  1. Thanks! What about his breaking stuff? Does he tend to miss with his breaking stuff (like the bad Axford), his fastball (like the bad Peralta), or does he have control issues with everything? With that strikeout rate, working mid-90's, and being 6'5", 225, I hope he will be given every chance to succeed. Could be quite the nugget for a 26th round pick.
  2. Well, Narveson was taken off of the 40-man for a reason, and it's not because anyone on the 60-day DL is coming back presently. They need to make room for someone, either to promote who is not on the 40-man (Halton) or for prospects coming back in a trade (Valverde DFA'd by the Tigers today). They could be waiting to see what shape their bullpen is in after Saturday's game. If they can get a good outing from Hand with minimal strain on the bullpen it may open a door for Halton, but if the bullpen is stressed they may need to call up a 13th pitcher.
  3. Maybe TheCrew can give us a first-hand scouting report on Martin Viramontes. I'm tempted to sneak him in at #25 of my Power 25. In his last four appearances covering 11 innings he has given up 7 hits, walked four, and struck out 19. For the year he has 34 Ks in 22.2 IP (with 19 BB, 6 of them coming in one outing on 4/22) and last year struck out 53 in 37 IP in Helena.
  4. Just a coincidence that Valverde was DFA'd the same day that Narveson was DFA'd? Brewers clearing a roster spot for a trade? Neither Hart nor anyone else on the 60-day DL is close to returning. Jake Thompson is now eligible to be traded since it has been over a year since he was drafted (wouldn't have to put him on the 40-man though). Crosby plus Paulino for K-Rod?
  5. Tigers DFA Valverde... could the Brewers be clearing a roster spot for a trade?
  6. Keep in mind that Melvin has nothing to do with the draft other than be consulted if a potential draft pick demands well above slot value. The actual choosing of talent is done by the amateur scouting department (Seid et. al.)
  7. Wha...?? For a guy who can only play LF or 1B, has only a 1.8 WAR this year, and never dominated in the minors (considering he played in the Cal/Texas/PCL leagues, notorious hitters paradises)?
  8. To answer the original question, yes. I'll bet that Axford won't get a raise because they can't use closers as a comp because he is no longer a closer, and he had a bad 2011. Not sure why people would want Porcello. He is young, but like others said 1) he doen't miss many bats, and b) he is eligible for arbitration next year and a free agent in 2016. Don't really want to pay $8M/year for a young Jeff Suppan for two years and then watch him walk.
  9. Literally within five minutes of typing this Fiers gave up a grand slam and Meadows, relieving Jungmann, gave up a grand slam with three of the runners attributed to Jungmann. I'm done.
  10. With three rounds complete, Stricker is only one shot off the lead of The U.S. Open. This is the closest he has ever been to a major, and may be the best chance he ever gets.
  11. This is what TheCrew missed from my post. My second point was that Morris is not going to get the PAs once Hart comes back, so he will either rot on the bench (hurt his development) or be sent down and burn an option year unnecessarily.
  12. A raddler is best with a simple lager beer (a weiss might work) with orange soda. Do NOT use orange juice - does not work. About 75% beer, 25% soda. You could also use a lemon-lime soda, which is more like a shandy. My favorite summer drink is a limeade shandy. Take any run-of-the-mill light beer, mix about 2/3rds beer and 1/3rd limeade (my favorite is Simply Limeade). Top off with a handful of ice cubes. As a friend of mine said last 4th of July, "that is ridiculously refreshing".
  13. Hoping that Fiers can at least find a happy medium between his AAA and major league numbers. Jungmann... cruising. The three HRs he's given up in his last five outings are a bit concerning, but as I type this in his 50 innings since coming off the DL he has given up 30 hits.
  14. I'm surprised Burgos isn't on more lists - he hasn't reached the 50 IP limit. 1. Nelson 2. Hellweg 3. Jungmann 4. A. Pena 5. T. Taylor 6. Haniger 7. Arcia 8. Thornburg 9. Morris 10. Kh. Davis 11. Gennett 12. Coulter 13. D. Williams 14. Roache 15. Lopez 16. Bradley 17. Burgos 18. Neuhaus 19. Wagner 20. Magnifico 21. Gindl 22. Ke. Davis 23. Gagnon 24. Garfield 25. Reed Next five out - J. Pena, Goforth, A. Williams, Viramontes, Uhen I think people undervalue Ariel Pena. Excluding (IIRC a rain delay) 5/3, 10 of his last 11 starts have been quality starts and has given up only 50 hits in 72 IP with 70 K. Just a little better control and he could be special. This list was deeper than I thought; lacking potential All-Stars after Nelson/Hellweg, but hopefully Haniger/Arcia/Taylor can continue to develop and change that. Edit: I also think people, myself included, undervalue Khris Davis. While he has gotten off to a slow start, his OBP is still >.100 higher than his BA and historically has had a surprisingly good BB:K ratio. He had a .451 OBP in 2012 and has a career .393 OBP in the minors.
  15. He is only three years removed from being drafted. His first major league game was two days less than three years ago exactly (6/17/10). He made AAA in less than three years. The power is there... by your reasoning of six years, doesn't he deserve three more years to develop his OBP skills?
  16. With all of the top picks signed and in the fold, is it time to revive the Power 50? Rams does a great job with his analysis, however I would be interested in getting more of a consensus from the group. I'll be willing to do the compiling of the results. I don't know if I can handle 50, so let's start with 25 and see how it goes for now. Rank your top 25 prospects and either post them here or PM them to me. No need to go into explanation, just a rank. What were the general Power 50 rules - maximum age of 26, no more than 100 AB's or 50 IP? Let's set a submission deadline of June 25th, and aim for results by July 1st.
  17. If you can get "free" advice, it doesn't hurt. I just question how many attorneys are going to tell you to not file a lawsuit since filing lawsuits and taking legal action is how attorneys get paid. Maybe one of the attorneys on this board would be kind enough to chime in (perhaps change the title of the thread and add "legal advice needed" to encourage any attorneys to read it). The police will definitely give you free advice. Did this guy ever reply to any emails? I know you said he doesn't return them now, but any written documentation you have from him will strengthen your case.
  18. A lawsuit is going to cost you money. If the value of the item is less than $1000 you can file in small claims court and not have to pay an attorney. But the risk with a lawsuit of any type is that if he wins the suit (or you can't prove your case) then no only do you not get your item back but you also have to pay legal fees and court costs for both you and him, and that will be the end of it. I would recommend going to the police first. If nothing else, he will be forced to talk to the police - if he dodges the police it will make him look guilty and could get him arrested if he doesn't talk to them. Hopefully you still have a copy of the emails you sent him in your Sent folder; print them out (as far back as you can) and bring them with you when you talk to the police. That will make your case much stronger. You don't have to claim he sold it or did anything with it; you just have to claim that he didn't give it back. It's your property and if he won't give it back that's theft. If the police do nothing, then protest outside of the store. Bring the emails with you in case mall security gets called. That's another idea - if the store is in East Town Mall, go to mall management with copies of the emails. The owners of the mall don't want to lease to bad businesses, it's bad P.R. and will steer customers away from the mall so they will likely listen.
  19. I was just going to post that the reason the Brewers started Gorzelanny and had Thornburg come out of the bullpen was likely to put less pressure on him, put him in a better position to succeed, and boost his confidence. Looks like that boost in confidence translated into his best start of the season, throwing only 89 pitches in 7 innings.
  20. The argument could be made that with such a poor season and with such poor starting pitching, why put a guy on the 40-man and burn service time when you don't have to? Gennett is different in that he was already on the 40-man and had already burned an option year when he didn't make the club out of spring training; they weren't losing anything by calling him up. Morris doesn't have to be put on the 40-man until after the season is over, and he has things to work on (only one season with an OBP >.330). If Hart was going to be out all season then it might make sense, but when Hart comes back you have a situation where you have to sit one or the other and you either lose any trade value for Hart by sitting him, you let Morris rot on the bench, or you send Morris back down to AAA and burn a valuable option year. Edit: maybe these posts should be moved to a Hart/Morris/1B thread instead of "General State of the Franchise"
  21. I would say first call the police. I could see the police asking you to prove that you gave it to them, and if you can't prove it, may decide they have better things to do. If that doesn't work, stand outside of the store front on public ground (sidewalk) holding up a sign that says, "(store owner's name or business name) won't return my signed canvas". Be careful what you put on the sign, make sure it's factual so that he can't sue you for something. Saw this once in CA - a couple standing on the sidewalk in front of a used car dealership on PCH holding up a sign that said "(business) sells lemons" and waving at busy rush hour traffic crawling by. They weren't there later that day. Business owners will quickly realize this can cost them a lot more than they stand to make on you and will work to resolve it very quickly. If you do something inside the store or on private ground, they can call the police on you.
  22. Adam Wilk was released by the Tigers in December and his contract sold to a team in Korea. Looking at his minor league numbers, this makes no sense. 25 years old, LHP, career WHIP of 1.020, almost equal OPS vs RH and LH batters... not a strikeout pitcher, but only 73 BB in 493 career innings. There has to be more here - anyone know what/why?
  23. Right now Carlos Gomez is #1 in all of MLB in WAR, regardless of position, pitchers or position players.
  24. My turn - former Brewers prospect (hint - drafted in first 3 rounds): Age Level BA OBP SLG OPS 20 Rk .307 .408 .451 .859 21 A+/A .257 .301 .343 .691 22 A+ .314 .375 .406 .781 23 AA .322 .393 .483 .877 24 AA .395 .467 .627 1.094 25 AAA .318 .385 .461 .846
  25. The interesting part about Hamilton is that for his major league career he had exactly one more strikeout than walk (493 vs 494). For his minor league career he had more walks than K's (excluding rehab stints, 199 to 158). I wonder what people would think of Hamilton now - high OBP but low SLG, especially for playing in Denver. Would people be really high on him based on his age 23 season in AAA (.404 OBP), or sour on him based on his age 24 season? Two >3.0 WAR seasons in CF, but other than that a very average player.
