  1. This looks like another sharp pickup by Melvin, even if Kottaras doesn't end up being a real difference-maker. Like MJ points out, there's a pretty good chance that Kottaras can match or better the production we got from catcher last season. If the two catchers are Kottaras & Lucroy, one thing we know is that there'll be no shortage of walks from the catcher spot. Certainly raises my hope that Kendall won't be back. Yes... I think this is gradually becoming more clear as the offseason progresses. Or at least, I hope.
  2. Congrats, man! Don't forget to drop in every now & then http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. I agree that it's mostly fan-generated, but it's not like teams don't stick guys that can hit at corner OF positions if they don't stick at more premium spots. What gets me is when the 'Gamel to the OF' scenarios involve Braun in RF, which I think is just a horrible idea.
  4. Gamel was league-average for his position in his first MLB stint. That's definitely better than nondescript -- we've just been spoiled by Fielder & Braun.
  5. From everything I've seen/heard on Heether, he's more of a 2B/3B type that can handle SS in an emergency, not a guy you want getting a lot of time at short. If Counsell isn't back, Melvin & Co. will have to wind up paying for a vet SS reserve on the open market. I guess the good news is that there should be a decent amount of choices out there. I wonder if maybe Counsell was already going to test the FA market, so Melvin was already planning on going the FA route. The only thing that stinks to me on this is the fact that Counsell's a LHB. If our starting IF winds up being McGehee/Esco/Weeks/Prince, clearly a LHB complements 2B, 3B, & SS the best... and especially if the other IF reserve is the RHB Heether. Some potential FA targets for 2B/SS reserve: Nick Green Alex Gonzalez Adam Everett Juan Uribe John McDonald Khalil Greene Omar Vizquel Unfortunately, all of these guys bat RH aside from Vizquel (a switch-hitter). I tried to find guys known for solid or good defense, since there aren't really any LHB options that can handle SS out there aside from Counsell & Vizquel. I can understand why Craig would want to hit the FA market this offseason, and he'll probably have 2-year deals out there if he wants them. I hope we can simplify this whole mess & just bring him back.
  6. The walks in Fielder's projection are kinda strange. 76 BBs would be his lowest total aside from his rookie season, and by a pretty decent amount. I'm not saying Fielder will walk over 100 times each season, but to project a prolific young power hitter (who's demonstrated a great eye) for that kind of dropoff just seems kinda strange. The Gomez & Gerut projections are interesting. I get the feeling that Gerut will see quite a lot of PAs v. RHP this coming season. He's a really good candidate to be our 4th OF with an all-RHB starting trio. CHONE has Gomez taking a step forward (.260/.324/.378/.702), if only a modest one, which is an encouraging reminder that he *is* still a work in progress. One of my main concerns for '10, though, is that one of Escobar & Gomez will be hitting high in the lineup. The CHONE numbers are out for MIN, too... fwiw Hardy's line is .257/.311/.409/.720, roughly equal to his new teammate Brendan Harris. For comparison's sake, Escobar's line is .282/.325/.380/.705.
  7. I have to guess that fatigue & the notoriously hitter-friendly AZ air are the main reasons so many pitchers are struggling. Facing top hitting prospects from basically every organization can't help, either. I hope Butler, Rogers, etc. all fare better, but I'm just having a hard time making heads or tails of all the mound struggles.

  9. Fwiw, James has a 4.75 ERA projected for Jackson in '10. That's kind of surprising to me, only since James's projections tend to be the most optimistic.
  10. Actually Gamel's production overall was league-avg. for a 3B, and his stats when starting was well above-avg. He did fine with the chances he got, but he just didn't get a real chance, only intermittent playing time from a manager that thinks he's a "flake." The only way I see the 3B job being guaranteed to McGehee is if Gamel is traded.
  11. Not so fast on Escobar. He might wind up being disappointingly close to Hardy's '09 (esp. the OBP & SLG). I agree with Tbadder's critical eye on our offense. We could quite easily be very mediocre in 2010.
  12. Is it reasonable to expect .310/35/120 next year? The scary thing to me about Braun is that, yes, you should expect a .300-ish AVG & 70 or more XBHs in any given season. His ability is just incredible. If he's ever able to develop the kind of plate discipline Fielder has, he'll be an absolute nightmare.
  13. Congrats to Rock. He's had a fine baseball career.
  14. Glad to see this move. Like others have stated, sure it's great to free up more salary room, but there's no guarantee said salary room will be used properly. If this moves winds up essentially making room for Doug Davis, I'll pull my hair out. However, if you look at the cumulative $ freed up from the Hardy/Gomez swap & this move, it's ~ a touch under $20M at this point. Melvin has surely given himself a good amount of wiggle room to make things happen, and that's of course the first step.
  15. Driveline Mechanics has a post up on Rich Harden. I'm obviously not introducing a new name, nor am I speaking in favor of Harden for the first time, but he seems to be another ideal Peterson candidate. DM also did a blog post on Harden back in 2008. Both are worth reading, imho. And Fangraphs has a piece up on Ben Sheets. Not really anything a BF.net frequenter doesn't already know.
  16. What isn't true? Brewer isn't actually taking recruiting visits?
  17. Monetary concerns & past injury concerns aside, Lackey just doesn't appear that he places much importance on physical conditioning in general. Not the kind of player I want to see a long-term contract used on... let alone the facts that a) long-term pitching contracts are always a bad idea for small-market teams & b) there's no realistic chance the Brewers actually sign Lackey.
  18. I agree with vannzee on Prior -- he's just a 'name' at this point. Wang's injury was/is pretty serious... here's the DL Informer's take back on July 30: Wang seems like the perfect type of pitcher to work with Peterson, but that injury really is cause for concern. He had leg & foot problems, but I'm not sure if the shoulder injury was related/due to overcompensation.
  19. Zito also tweaked his mechanics this season, so it wasn't just some fluky improvement. That said, his price tag is still just ridiculously (& way too) high.
  20. Haha! 2000's Final Four squad disagrees with you! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Now we'll see how good of a COACH Buzz really is, but man he sure has proven he can recruit. I tend to think of "he's a good recruiter" as the college coach equivalent of "he calls a good game." Glad to see for MU's sake that it wasn't just hot air about Buzz. I think calling Ryan's athletes just some scrappy guys is overstating things. Leuer, Hughes, Nankivil, and Bohannon have a lot of game, just to name a few. Ryan has recruited a lot of good players.
  21. I want Carol Hannah or Althea to win, but I think it'll be Althea or Irina.
  22. Ah, I was forgetting that Vazquez is in a contract year. In that case, I'd structure an offer around McGehee + one or some of those MiLB prospects.
  23. I think Pogo was joking, since Brewer looks to be moving on to college football.
  24. I know what you mean about the use of "average" & that it's not a bad thing to say about a player. I just feel like we just hear so much about Lucroy's defense, and wonder how far ahead of Salome he really is. At this point, it'd seem Lucroy's plate discipline is the biggest difference between the two.
  25. Congrats, Ryan. Very well-deserved. That's an impressive feat.
