  1. They shed a lot of salary too. They lost Washburn, Beltre, Batista, Johjima. Just those 4 guys accounted for over $40 million dollars last season. Jeez, Bavasi was terrible. You're right. I wasn't thinking of the players who were gone. I think Jack Z is going to be a fine GM. Most likely he will always have more resources in Seattle than does Milwaukee. As I recall the Mariners were the second most profitable team in MLB before Bavasi ran them into the ground and attendance slipped. Jack appears to have righted the ship, so expect the fans to come back and the money to flow back in.
  2. The Mariners' payroll in 2009 was $98 million, nearly $20 million more than the Brewers'. To that they have added at least another $16 million by acquiring Figgins and Lee. Their payroll in 2010 may be 50% higher than the Brewers'.
  3. I don't think he's a huge injury risk. He's pitched well the last couple years with no injury problems. He had TJ surgery in 2005. Can't remember the source but as I recall most TJ surgery pitchers that fully recover are less of an injury risk after the surgery than before. In 2007 he had shoulder surgery. Since then he's thrown 400+ innings. I'd say the shoulder's fine. Since he's had surgeries to repair the two major injury areas for a pitcher and come back strong for two seasons, I'd say he is less of an injury risk than the typical major league starter who's never had TJ or shoulder surgery.
  4. That happened in 2007/08 when the Brewers paid him $6 million.
  5. The best move the Brewers could make to improve the rotation. Hopefully they are able to trade for a young talented starter as well.
  6. Giving up a reliever who's still not fully recovered from TJ surgery for a journeyman starter is a pretty good move for the Orioles.
  7. I bet we'll see him popping up on MLB Network as a "senior analyst" in the studio or some such thing. Probably less travel involved.
  8. Why do the Yankees always get to rip off other teams? Was Kennedy injured in 2009?
  9. You're right. Matthews has been horrible with the Angels.
  10. At least Zito, Gary Matthews, and Vernon Wells have been useful, if overpaid, players.
  11. Some bottom feeding team will sign Looper in the $4-5 million range and hope he pitches a little better than he did with the Brewers. The Orioles have a lot of young arms; I could them making an offer just to be a warm body so they don't pitch the kids' arms off.
  12. Chad Moeller made $800K with the Orioles last year.
  13. Well this is why the Orioles signed him last year; to mentor Matt Wieters. Zaun was the starting catcher until Wieters was brought up in late May. Zaun was gone the first week of August. I guess the justification is if Kottaras is terrible, Lucroy and Salome aren't ready, then you're in a pickle. So you go into Spring with the veteran as the "starting" catcher and you see if any of the youngsters can step up. Rivera is arby eligible and could get $1 million through that process. So cutting him in effect lowers Zaun's contract by several hundred thousands.
  14. I like Zaun fine, but this is an unecessary signing.
  15. I'd like to see Irribarren get the chance but he really hurts himself when he doesn't play ss.
  16. Last 2 year composite OPS/Career OPS Polanco: .747/.761 ABeltre: .739/.779 Figgins: .745/.751 Derosa: .805/.767-But remember, 2008 was a career year. He's never really approach that .857 OPS in any other season. Polanco may be declining, but he's still a nice player. They might be losing a little offense with him at 3rd, but when your 2B already hits like a HOF 3rd bagger, it shouldn't be an issue. Even so, he's sizable upgrade offensively over Feliz. He may not earn his $6 million in his 3rd year, but the Phillies might have another Championship between now and then, so who cares? Not an earth shattering move, but a nice one that quickly plugs a hole for the best team in the league.
  17. The GMs just flooded the market with free agents. This should drive the market down for all but the handful of elite players. I like your line of thinking Russ, but I don't think the New Market is going to pay $9 million for a 30 year old average-ish 2B. Arbitration however, will look at comparable players many of whom have salaries dating pre-New Market. So, I think his value will be inflated through arbitration, as it almost always is. He could argue he had a comparable year to Brian Roberts, who is making $10 million per season over the next 4 years.
  18. They don't need Lopez. McGehee, Iribarren, and maybe Counsell provide backup for Weeks. Lopez' batting avg and obp were almost 60 points higher than his career numbers. No way he sustains that going forward. He would almost certainly make more in arbitration than he will make on the open market. Same with Cameron. I doubt anyone offers Cameron $12 million for next year, but through arbitration, which doesn't really consider a player's age, he would make that. I don't have a problem with declining arbitration on any of these players.
  19. He looks like a good fit for Atlanta.
  20. Where did John MacDonald sign? He's a great ss.
  21. Don't you think Josh Butler will be at AAA in 2010?
  22. I think even casual fans would understand this "go for it" strategy if they actually won the division or made through a round or two of the playoffs at least once in the next two years. Most people realize it's unlikely Prince will be a Brewer in 2012. It makes sense to maximize the opportunity presented by such a special hitter.
  23. If Prince isn't going to sign then they should push that $100 million payroll for the next two years, then gut the team after 2011. 2012 team is built around Gallardo and Braun and the next wave of kids.
  24. I don't think a market like the Brewers can afford to spend the money it will take to sign Pudge. Even if it's Kendall type money, that's too much in my opinion. He hasn't been a very good hitter for 2 or 3 years, and like Kendall is getting progressively worse. I can't see spending money on catchers. Unless of course you're a big market 95+ win team who only needs that last piece of the puzzle to guarantee the playoffs. Or if you have a young special player like Mauer.
