Since Weeks has already been making 7 figures, pretty quickly. If the Royals trade Greinke its going to be for more than one hole filler for a few seasons.
Is Bill really that dense that he doesn't understand that with men on 2nd and 3rd in the 5th with one out and down by 3 that giving yourself a 20% greater chance to score is very much worth it?
Why would KC want Weeks if they are giving up Grienke? Trading Grienke means they don't seem themselves as legitimate for the next few year so why would they take on an oft injured 2B about to get really expensive?
It really seems much simpler than that. The variation of OBP across teams is less than the variation of runs scored. So you can't get the necessary variation from OBP alone.
I could see MLB setting up a separate minor league system in Korea and Taiwan (maybe China), places where baseball is big but not on the level of moneymaking Japan is. No posting fees makes MLB very, very happy.
Why might he not wanted to sign a five year deal? Assuming it was actually 5 and not 3 or 4 with options tacked on, at the end of 5 he'll be 30 and unlikely to get a long term (8 year) deal. Now at 28 he can get an 8 to 10 year deal much easier.
Nope, Braun just isn't that disciplined of a hitter. Braun's OBP was higher in May because he hit .322 not due to him increasing his walks a great deal.
Derek Jeter is being paid $21m this year to hit .276/.333/.381 and play his bad defense. My main point is that this has been almost entirely swept aside. Jeter could easily regain his form. But if ARod hit this way for a single month we would be swamped with stories about how he just can't handle the pressure and isn't worth the money.
Quiz time: Which highly paid (big 8 figures) player whose value is tied entirely to his offense is having an abysmal season thus far? So bad that if it was any other player making his salary there would be huge articles about it everywhere? Hint: It's not Richie Sexson.
1) Fielder wouldn't be the face, Wright already has that job 2) Reyes is signed to a great contract (5.75m, 9m, 11m option) 3) They could just go out and sign Dunn and not have to give up anything but draft picks
