  1. Excellent read, as always. The work Bruce Seid & his folks did in last June's draft is just incredibly good, imo. I like Crew07's thought that some of the pitchers in the teens could really step up in '10. I'd be surprised if at least one didn't really assert himself. Rogers & Peralta look like decent candidates to me. As long as Rogers can sustain his health, he could move to Huntsville quickly -- any chance he might see Nashville next season? I still like the SP, thank you very much. If the health becomes a real roadblock, meh, I guess I can settle for Wagner2.0 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  2. His point is that, if it were legal, you wouldn't have those things over weed
  3. Why did the patient have to find the proper method of diagnosis? That's really troubling to me. This obviously stinks, but I guess at least it wasn't a SP.
  4. This is good news. I don't think Wolf + someone like Davis is exactly what the Crew needs per se, but it'd certainly be better than other seemingly realistic scenarios. Instead of Davis, I'd like to see the team pursue guys like Sheets & Harden, so there's some more upside. Also, very nicely played, crewcrazy http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. Aren't you from the Northwest part of the country? Maybe I'm way off, but I thought I remember you saying that. Born & raised in SE WI. Moved out to Portland, OR a couple years ago, but recently moved back to WI due to not being able to find any work after being laid off.
  6. Ugh, I'm sorry this 'Cam strikes out & wasn't good' thing has resurfaced. I didn't intend for that.
  7. And I think that's probably why Melvin didn't wait for Olivo. Olivo likely would have cost more than the ~$2M Zaun got, and of course Melvin is pinching pennies right now to keep room for that big SP addition.
  8. I think (like others have noted) that Rivera will be out the door & Kottaras will share catching duties with Zaun next season.
  9. Always appreciate your updates, Weatherman. I'm actually looking forward to some more snow, but this might be a bit too much http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. The reason I said that is that there really isn't a point in trading for Gomez if you're not going to get him everyday PT in order to develop. I didn't consider what endaround posted, though -- that Gomez could get some time at AAA. Unless Gomez takes a step forward, which is obviously what Doug Melvin thinks is going to happen. Whether it's from coaching or natural progression (or more likely a little of both), I wouldn't be that surprised if Gomez hits better than Pierre in 2010. Fwiw, the CHONE projections think Gomez (.262/.324/.385) will be close to Pierre (.289/.336/.371) next season.
  11. Oh man, I'd hate to see Cam sign with the Cubs. I don't know why, but that possibility hadn't yet seeped into my brain.
  12. FoxSports rumor via MLBTradeRumors that the Brewers are still a good candidate for where FA Doug Davis winds up. I'm sure I've said this before, but as long as Davis is the lesser of the two SP acquisitions Melvin makes this offseason, I think he'd be fine.
  13. I don't get what adding an extra year of a bad contract would do to help the Brewers. Paying your 4th OF $18.5M for the next two seasons just isn't a good plan for a team looking to shed payroll in order to add SPing. At least Suppan can be off the books after 2010, and is a pitcher. What would Pierre get, 350 ABs per season? It doesn't make sense to me. If you can unload all or the vast majority of Suppan's contract for a low-level prospect, and you have the rest of the rotation & bullpen filled, fine. But this would just be adding more financial burden to an already cash-strapped roster. Jody Gerut is a better option as a 4th OF, bats LH, and is remarkably cheaper. Plus he's year-to-year in terms of contract with two more arbitration seasons remaining (as best I can tell)... and he's already on the team.
  14. The TD/FG concept is an interesting analogy, but I don't want to see the Brewers get conservative in that sense with young arms until they have to (injury, ceiling, etc.)... or in other words, not until it's '4th down' http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I always find the TINSTAAPP philosophy interesting ("there is no such thing as a pitching prospect"). Of course it's a bit overstated, but interesting nonetheless imo. '03 Joe Sheehan article for Baseball Prospectus
  15. Wow, I'm glad everyone's chatting this up. Group G is definitely the 'group of death' if one exists.
  16. Point taken. Lucroy definitely needs time at AAA imo, but to me, demoting Angel to AA isn't much more than just keeping him under a heat lamp (of course it's technically an option). I don't want to see the Brewers go that route with prospects -- or even just this prospect -- since imo it's important to challenge them... esp. since Salome showed progress in his '09 hitting performance. While it may be an extreme case, I think Gamel's demotion back to AAA (& subsequent struggles offensively) last season demonstrates the kind of negative impact such a move can have. My question is why Lucroy should get preference over Salome. Lucroy didn't hit for much power in AA last season, and there's no guarantee that he'll produce in Nashville better than Salome did in '09. Why should Salome have to prove he can stay healthy along with a demotion to AA (after succeeding in AAA)? Why shouldn't Lucroy be the one to repeat AA (.798 OPS last season, to Salome's .748 in Nashville)? I understand that Lucroy is regarded as the better defender, but I have to guess that the difference in the challenge of defending at AA v. AAA is lesser than the difference in the challenge of hitting at AA & AAA. I've veered off-topic from the Zaun signing, so I apologize. I just think that Melvin & Co. have created a kind of problem in player development unless there are specific teams that have expressed interest in either Lucroy or Salome as part of a package to net SPing. I actually like the Zaun pickup, as I think he'll be a solid one-year solution.
  17. This HAS to be your favorite thread in all of Brewerfan-land Craig http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. Sure, Braun will continue to grow & get better. But right now, his LF defense is not good. I don't see the "bashing" there. I just see reality. His speed helps him make more plays than a slower player with similar instincts would. I think he'll develop into an average LF eventually.
  19. To build off what Joe noted, putting Bay in Safeco for half his games would result in a noticeable dip in his production, to boot. If I'm Seattle, I just can't justify spending the franchise player type money it'd take to land Bay, to essentially get .850-.875 OPS production with awful defense. I doubt Bay would want to sign a contract to DH anyway, since that would probably cut into his value. There's definitely a love-in with Junior enjoying his twilight years back in Seattle, and I agree that he has the DH job basically out of courtesy (& ticket sales) at this point. I think the M's spent a lot of money on an aging player that doesn't provide much power, but at least Figgins is a competent IF defender. Of course, there's also the aspect of this signing that Seattle improved themselves while hurting a divisional rival. However small that impact may be, it's still a bonus if Jack Z. plans on competing in the next coming seasons. What confuses me is choosing Figgins over retaining Adrian Beltre. Will Beltre really command that much more than 4/$36M? He's an elite defender, and has a lot more pop. I guess I'd find it pretty funny if Beltre winds up signing with LAA.
  20. Seems like people are just completely overlooking Salome, who probably has the best bat (at least in terms of ceiling) of all 4 players. I still don't understand why a logjam would be created intentionally, so I think we'll see Lucroy or Salome dealt sooner rather than later.
  21. I have to agree on the US lucking out on that draw, basically. England is tough, but I think recently the US squad has proved that it can play with just about anyone. I can't wait for this to start, either! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  22. Yeah, the ESPN ticker I saw tonight noted two broken vertebrae. OUCH. Bohannon is not nearly as good of a shooter as people think he is Count me as one of those people that still thinks he's an outstanding shooter. Guys that hit at a ~90% clip at the FT line can shoot, period (imho). I wouldn't be surprised to see him hit well over those rates you noted this season, especially if Hughes continues to be McNasty & draw defenders into the lane as he drives (not to mention more attention from defenses in general). And like I mentioned earlier, Bohannon's ability to man the point competently just increases his value that much more.
  23. ND's AD actually announced today that their football program wouldn't accept any bowl bid. They cited 'unique circumstances' or something like that. I mean, I get it... you fired your horribly overpaid & overvalued coach... but wouldn't it be better to let your kids play in a bowl game? Odd.
  24. I agree with you on this, 804. Braun is barely adequate on defense in LF, and that's largely due to his awesome bat. I guess if the only way to improve the offense is to add a LF, I could see sliding Braun to RF (at least he has the arm strength for it)... but imho that's a big 'if'.
  25. Is that why they pushed Lucroy to boost his trade value or was it legit and they dump angel? Yeah, the talk of Lucroy jumping to MLB is what's has lingered for me, too. I don't know what's going on, but if Melvin doesn't have some attractive deals/avenues already lined up or (at the very least) in mind, I'm sure I won't be the only very disappointed Brewers fan this offseason. I just don't see how you can make this kind of signing without knowing you can ship Lucroy or Angel as part of an offer to get a very good return... I just don't know why you'd risk stunting one or both players' growth in 2010.
