  1. I don't know if I can work up the emotional nerve to check out the Atlanta feed for tonight's game. /tear/ Here's hoping the Brewers are less nostalgic about Jim Powell than I am. Keep turning up the heat!
  2. Almost all of my employees are college students. Most have worked before, but I still occasionally come across someone for whom the library job is their first non-volunteer employment experience. So I figure sometimes I'm educating younger students when I tell them that two-weeks-notice is the norm. Regarding the person I mentioned above, her statement that I didn't notify her in writing of the two weeks notice thing said to me that she thought about giving adequate notice, then decided she didn't have to. That's what really irked me, and while I would have good things to say about her in a job reference, I'd also be inclined to mention how it ended.
  3. Speaking as a librarian who hires people, I can tell you that for me, the more notice the better. If you were my employee, I'd appreciate as early a heads-up as possible, because it would give me a chance to plan for a new hire before the school year begins. I'd also want to hang onto a current employee as long as I could, rather than give a resigning person the boot immediately. In the current budget climate, I would be especially loath to give someone the boot immediately. I'd be very surprised if anyone in the UW-Madison libraries did that; but I don't know (and it's not really my business) whether you're on campus or not. In Madison there is always a lot of competition for library jobs, but when hiring is at a near-standstill for budget reasons, I'd question that an employer could replace you that readily. Even more important for me is kind of a corollary: the less notice you give, the worse you look. Every person I hire gets an orientation where (among many other things) they're told to give a minimum of two weeks' notice if they get another job. A grad student I employed this past academic year gave me 3 days' notice, stating that I hadn't notified her in writing of my two week preference. Needless to say, she did not leave a good impression upon departing. So definitely don't be that person.
  4. OK, well, I say it's time to flee Land Shark Stadium.
  5. Hmm, that was deflating. Not as much as the pitcher's home run, but still.
  6. Wow, Josh Johnson would look a lot tougher with a haircut. Come on, Brewers. I'd like to be able to post later tonight about Dave Bush's quality start.
  7. We dogpile because we love.
  8. What happened to the Uecker seats during the NLDS last fall? I'd guess they were sold like all other seats, not subject to the $1 deal.
  9. In fairness to Dennis Punzel and his employing "news source," Capital Newspapers (State Journal + Cap Times) either cut the hours of or laid off entirely each of the sportswriters who supplied Brewers coverage in 2008. Last season there were still locally written recaps of home games; this year it's all AP (home as well as road), with occasional features written by the remaining Cap Newspapers sportswriters. So the baseball-friendly writers don't get as much opportunity to contribute nowadays. I understand their choice to put Badger and prep sports first - it is Madison - but somehow I suspect they'll make a point to always send someone for Packers coverage. This is one reason I rely so heavily on Brewerfan to stay informed. Anyway, sorry to grumble; we appreciate your coverage whenever you can provide it, Dennis.
  10. There is nothing random, pointless or dumb about Russell Branyan.
  11. This is just what I was thinking. Bringing up Dillard for Julio would have messed up Tim's days off, but bringing him up for Parra wouldn't. I don't know if I can hope for two Brewer wishes granted in two days, but as much as I root for Manny, he needs some help.
  12. Should tonight be the night when Ryan calls out the team again? (I'm suddenly tempted to post that suggestion on Ryan's facebook page.)
  13. Looking too quickly at the tags 1992casey applied to this thread, I thought the second one said "bums" instead of "burns." http://www.kaboodle.com/hi/img/a/0/0/5/e/AAAACstJyMYAAAAAAAXmsQ.jpg Sorry, Jorge, but once hawing turns on you, it's hard for the Brewers not to follow suit. Ask Jose Capellan.
  14. OK, having read the JSOnline comments linked above, I accept Macha's explanation for 'having to trust' Julio. I even appreciate his all-but-admission that he doesn't trust Julio. Of course, he could have moved to a plan B sooner, and it was flat-out bizarre that the bullpen phone didn't seem to be working when it was needed. If this outing last night results in Jorge's removal from the roster, the ugly 6th inning will not have been in vain. I'm ready to move on, particularly from Julio but also from the game as a whole. Someone earlier in this thread commented that the 6th was the worst inning since Easter night. That's seven weeks and a day between really dreadful innings. I can think of times when they came much more often.
  15. I'd say yeah...only I've thought this after other Julio outings too.
  16. The part I italicized is almost verbatim what the S.O. said. With our DSL not working tonight, I had to battle through a dialup connection that is as slow as tonight's relief pitching is bad - in order to make this post: For all that is good and holy, do not let Jorge Julio pitch for Milwaukee. Ever. Again. I don't make these requests very often, so the Brewers really should heed me.
  17. The videoboard announcement includes the text number.
  18. Uecker further commenting on the "crowd": "they just showed the kiss cam and people had to move to other rows in order to find someone to kiss." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Seriously, can the attendance be in four-figures?
  19. My very first thought, upon seeing the announcement on the videoboard, was that fans might prank-text the Brewers to try to get their friends in trouble. But per the ESPN link, it doesn't sound like that's been too much of a problem.
  20. I just today realized that Friday will be JP's first call against the Brewers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  21. Ooh, if you're right again, that'll be something, all right...for more than just your predictive powers.
  22. Nor did he harp on where the Brewers' jersey shirttails go after a game ends.
