  1. tried it this weekend and wasn't a huge fan. it's half-beer/half-margarita, but the flavour of each half is being dulled by the other, so the end result is nothing too exciting. but the place actually had Leine's, which isn't all that common here in North Carolina. Too bad it was one of the few versions of it I don't like. In fact, good beer in general is rare in North Carolina. no gambling and bad beer...this is like torture for me.
  2. ....unless he used the money to fund his international dog-fighting enterprise. Maybe he gave the dogs steroids, too.
  3. nothing in what you wrote says to me you owe your company anything more than you've already given them--you finished your contract. and it isn't job-jumping when you either move to a position of greater responsibility or higher pay (though you should only talk to employers about how it was a bigger challenge). you're not making a lateral move in this case. and if it's so terrible to leave your first job after a short time, then they should have had you sign a longer contract.
  4. i think he has plenty of value to the Brewers, though i think it's mostly for next year. He can replace Jenkins when he leaves or be a platoon-mate for some RH LF, and rest Hall and Hart. Plus at this point you wonder if Melvin thinks more of Nix than he does Gross. and it's a bit of a stretch so soon, but if LaPorta is indeed ready to come up by 09, then we're not going to be signing any big-name FAs in the offseason, so it's a great chance for Nix to step in and try to produce.
  5. trading Gallardo for any young, very promising starting pitcher seems redundant.
  6. That said, I wouldn't want to try an aloe vera brat. but it cools and softens your esophagus when you swallow.
  7. when I think back, I wish I gave my entire graduating class the finger, not that i'm suggesting you do that. freedom is so incredible when you first get it--just keep setting your alarm.
  8. At the very least its not a "they rode off into the sunset together" ending. ugh, no kidding. it stinks watching a good movie for two hours only to have it entirely ruined by Hollywood's desire to create a happy ending, even though it doesn't fit with the rest of the story. Then again, give the people what they want...That Robin Williams movie where his family dies and he follows his wife to hell had that feeling. wasn't Broken Flowers somewhat ambiguous? was it his son? what next?
  9. The whisper from Lost in Translation was just like the whisper from The Hustler, when George C. Scott whispered something in the lady's ear while Paul Newman was shooting, and it was enough to make her kill herself. Or there's the final scene from Being There, when Peter Sellers walks on water.
  10. but maybe before any Dunn trade we could get him to waive his free agency in 08. Dunn could really be just the right fit for this year and next and I think would be worth Inman (if Inman's even enough). Provided he plays in 08, he's instant offense to a team that is starving for it, we don't strike out a ton, so can absorb all his, and having Dunn for 08 fills in the time gap until LaPorta plays in 09. It assumes he'd play for us in 08, but giving up Inman, likely Inman++, wouldn't be terrible, because either he's an integral part of an 08 playoff run or we trade him late-season and essentially get Inman back again.
  11. Huxley's A Brief History of Time has probably gone the furthest to shape my perception of politics and society. Then also Machiavelli, Lord of the Flies and Paradise Lost.
  12. I'm not a huge Yost fan and think his future is going to be a question at the end of the season, but bottom line is the team he's running is leading the division.
  13. better players will beat lesser players. That probably is more to the better understanding of the associated probabilities. I am sure that this is true. true at least to the degree that probability plays into each hand. Of course you can't say that poker is entirely a matter of probability--it's simply one aspect of the game. Probability is really not that hard, but speed in your calculations makes a difference. Plenty of guys I've played with could do the numbers, but they weren't that strong players. The importance of probability is also relative to the game you are playing, more important in Stud and Limit, but less so in NL. I've played with plenty of people who knew how to do the calculations yet weren't fantastic players and vice versa.
  14. i'm always wondering why Estrada is in the 5-hole, too. but then i think about the other options to bat 5th, and they've never really seemed a whole lot better. Mench? Weeks and his BA? slumping Hall? as much as I don't love Estrada there, it just doesn't seem like we have a viable alternative.
  15. There's no skill in figuring out if a guy is bluffing. It's just a guess based on your hand, how many chips you have, how many chips are in the pot and how many players are commited to play the hand. ....how many chips the other player has, position, any tells, his playing style, past hands.....and you've got to come up with the correct answer to all of those variables in a matter of seconds. no skill in that. you must be an immensely successful player if you always know when a player is bluffing or not. I've played against some very successful players and they don't always know.
  16. maybe if it was a one-for-one deal in trading away one of our future stars, that we could probably live with. but a two-for-two is a lot to give up (future-wise, not necessarily talent-wise).
  17. maybe he'll fall to 6th in the draft!
  18. well, the game isn't ALL probabilities. part of it, certainly, but I'm not doing calculations for every single had I play. And probability requires every variable to be known, but you still often have the unknown of what the other guy is holding; therein is the skill.
  19. poker is no way a game of chance; it takes great skill. it's not a matter of luck, it's a matter of numbers. On the surface, a Queen coming up to make your straight seems like luck, but over the long haul probability always plays out. And it's the Brunson's of the world (well, not so much his son), who have the skill to take advantage of those statistically-advantageous situations. that said, it's not a sport. if even the slightest amount of physical exertion qualified something as a sport, then there would be no limit to what would fit in that definition.
  20. As far as I'm concerned, it's the greatest thing I've ever read. It's the only book I've ever come across that has so uniquely used sound in the writing. And you can just hear Coltrane doing the soundtrack to the book throughout.
  21. it's a nice thought to want to improve this team to make an even stronger playoff push this year, but I personally think two or three extra years of competitive/division-winning baseball down the road is much more valuable.
  22. Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. semi-autobiographical, Miller makes every effort to live the sort of life he chooses to live and extract the full enjoyment out of every situation. What I personally loved were the moments when the writing would briefly slip into incredible poetry. mysoginistic, harsh, base, yet touching and sentimental.
  23. America really needs to stop stretching the definition of sport or Connect Four will be in the Olympics and all those kids playing Magic Cards in high school will be demanding a letter.
  24. I haven't viewed a Braun AB yet, so is Braun's pose comparable to Sosa's HR hop and then that stupid hand thing he did in the dugout? Did you have a problem when Sosa did that? (not trying to hijack the thread, just trying out a comparison)
  25. I was putting one together, but I'll second Briggs' lineup, though I'd switch Hall and Fielder vs. LHP, maybe just to keep Fielder as a permanent #3 hitter.
