  1. I hate to admit it, but the Cubs have done a good job bringing in guys to be the closer while keeping their best reliever free. Absolutely, and I can't believe how long they've been able to pull this off. This is where bullpen payroll management gets completely screwed up. Marmol is the most valuable reliever they have, coming in to pitch the most valuable situations, yet he's probably losing millions of dollars by doing it because he won't have the "saves". For the most part, I don't really care for the designated "8th inning guys" or "closers". I always get a little upset in a close game when the closer is left in to pitch to 3 lefties in a row because "he's the closer!" Almost every game should be different, as every game and every team gives a different situation. Sometimes a LOOGY should get the save.
  2. Daron Sutton is the reason Juan Pierre gets made fun of so much around here. Well, that, and he sucks. Not nearly enough gritty battlerness.
  3. I would rather have Gerut available to play all three OF positions than to stick him in a platoon with Hart. He gives us the chance give those guys a breather from time to time without a significant loss in production.
  4. Scott Hairston just drove him in for the win. Nice way for TGJ to start his San Diego career. Totally rigged.
  5. I absolutely love this deal. Gwynn gets a shot at the bigs, we don't have to give him that shot, and we somehow managed a pretty good OF out of it. Not to mention the (hopefully) end of the constant debate about how valuable Gwynn is. Congratulations Pads forums, you've just added another debate that no one will agree on.
  6. Guillen: I've never seen him pitch [in a major league game.] Wow Ozzie.
  7. This is the first year in the last 3 years that I'll be missing this series. Stupid wedding planning... Anyway, goodbye Metrodome. I won't really miss you.
  8. Isn't it amazing that since that article, ESPN has taken it a step further and added Steve Phillips to the team. While Phillips has his own head-scratchers from time to time, he's light years ahead of Morgan. I actually enjoy Phillips for the most part. He just needs to realize that when he says something stupid, saying it over and over again for the next 15 minutes doesn't make it true. That's when I change the channel and come back 1/2 hour later.
  9. "Wins and losses are how you measure pitchers. Batting averages and ERAs are personal stats." Brilliant.
  10. Yo has to be the top priority. it's much easier to find another slugging 1st baseman than an ace. Hardy could go either way, and he's making himself richer every day, but I think solidifying SS with a hitter and defender like Hardy is also more important than a slugging 1st baseman. I would agree that he's priority #2. I honestly think getting Cameron for another year or two is a higher priority than Fielder. The combination of being a poor defender and a Boras client does not bode well for the Brewers. EDIT: Since I basically just said some of the same stuff as logan, I'll add a bit more. If Gamel's defense at 3rd is as bad as it has been made out to be, I wouldn't be surprised to see him move to 1B if/when Prince leaves.
  11. I'm not really sure how this works, so is there a reason Weeks was put on the 15 day DL and not the 60 day?
  12. I don't think Gamel Toe is very complimentary, and I wouldn't even think about buying a shirt that said it. Anyway, I agree with Mat the Bat. It really does seem like the obvious choice.
  13. Yeah, there's no reason to bring Escobar up yet. He's struggling at the plate, and between Counsell, Hall and now Irabarren, there's plenty of infield depth. Like Invader said, this is fortunately a position with decent depth. Maybe Escobar can get a few September starts at 2B, but I would much rather they keep him at SS.
  14. i believe Braun has the much much much much much higher ceiling. If you're talking about defensively, then I get what you're saying...but if you're talking about pure athleticism, I think you may be forgetting just how good Soriano was. Soriano just seems to be very stubborn, both offensively and defensively. Besides insisting on being the leadoff hitter against all better baseball judgment, he still does the hop before he catches a fly ball, and there's no apparent reason for it. Talk about a fear of change.
  15. Can you explain that a little further end? I'm not really too well-versed in UZR. By pure speculation I would assume that range is much more important than arm, but that's just a guess.
  16. I agree, but like I said, you have to know what it will take to get Yo before you look to see what's left for Bush.
  17. And of course I just bought a Weeks jersey. Lame. The only silver lining I can think of is that at least we saw him putting it all together so we know that he can. If he had started this year slowly and then had this happen, he probably wouldn't get another chance.
  18. Yo is the one to lock up. Absolutely. And the reason I don't think Bush will get a long-term deal anytime soon is because Yo should be the first option. If you give that money to Bush now, it could limit what's left for Yo when negotiation time comes. If Yo could get a deal roughly similar to Braun's (but probably with more money), I would be a very happy Brewer fan.
  19. If he would base his lineup on position, maybe this wouldn't have happened... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. Also, one point to consider...not everyone likes confrontation. If some people show up to the game late and see you and your friends sitting in their tickets, they might just shrink off and sit in worse seats because they didn't want to bother with it. That's not really fair. Add on to this that you might be annoying people around you when you don't realize it, but they might just dislike confrontation. There are some very nice people in the world that would have a hard time saying something about it. I would rather just stay in my seat than take advantage of someone who is too nice to speak up.
  21. We didn't get Manny, Texiera, Burnett, or resign CC. Ha! Yeah, how dare he not shell out another $100+ million! He's just not committed. I think the only negative thing that I've ever heard about Attanasio is that Suppan was more his signing than it was Melvin's. If that's the only negative in the years that he's been here, I think he can feel confident that Brewer fans are happy with him.
  22. Since it's Hy's property, obtained in a legal manner, it is unfair for Coghlan to ask for it back. It was never Coghlan's property. It ceased to be major league baseball property once it hit the stands. I've seen this opinion thrown around a lot in this thread. I've also seen a lot of "it's the property of MLB". So unless someone has definitive proof of either side, I'm not sure how it can be used in any argument. The stands are still the property of the team, and before it's put into play, the ball is the property of the team/MLB. I don't quite understand how a home run/foul ball is some magical change of ownership when the fan is still on the property of the team. On the other hand, those that caught the milestone homers that we've seen in the past few years were getting a lot of money for them. Is it because they are the true owners or because MLB isn't concerned with getting into a trial about it and possibly alienating fans? Point is, using this argument takes the discussion nowhere since everyone seems to disagree about it.
  23. Yet CC doesn't seem to have suffered much effect from his workload late last season. Not yet, but another year or two of being pitched that way could have put him at a high risk, regardless of his age. I had no problem with that decision (over-pitching C.C.) because it was mostly understood that he was gone at the end of the year. The difference is that Kendell is old already, so over-working him could have effects on the season at hand. With C.C. it was more of a "down the road" thing. He understood his value to the team and was not going to short change the team or himself by trying to be he-man. Maybe this was just rumor, but I thought I heard that Yost was going to play him as much as possible so he could pick up and extra bonus for games started.
  24. Do you have any idea how much crap Coghlan probably got from Ramirez if he asked him? I'm sure Happy Youngster will be along shortly to give his version of the story.
  25. I don't think he really needs to be in the spotlight anymore. Those first few years were critical because he had to prove to the fans that there was a new regime and we were going to be competitive. At this point, though, I don't think there is a Brewer fan out there with a bad thing to say about him, so he can just lay low.
