  1. I'd thought Biggio was the all-time leader in HBP, too. and that Weeks, though it's obviously early, is currently way over Biggio's pace. Biggio's totally in. what a great player he was. maybe 500 HRs isn't a watermark anymore, but 3,000 hits sure is. you can't inject that ability. Biggio is not doubt at all. now Bagwell, on the other hand...
  2. I know this has been discussed earlier, but I think the question has become more interesting after this draft and LaPorta. is Melvin thinking of him like he did Weeks, that he's going to be able to handle a rush-job through the minors and be at the ML level really quickly? I think yes. so I think that prevents us from signing any sort of player near their prime, because they're going to demand a 4-year contract, maybe more. so that just blocks LaPorta in LF. I think Jenkins at $9 million is awful high, and we can't really look too closely at his track record because he's suddenly not hitting lefties like he used to--not that it was ever great, but now it's terrible. What I envision is a Lofton-type of player, someone past-prime that would be adequate, with Gross/Gwynn providing some starts. They would only require a two-year contract, which is enough time for LaPorta to get up to the bigs.
  3. my brother always wore a Konstantinov jersey to every Badger game. it was one from his Russian team. when he'd see the players in the bar, they all already knew him as the "russian hockey jersey guy."
  4. i'll ask one of my bosses on Monday and see what he says, he's a triathaloner. my experience is in hiking, so take it for what it's worth.....the tendons is what I was thinking along with your doctor. the patela tendon that holds the kneecap in place, when the muscles in the legs are getting overworked, it has less strength to hold the kneecap solidly in place, it starts sliding just slightly and that causes a slight but not severe knee pain. you can buy patella braces for the knee, but to start with, just to see if this might indeed be the case, tie something like a bandana medium tightness just underneath the kneecap. hopefully that might work for you. I agree with the above posters that I don't think it's the shoe. i've developed bursitis in my knee from new insoles in my shoes (the slight change in pronation caused it), but since your shoes are worn in already, they're probably not the source of the problem.
  5. I agree, Gwynn would be a beautiful fit in Florida. plus Milwaukee adding a solid bullpen arm might be an appropriate proactive response to Chicago adding someone big. I like Gwynn and think he'll be a good ML leadoff guy, but he just seems too blocked here. Gwynn's never going to move Hall out of CF, plus in 2-3 years our speedy CF prospects will be knocking on the door.
  6. This has do be doing wonders for Jones's morale. yeah, he's already a Cub. How much can one man take?
  7. can't the Yankees at least make a legitimate run at Boston or even the WC yet? they've certainly been playing better lately. sure, Hughes must be out of the question, but there'd be rioting if Yankee fans thought they were giving up on the season. I definitely see them as buyers, plus I can't figure Steinbrenner knows how to or even wants to run a team any other way than playoffs-or-bust. deadline trading didn't seem too down last year, but maybe it's a philosophical shift in baseball after all these mid-market teams have gotten so good due to keeping their prospects. Heck, you'd have thought the Sexon trade would have scared teams away from that permanently.
  8. to what extent are we overvaluing Hart, though, just because the current month's memory is of him making jokes out of opposing pitchers? obviously he's just awesome right now, and of course I hope it continues, but can we say he's playing a little over his head right now? I mean, to start the season most of us projected him around a 25/25 guy. Has that opinion drasticall changed based on one amazing month of play? If not, is the value of a cheap 25/25 Corner Outfielder really as high as "never trade him no matter what"? otherwise at what point does a player become established with the organization and no longer a possible trading piece vs. an upcoming AAAA guy?
  9. about three weeks ago i added Gordon to my fantasy team, and he's been awesome, so immediately i thought 'why trade Gordon for Pence. Gordon's been awesome.' but I looked up the stats and Pence continues to be amazing, and definitely the ROY so far (sorry, Braun). June splits: Gordon: .337/.389/5/18 Pence: .358/.378/4/16 edit: wait, sorry, Gordon and Pence aren't competing for ROY. my dumb.
  10. I tend to agree end, though last I read there could be as many as 10 teams in the running to try and get him. so just based on an amount of competition, that's why I don't think Hart will be enough. I'm not a huge Buherle fan and hope Melvin isn't blinded by his no-hitter. if Villy, Gallardo or even Vargas can do 80% of what Buherle could do on this team, then definitely Hart's not worth it (though i'm not a fan of trading prospects for rentals in the first place).
  11. if you ask any of us, we'd probably agree that the Brewers have a commanding lead on the Central, but I bet the Cards and the Cubs think they can still catch up. Maybe even Houston if they can add a big hitter. the other two divisions are so close, I agree with you that there should probably be a lot of motivated buyers this year. Should Dontrelle be added to the list?
  12. after I posted the Mariotti comment, I've seen Hart's name pop up a couple other places, so at least it's not solely Mariotti playing idiot wind. maybe just to be argumentative, but with Hart we're talking about a trade-very-high move. Would he get Buherle? no, but I'm sure a great bullpen guy or a stronger rental outfielder. Then come next year, I'm sure we could find a mid-priced FA outfielder to take his place at around 80% of Hart's production. though part of it is just playing devils advocate, I can't say I value Hart quite as highly as I would Weeks and Hardy, not as a matter of production (no argument against what Hart's done) but for the relative value of good SS and 2B prospects over corner outfield ones, if we can still consider all three prospects, since none of them have peaked yet.
  13. I saw a Mariotti mention of Corey Hart as someone we could trade. It was the first time I've heard his name mentioned as a trade candidate, and I guess just wanted to throw the possibility out here to see if it's resoundingly rejected or gets a maybe. I wouldn't trade him straight up for any bullpen guy or really even a starter because it'd be a big offensive drop in the lineup to have him replaced by Mench and Gwynn, but if we'd trade for a big-hitting outfielder, I think Hart would make sense. Granted, trading Hart goes against what I would like to see, which is only trade lesser blocks to the team like Jenkins or Mench for some ok-level bullpen guy. and I'm not even sure that I'd like to see Jenkins gone.
  14. doesn't the iPhone constitute a more-functional Blackberry? at this point, even if the price were cut in half, I'm not sure I could squeeze enough value out of it to be worth it. And because I think there's only one service provider for the phone, I'm sure they're going to completely gouge us on the service fees. oh, and I'm a PT video-store counter-geek. it's the most frustrating thing in the world to deal with the customer who can't get off their stupid phone for 30 seconds to let me check their movies out. If there's a long line behind him/her, I like to stand there and wait until they're done with their conversation, that way everyone in the line gets mad at them. when will people realize, now that everyone owns a cell phone, that it's no longer cool to be on it all the time?
  15. i bet she also held her breath and stomped her feet until her parents gave in. and in a few years mom and kid will be going to the same school district.
  16. sure everyone likes Caddyshack, but the movie didn't change filmmaking or challenge social thinking like a good lot of the list movies. and quotability definitely shouldn't play a part in it. I quote Napoleon or Tommy Boy a lot more than I do Caddyshack, but neither of those movies would make a best ever list. I agree about Sixth Sense, it really shouldn't be on there. Was that just a concession to the types of moviegoers who have whatever last film they saw as their all-time favourite, that black and white automatically makes it a bad movie, and that subtitles are a crime?
  17. isn't it way too early in his career to think about dealing Cappy? you've got to give the guy a couple more years to really learn what kind of pitcher he will become. he hasn't been in the league all that long; do you still consider him a prospect pitcher or an established one?
  18. come on, A Streetcar Named Desire was great. an ordinary film with mediocre actors became a great film with the cast it held. it's like a lesson in how to be a great actor.
  19. looks like i've just killed 20 minutes of my workday. awesome. thanks.
  20. wow, that's a ton of work into this site, and kudos to the people who spend so much time with it. i'm mostly a hawk on the chat forum, and it seems fine to me: must be a lot of people always trying to get in. so why not make sure things are lively by making sure people are talking. so far the rules here haven't been to Stalin-esque, and I have yet to recieve my strike-one. i know it's a ton of work to maintain an open yet civilized forum, and so far, so good. definitely no interest in returing to the ESPN board.
  21. but shouldn't there be some consideration for the impact a whole series has made to movie history? maybe Indiana Jones wasn't the greatest singular movie, but together, the series is unforgettable.
  22. i'm not too bummed about picking sixth. we got our chance at picking high, and any higher this year would just be a greater indication of the ineptitude of the team. all the top draft picks won't make us a good team. we've got a chance to be decent with the players we've got, if only we learned how to play like a team, and i don't see that 1 vs. 6 is going to change that.
  23. ah, the race issue is totally overblown. if a GM is racist and doesn't like to sign whatever type of player, they will ultimately be losers in the game, missing out on whatever good Black or Latino players are there. it's an interesting discussion, but i just think in the end, if you have racial preferences, there's no way to succeed in professional sports with that attitude.
  24. I can't believe City Lights falls all the way to 76. it's a crime to put it that low. and where's Ghostbusters on that list? it's one of those favourites, like Groundhog Day, that everyone likes but often people don't stop to think that it was really a well-made movie. Ghostbusters should be represented.
  25. but the Bucks have a ton of cap space and there's (from what I understand) few good FA's this year. so maybe a big-contract guy isn't inconceivable. does anyone here who follows the team more than I do think the Bucks will/should make a big splash during the draft rather than just taking the #6 pick? odd, I don't enjoy NBA basketball, but I love following the general-management side of it.
