This team is set up to make a serious run at the World Series as their roster stands right now. Yuni and Casey do hurt them that is for sure, but they have the enough bats and enough pitching to make a serious run. I think most would agree with this. The problem is that there are some changes that can be made to improve our chances. If the odds of getting to the World Series are 50% I want Melvin to be making moves to improve those odds to 51% if he can. It's hard to go game by game and say "Well if there had been an average SS playing, the opponent would not have had those two singles which led to two more runs." When Yuni only misses a ball by a step or two I think it is a safe assumption that an average SS would have made the play.
I like that roster if Hairston gets the majority of starts at SS. Even if he doesn't it still addresses most of the problems with the current roster. The saddest thing in my opinion is that getting to that roster wouldn't require trading or losing any valuable players.
I am not sure what you would find of interest. I think most players hit better in favorable counts and most are more successful when they hit the first pitch. Pitch selection is the key.
He was advocating for the Brewers mangerial approach which takes the long-term view that guys who under perform will eventually return to the mean. Rather than calling up a guy like Green with great AAA numbers, but you don't know how he'll perform in MLB. I know that people on this board widely don't agree with that approach Most of the stat guys believe players will return to the mean. The disagreements come about where the mean for each player is.
Terrible/bad is just semantics. He is still one of the worst hitting SS in the majors this year. He has had a few good weeks but as I have stated in the past, the only thing I am concerned with is how he should be expected to perform in the future and his performance this month isn't going to have much effect on that. Not when weighted against his career numbers.
Up to this point, Yuni's bat has not been that bad. Yes it really has. He has had a good month which, as another poster put it, has made him one of the worst SS in the league instead of the worst SS in the league. I don't dislike Yuni, I just don't want him playing for my team. I have tried to mostly stay clear of the Yuni threads. It is a pointless discussion because all there is to defend him is a ridiculously small sample that in no way should be used to predict future performance.
Except where would Lawrie play? Someone else would have to get the boot.3B, 1B or RF/LF. Hart's contract is only through 2013. McGehee and Fielder would likely need replacements next year. We would probably have ended up with something like 2 Lucroy 3 Gamel 4 Weeks 5 Lawrie 6 Some guy 7 Braun 8 Cain 9 Hart with Lawrie or Gamel sliding into RF after Hart leaves the other at 1B and Green at 3B. Would probably have been a pretty solid lineup. Hard for a manager to screw up since most of the hitters would be pretty close in talent.
Besides he probably not even the worst defensive player on the team; that goes to Prince. The fact that it is debatable is a pretty big indictment in itself.
First, they started the crazy infield shifts to make up for his bad range. They do and they don't. The shifts probably helped some but our defense would look much better if we had a SS with good range positioned like Yuni has been. We still see several balls a week that an average SS gets to.
I'm trying to decide what I would have said then if you would have told me on August 7th we were going to play a lineup of Plush, Lopez, Braun, Fielder, Kotsay, Yuni, Counsell, Lucroy. When does football start?
Hairston is not a wizard with the glove at SS either You don't need to be a defensive wizard to be a lot better than Betancourt. Betancourt is just about the same with the bat against righties than lefties. No, he isn't. Betancourt stinks vs RHP. What Betancourt has done over the last 3-4 years is a much better indication of what to expect than what he has done this year or in just the last few weeks. He's hit in 15 of his past 16 games, on another 8 game hitting streak, and raised his OBP about 20 points. There's not much more you can ask of him, or even chance taking him out of the lineup. he(Hairston) stinks against Myers. None of this stuff matters. It is small sample and not predictive.
For the 3rd time in this thread, Betancourt is bad defensively for a SS. Have never said otherwise. That said, I am pretty confident in saying MLB teams, which spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year...are now using better information to determine how good a player is defensively than the free defensive metrics available that most people like to reference. We know teams probably have access to better defensive stats. That doesn't mean they use them. What is your point?
Whether it turns out really well or not, it is nice to have a local brewery so committed to trying new things. Absolutely. That is why I pimp them every chance I get. If you read this whole thread you would be at least half convinced that I was on the payroll.(I'm not but if they want to give me some free beer I wouldn't decline.) I just wish they had a decent true non-fruit Belgian style beer on their roster. I can't wait for the black IPA. I am considdering making one myself. I doubt I will since I am not a fan of bitterness but I will probably do one with some hop bursting. As for belgians, are there any U.S. breweries you recommend that do this style well? Ommegang and Goose Island off the top of my head. I love the dubbel from both. They also do several other Belgian styles. The Vintage in Madison has several Belgian styles on tap but their taps rotate pretty frequently. They have a really good Dubbel and Triple, which I believe they will be bringing back in the fall. They also had a Belgiam IPA made with Sorachi Ace hops which I somewhat tried to make at home.(turned out pretty tasty but not like theirs) There is another one I have never tried but supposedly has good Belgian style beer in Allagash. It is also very interesting Ommegang makes such good Belgians and now their former brew master, Randy Thiel, currently works at New Glarus in their lab. I have also had several really good Belgian style beers at The Vintage in Madison. Honestly I think they make the best Belgian style beers in Wisconsin, outside of the fruity ones. Dan Carrey makes really good fruity beer.
Not sure if I like them messing with a style like Abbey. I don't believe it will have a strong chocolate taste. It might also go well with the style. I wish we had a brewery in the state that made decent Belgian style beers. No, I am not talking about the fruity stuff. It is time to vote on New Glarus' beer schedule for next year.
from my understanding it said it was based on wRAA, which said it was a counting statistic not an average. Fangraphs WAR is based on wOBA. so does that mean that WAR is commonly increased if a player plays more? If the player is a positive hitter it increases. For players like Kotsay, Counsell and Betancourt it goes further into the negatives the more they play. if so, how could it be computed differently for players with not many plate appearances? Just use wOBA.
I was just making a comment about defensive metrics. Not really meant specifically toward you but some people on here. In my opinion the defensive metrics available for free are not as reliable and accurate as some people like to use them as. The fact that the correlation of the defensive metrics is about half of OPS is all I need to know to see they are far from perfect. Everyone knows how much can OPS fluctutes from year to year..and defense should be more consistent from year to year. But yet the correlation from year to year is a fair amount worse. Betancourt's UZR/150 doesn't fluctuate much year to year. He is pretty consistently bad. Also as Russ pointed out, it isn't just the metrics that don't like Betancourt on defense. The metrics, scouts and fans all agree he is not a good defender. The evidence is pretty overwhelming that he is a bad defender.
