinks or food.

We have been known to give away some shirts, etc. from time to time, so be prepared for that.

This year, we will be hosting the event in the city it truly belongs, Milwaukee. As a matter of fact, we are going to be right by Miller Park.

Our bar has been chosen due to its baseball atmosphere, food, and private seating availability. We will have a back room for our event so it won't be terribly smoky, we can converse without screaming, and we can get beers quickly, which, is a priority for me.

The Bar:

Fourth Base

The Location:

5117 W National Ave
Milwaukee, WI 53214

The Date:

February 23rd (Saturday)

The Time:

8 pm (ish)

In order for me to create order, I need to know how many spaces to order.

Please let me know that you will be attending and if you are bringing a guest or two, or several.

You don't need to be some prolific poster (Lord knows I'm not). You don't need to be someone with 10,000 posts, you just need to be someone who wants to come out, eat, drink, be merry, and talk some Brewers Baseball (which, I know you can do). Also, due to the fact that this shindig is located within the hallowed walls of a tavern, ya gots to be 21 or older.

So let me kick it off for you so you are not scared.

I will be attending and my wife shall be happily at my side. That's 2 people so far!

Well my Brother and I were looking forward to going, but can't make it to Milwaukee. HOpe everybody who goes has fun. We will try to make it to the game in the summer.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

My understanding, which might be flawed, is that you have to be 21 to be a customer--unless the tavern receives a certain percentage of its revenues from food. However, bartenders can be 18.

It looks to me like Jamie checked this out, but I'm sure he'd be glad to make another call if the age issue isn't totally clear.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

It's 21 to be a customer in a bar, 18 to be an employee in a bar. The fact that you are a bartender and don't know that law scares me. Do you also serve your high school buddies? Cause then that bar won't be around long.

Could we perhaps take the 18/21 discussion to the off topic forum? It's rather interesting and perhaps we could explore it further in that area.

Fourth Base

Are we ordering off the menu? Because the menu doesn't have prices on it and the food is pretty expensive. Which you don't find out until after you get the bill.

I am working on some drink specials for us and although I don't have prices for food right now, we would probably be best served ordering what they called "Family Style". This method offers larger portions at less expensive rates.

I went there the other night to scout the place out. They have one of Harvey Kuenn's old wooden legs hanging above the bar.

I've been to 4th Base. No menus, just tell them what you want and they make it. A burger and fries will run you about $12.00. Drink prices are consistent w/ the norm. Lots of baseball memorabilia on the walls and ceiling. Harvey's wooden leg? Sweet. I was unaware they even had a back room, so that's cool. They definitely cater to the regulars but a good choice for our Winter Meetings, in my opinion.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Is it baseball season, yet? Because I'm champing at the bit...

I hope the hawing party (of two) can come. It depends on where we are in the cold and flu season, and how good or crappy the roads are en route.

I join Jamie in endorsing the event as a "hoot", though.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Cool. Looking forward to meeting a few new people.

Let's get more folks out to this thing. Right now, it appears as if only 7 or so of us are going and one of them is me and one is my wife (and we are no fun, trust me)

What do I have to do to get more people out to talk baseball?

?

How can it possibly be that you are not jumping at the opportunity to come out, see some cool baseball stuff, talk baseball, -and- drink a beer or two?

The event went pretty well. Fourth Base was happy to have us and the food was good.

I got there with mary and we found Nick, the happy youngster and his wife. Nick brought along another couple who's names elude me at the moment.

Jimbo and his wife Paula were there and it was good to see them.

Lots of good conversation getting to know a bit about each other and some good baseball talk.

All in all, there were 8 of us.

Well, the Winter Meetings have concluded and we've reached a consensus. The Brewers will, indeed, win the National League Central in 2008.

Good times by all that attended. Sorry to those who could not make it. Met Brewer Jamie, Jimbo and their supportive Brewerwives. Look forward to meeting all other BF'ers as the season rolls along.
