  1. Carolina pitching looking like a lot of baby seals from the Canadian arctic tonight...
  2. Stokes being an OBP machine is good news, and the power still seems to be there.
  3. How so? Everyone knew there could and would be injuries at times in the OF. I mean my money would have been on Braun or even Cain for the first DL stint but it's always a possibility for everyone of course. Because everyone would’ve put their money on Braun, Cain and even Santana to be DL guys, not Yelich who most wanted to see play 162 games this year. On top of that we have had discussion after discussion about our roster construction and how it doesn’t work. Some people will still toot that horn but it’s sure nice to have good players ready to go in case of injury. Obliques are dumb. Yelich averaged 145 games over the four full MLB seasons he played prior to 2018. So, he missed an average of 17 per season,
  4. RHP Taylor Williams is up. The good news: Extended ABs for Aguilar/Thames. Maybe one of them shows enough to get someone to say, "Let's make a deal."
  5. I'd be inclined to give Barnes the shot for it, or maybe Jennings.
  6. Furthermore, Suter's not been a full-time starter since 2014. In 2015-2017, he did a bullpen/rotation shuffle, and went from AA to the majors. He even shuttled back and forth in 2017. Ditto with Woodruff. Give him a half dozen or so starts.
  7. Honestly, I never got why they signed Chacin in the first place. Granted, 2017 was a great run, but for the rotation, this year really should have been a chance to see what the Crew had in Suter, Woodruff, and if Jungmann and Guerra had turned it around. Maybe even to give Bubba Derby and Angel Ventura shots if none of those four really worked out. EDIT: Also, we're still in small sample sizes here. I'm not gonna really panic for another couple of weeks.
  8. Could Hiura be the 1B of the future? Replace Braun after 2020?
  9. I had him and Demi Orimoloye in my top 10 at the end of 2015. Both left me feeling burned a little on just potential. Now, I look at the numbers.
  10. We really need Davies to get over these April/Miller Park issues. To the Cardinals? That's worse than losing to the Cubs!!!!
  11. Adding a few team leader predicitons: Batting average: Ryan Braun - .315 Home Runs: Travis Shaw - 35 RBI: Shaw - 110 SB: Villar - 45 OPS: - Braun - .915 Wins: Davies - 18 ERA: Anderson - 3.15 Saves: Knebel - 40 First call-up (hitter): Broxton First call-up (pitcher): Guerra First trade: Jesus Aguilar and Aaron Wilkerson to the Mariners for LHP James Pazos Deadline acquisition: Brewers get Archer, OF/1B Joe McCarthy, and IF Adames for Santana, Thames, Dubon, and Ortiz
  12. Thomas had very good OBP skills - really would have liked to see him get more of a chance.
  13. Good thing. We really need him to prove me wrong. Apparently, he's been working on a cutter, like Sharpie, and he has a very good pickoff move, like Capuano. I think that once he's stretched out, he will be a very pleasant surprise. At a bare minimum, it seems that he pitches his best against the good teams. Two of his best 2017 starts were against the Cubs, now this spring training start vs. the defending world champs...
  14. Maybe a swap is in the works... or maybe Yo's agreed to come back to Colorado Springs. If he pitched decently, I'd like to have him for depth.
  15. Win-Loss Record: 91-71 Playoffs: Yes Highest Playoff Level: World Series Champs All-Stars: Knebel, Davies, Yelich, Braun, Shaw Offensive Player(s) of the Year: Braun/Yelich/Shaw (tie) Pitcher of the Year: Davies Most Surprising Players: Suter, Villar, and Woodruff Most Disappointing Players: Thames (offense), Barnes (pitcher) Rookie of the Year: Woodruff Surprise for the 2018-2019 offseason: Brewers will be looking to trade Anderson and/or Chacin to make room for Burnes and Ortiz in the rotation.
  16. Nelson was an ace when he got hurt. He put it together after he had a bad stretch of three starts following two quality outings (starts 3-5, he got clubbed like a baby seal, but not as bad as he was on August 11 by the Reds). Looking over the game logs, I do not dispute that. That said, I think we should not assume that Nelson can jump right in and be that "horse" he was after those first five starts. He's coming off an injury, and I expect that the first month or so back, he probably will not be the 3.10 ERA guy, he'll be closer to the "starts 3-5 in 2017" guy as he gets back in the groove against hitters in mid-season form. If all goes well, if he has no setbacks, if he locks down his control as he did in 2017, and if the Brewers get luck they haven't always had, we may get the "ace" Nelson around August - making him kind of a deadline acquisition. But that is only if there aren't setbacks. My guess is that he will not truly be "ace" Nelson until 2019, what we will see is more 2015 Nelson (the guy who was 11-13 with a 4.11 ERA) in 2018. Worst case might see him revert to the 2016 Nelson who led the league in walks, HBP, and losses in 2018, be the 2015 Nelson in 2019, and never regain the ace form he had for 25 of his 29 starts in 2017.
  17. 2019? May well see that at the end of 2018. I think the point of the "glad we didn't sign Cobb/etc." crowd is that they didn't want the Brewers to be hamstrung by a long-ish contract when they have so much depth in the upper parts of the minors now. Nelson's injury seems like it isn't as serious as initially speculated, then you have Anderson (who has pitched great the last 1.5 years), Davies (who is only 25), and Chacin as your top four. Then you have Woodruff (top 100 prospect), Burnes (top 50 prospect), Ortiz (borderline top 100 prospect), and Peralta (potential to be top 100) knocking on the door, plus other potential starters (Wilkerson, Perrin, Derby) who are all likely to be in AAA this year, plus the pitchers moving up from A+ to AA (Ponce). Why invest in a multi-year deal when those guys are knocking on the door and can spend the money elsewhere? Don't forget Brent Suter, who's shown flashes in 2017 as a starter; Angel Ventura, who's only 24 and did pretty well at AAA as a starter; and Junior Guerra, who is likely to bounce back somewhat from 2017 - maybe not 2016 level, but a 4.00-ish ERA at league minimum is quite a bargain. Darvish was really the only pitcher I wanted as a free agent, and I would have made some kind of deal for a Greinke-type pitcher as well. But really, I felt that with the depth, the Crew didn't even need to sign Chacin.
  18. I kinda wish they could have worked out a way to bring Greinke back to Milwaukee. A Greinke-Anderson-Davies-Chacin-Suter rotation to start, with Jimmy Nelson on the way back... I even suggested a three-team trade to do it, too.
  19. But if he is constantly jumping between the bullpen and the rotation, how is he supposed to go from 1-3 IP every other day to going 7 innings, and tossing 100+ pitches? Sounds like the answer to, "Blowing out a pitcher's arm for $1,000, Alex."
  20. Maybe, but he did get hurt pitching for the Crew. This wasn't him being stupid on a dirt bike. It's the sort of gesture that might tip the balance for the next guy we want to bring in for a NRI.
  21. That was my big problem with the offseason. Get Yelich or Cain, not both. I think Suter's performed every level he's been at. I think he'll be a 3/4 starter - much of it is the bullpen/rotation shuffle he has done from 2015-2017. The last two full seasons as a starter in pro ball, he averaged 5.58 a start in 2014 (he had one relief outing of 1.2 IP for Huntsville) and in 2013 he averaged 5.83 a start between Wisconsin and Brevard County. His one relief appearance that year was a five-inning appearance. So, I think he can get six innings, no problem. Just let him settle into a starter's routine, and I think he'll be solid.
